It has a very balanced daily programme of basic Samskrit, Vedic chanting, Vedanta study, Bhagavatam, Ramacharitmanas, Bhajans, meditation, sports and fitness exercises, team-building outings, games and drama, celebration of all Hindu festivals, weekly Gayatri Havan and Guru Paduka Pooja, and Karma Yoga activities. This series is an effort to promote the learning of Vedanta; it does not replace the Course, but hopes to inspire young people to spend two years of their life for an experience that is sure to make a far-reaching spiritual impact on their personal lives. Sandeepany is an all-round spiritual course that gives proper direction to the youth and to those approaching retirement. Hinduism is in dire need of a band of systematically trained teachers or Acharyas who can serve this Eternal Religion. – The Author, 21st March 2019, Chaitanya Mahaprabhu Jayanti Page 2 The Yoga of Action | Discourse 3 Om Namah Shivaaya! The goal of God-realisation is said to be attainable only by one who has quietened his mind and attained peace. The heights of Saankhya Yoga were being proclaimed by Sri Krishna. This seemed to be very attractive to Arjuna. His own bent of mind at that juncture was to turn away from the battlefield. He did not wish to engage in this bloody war with his Guru and elderly relatives. So it would suit him perfectly to follow the path of knowledge leading to peace of mind, stillness and realization of God. Arjuna seems to have developed a leaning towards the meditative life, no doubt only because it gives him an opportunity to avoid engaging himself in battle. However, in the course of Sri Krishna’s advice to him, He has also praised the path of action or Karma Yoga to the hilt. He has spoken eloquently of the path and exhorted Arjuna to “get up and fight”, meaning to do his duty as a warrior. This is what has caused some confusion in Arjuna. Sri Krishna seems to be praising both the paths equally. Yet He is asking Arjuna to follow only one of them – namely, Karma Yoga. And this involves Arjuna to take up his bow – which he is very reluctant to do. Discourse 3 thus begins an elaborate discussion on the value of Karma Yoga. It brings up the topic not only from a spiritual perspective, but even from the secular perspective. Lord Krishna shows the great benefit of action among the pursuits of man. He shows how man’s actions fit into the cosmic scheme of providing nourishment for the whole society. He also shows how this contribution of man can be done in such a way that it does not hamper his spiritual progress but can actually contribute towards it. There is no clash between the activities of man and his spiritual welfare. The two can go hand in hand. This is what the Yoga of Action teaches. ***** Discourse 3 | The Yoga of Action Page 1 BHAGAVAD GEETA – 3 “Karma Yoga – the Yoga of ACTION” CONTENTS: Introduction to Chapter 3 1 3.1 KARMA YOGA vs. SAANKHYA YOGA (Verses 1 – 3) 04 Verse 1: Arjuna’s Question: Which of the Two? 4 Verse 2: Krishna’s Perplexing Speech 5 Verse 3: The Lord Clarifies Himself 6 Chart: The Individual’s Progress in Sadhana 8 3.2 FROM THE MICROCOSMIC PERSPECTIVE (Verses 4 – 9) 09 Verse 4: Two Misconceptions Cleared 9 Verse 5: Physical Action is Unavoidable 10 Verse 6: The Danger of Premature Meditation 12 Verse 7: The Successful Aspirant’s Approach 12 Verse 8: “Perform Your Bounden Duty” 14 Verse 9: Actions That Do Not Bind 15 3.3 THE MACROCOSMIC PERSPECTIVE (Verses 10 – 13) 17 Verse 10: i) Purpose: The “Pump-Station” for Prosperity 17 Verse 11: ii) Covenant: A Commitment to God 19 Verse 12: iii) Material Welfare: “Thieving” Re-defined 20 Verse 13: iv) Spiritual Welfare: “Washing” Karmic Debts 22 3.4 THE COSMIC WHEEL (Verses 14 – 19) 23 Verse 14: “Cosmic Wheel” – Its Five Component Stages 23 Verse 15: “Cosmic Wheel” – Its Fountain-Source: Brahman 23 Verse 16: “Cosmic Wheel” – Its Fruit: Freedom from Bondage 24 THE COSMIC WHEEL OF ACTION (Flowchart) 25 Verse 17: The Sage – An Exception to the Rule 26 Verse 18: Why is the Sage Exempted? 28 Verse 19: The Conclusion: “Arjuna, You Must Fight!” 29 3.5 EXAMPLES SET BY GREAT MEN (Verses 20 – 25) 30 Verse 20: The Example of King Janaka 30 Verse 21: A Role Model for Society 31 Verse 22: “Look at Me, Arjuna!” 32 Page 2 The Yoga of Action | Discourse 3 Verse 23: Bringing the World to a Halt 33 Verse 24: The Scenario if Krishna Did Not Act 34 Verse 25: The Difference Between Common and Great 36 3.6 THE ART OF TEACHING (Verses 26 – 32) 36 Verse 26: The Art of Teaching By Example 37 Verse 27: How Doership Arises 38 Verse 28: The Gunas Alone Perform Actions 39 Verse 29: Teaching: Closing the Knowledge-Ignorance Rift 40 Verse 30: The Perfect Definition of Karma Yoga 42 Verse 31: Need For Reverence & Faith 43 Verse 32: Deluded Critics are Doomed 43 3.7 SELF-RESTRAINT IN PRACTICE (Verses 33 – 35) 45 Verse 33: “What Can Restraint Do?” 45 Verse 34: At Mental Level – “Avoid Likes and Dislikes” 46 Verse 35: At Physical Level – “Do Your Allotted Duty” 47 3.8 THE “SLAYING” OF DESIRE (Verses 36– 41) 49 Verse 36: “What Propels One to Sin?” 49 Verse 37: Desire & Anger 50 Verse 38: The Three Stages of Desire 51 Verse 39: The Application of the Similes 53 Verse 40: The Location of Desire 54 Verse 41: Slay Desire At Once! 55 3.9 BEYOND DESIRE (Verses 42– 43) 58 Verse 42: Hierarchy of Desire’s Abodes 58 Verse 43: The Self – Where Desire Cannot Reach 59 ***** Discourse 3 | The Yoga of Action Page 3 3.1 KARMA YOGA vs. SAANKHYA YOGA (Verses 1-3, 3 No.) ARJUNA, THE STUDENT, is making bold to question his Master, Sri Krishna, about a confusion that has arisen in his mind.

