Short Review: The “Austin Powers” films by Dr. John L. Flynn Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery (1997), New Line Cinema, color, 94 min. Director: Jay Roach. Writer: Mike Myers. Producers: Demi Moore, Mike Myers, etc. Cast: Mike Myers, Elizabeth Hurley, Michael York, and Mimi Rogers. Someone just had to do another spoof series of James Bond movies (the Flint series with James Coburn, the Matt Helm series with Dean Martin, notwithstanding), and Mike Myers also camped up the whole 60’s decade—London’s Carnaby Street fashions, psychedelic art. .Yeah, baby! With Mrs. Kensington (Rogers) in tow, much like The Avengers British TV series, espionage agent Powers (Myers) pursues the loathsome Dr. Evil (Powers too) through the 60’s. Both make the jump to the 1990’s (thanks to the convenience of cryonic sleep), and Dr. Evil sets out to dominate the world, while Powers has plans to shag his former partner’s daughter Vanessa Kensington (the sensuous Hurley). The comedy ranges from satire to bathroom humor, but the babes look great in their tight, leather outfits or short, short skirts and go-go-boots! Who cares if it doesn’t make much sense! Have fun. Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me (1999). (aka Austin Powers 2). New Line Cinema, Color, 95 min. Director: Jay Roach. Writers: Mike Myers and Michael McCullers. Producers: Demi Moore, Mike Myers, etc. Cast: Mike Myers, Heather Graham, Michael York, and Robert Wagner. Less spoofing and more bathroom humor in this Powers sequel! Dr. Evil (Myers) uses a “Time- Tunnel”- like time machine to travel back to the late 60’s, and steal Powers’ (Myers too) mojo, but sexy, go-go girl Felicity Shagwell (Graham) puts him at his ease with some tender-loving shagging of her own. -

Selling Out” Was the Worst Thing an Artist Could Do? If You Licensed Your Song to an Ad, You Were a Sellout
09.16 GQ 218 Dan Winters ® GQ’S Guide to BEING THE BEST BRAND YOU CAN BE Starring DANNY M¢BRIDE Remember when “selling out” was the worst thing an artist could do? If you licensed your song to an ad, you were a sellout. If you let them make your novel into a movie, you were a sellout. If you wanted to make a commercial, you had to do it in Korea so no one here would see it. But now? Everyone does it. Oscar winners. Knighted sirs. Even Bob Dylan. And no one cares! The big risk now isn’t selling out—it’s doing it wrong. GQ teamed up with DANNY MC BRIDE and his Vice Principals co-star WALTON GOGGINS to demonstrate how to sell out without selling your soul GQ’S Guide to BEING THE BEST BRAND YOU CAN BE rief History o A B f SELLING OUT THE BEATNIKS AT THE 1965 Newport Folk Festival should have known something was up when Bob Dylan walked onstage, trailing a suspicious cord behind him. He plugged in his Stratocaster and launched into “Maggie’s Farm,” but he may as well have been performing a Puccini aria, since he was barely audible over the boos. The charge: The harmonica-tootling folk king had Sold Out. But when We’re we look back through the Snapchat filter of 2016, it’s clear what he was really doing: expanding his brand. The Moral Technical Imaginaries of Internet Convergence in an American Television Network
Fish, A. (2015). The moral technical imaginaries of internet convergence in an American television network. In O. Fraysse, & M. O'Neil (Eds.), Digital labour and prosumer capitalism: the US matrix. London: Palgrave Macmillan. PREPUBLICATION DRAFT Abstract How emergent technologies are imagined, discussed, and implemented reveals social morality about how society, politics, and economics should be organized. For the television industry in the United States, for instance, the development of internet “convergence” provoked the rise of a new discourse about participatory democracy as well as the hopes for lucrative business opportunities. The simultaneity of technical, moral, and social ordering defines the “moral technical imaginary.” Populating this concept with ethnographic and historical detail, this article expands the theory of the moral technical imaginary with information from six years of participant observation, interviews, and employment with Current TV, an American-based television news network founded by Vice President Al Gore to democratize television production. This chapter explores the limits of political participation and morality when faced with neoliberal capitalism. Current Television and its Moral Technical Imaginaries Current is a for-profit television network founded in 2005 by Vice President Al Gore and Joel Hyatt to democratize television media production. It later became a progressive news network. Gore remains the chairman of the board, and Hyatt is the CEO. Current claims to be independently owned despite Comcast, the cable and internet service company, owning 10 1 percent of the network. From primary offices in San Francisco and Los Angeles, the network broadcasts potentially to 71 million homes, 60 million of which are in the United States, via distribution contracts with cable and satellite companies such as Comcast, Time Warner, DISH, AT&T U-Verse, and Verizon FiOS. -
“Building Television Programme Brands in the Digital Multi-Channel World – Perspectives of the Uk