THE UNIVERSITY OF CENTRAL OKLAHOMA Edmond, Oklahoma Jackson College of Graduate Studies The Effects of Samatva Yoga on Perceived Stress among University Students in the Midwest A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE GRADUATE FACULTY in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTERS OF SCIENCE By Avy M. Doran Edmond, Oklahoma 2011 COPYRIGHT By Avy M. Doran December 2011 ii Acknowledgements I want to thank Dr. C. Diane Rudebock, Dr. Melissa Powers, and Dr. Jill Devenport for all their guidance, insightfulness, and time. Having the help of a knowledgeable and forthright thesis committee made the thesis process run smoothly. I also want to thank the Department of Kinesiology and Health Studies at the University of Central Oklahoma. Without the assistance of several department faculty and staff, it would have been more difficult to accomplish my goals in such a short time. Your efforts are truly appreciated! iv Abstract The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of Samatva yoga on perceived stress among university students in the Midwest. Criteria for participants included that participants were students at a University located in a metropolitan area and enrolled in two sections of the 2011 fall yoga courses. The comparison group included participants from the two different universities enrolled in a fall 2011 weight training courses. Weight training was chosen as the comparison group because it was the most closely related form of exercise to yoga. Demographic data were collected on participants before the questionnaires were administered. The questionnaires, Perceived Stress Scales (PSS) and Revised Life Orientation Test (LOT-R) instruments which measure stress and optimism were administered as a pre-test to university students enrolled in yoga and weight training for the fall 2011 semester.

  • Sri Vishnu Sahasra Naama Homam Laghu Paddhati (Short Procedure)
Om Sri MahaaGanapathaye Namah Om Sri Gurubhyo Namah Om Rishibhyo Namah Sri Vishnu Sahasra Naama Homam Laghu Paddhati (Short Procedure) By P.V.R. Narasimha Rao (www.VedicAstrologer.org) Date of current version : 2009 June 11 A Word from the author My spiritual master Dr Manish Pandit hails from Pune, India and lives in Manchester, UK. The idea of spreading homam in the world was revealed to him in a dream a few years ago. He saw eight elevated beings in a dream. They transported him across blue skies to Chennai, India, where he was shown the big fire that was to be lighted in future. They told him to start the work. They assured him that homam as a spiritual sadhana was very appropriate in Kali yuga. As spiritually inclined people have fewer and fewer hours to spend on spiritual sadhana everyday with the progressing Kali yuga, sadhanas that work fast are more relevant. Homam works much faster than japam and other spiritual sadhanas. They told him that the practice of homam would transform into a movement that would reach across caste, class and race barriers. Later, when we were performing a Shata Chandi Homam in the first week of March 2006 at the Kalikambal temple in Chennai, he had a darshan of Divine Mother on a Friday and was reassured by Her about the right course of events regarding spreading homam. A Mahaganapathi homam manual was published later and several people are performing it daily or weekly or monthly. Our goal is to create a community of people who regularly perform a quick homam for the deity that they are attracted to.

His son, Shri Gopala Bhatta, was then able to serve the Lord to his heart's con- tent. Being pleased by his devotion, Shri Caitanya gave him initiation and ordered him to go to Vrin- davana after the disappearance of his parents. There he should remain with Rupa and Sanatana doing bhajana and writing books. - At the age of thirty, after the death of his parents, Gopala Bhatta, left for Vrindavana. When Lord Caitanya heard that Gopala Bhatta Goswami had arrived in Vrindavana and had met Shri Rupa and Sanatana Goswami, He was very pleased. At that time Mahaprabhu had already visited Vrindavana. Although Rupa and Sanatana had gone to visit him in Puri, Gopala Bhatta never received any invitation to go.
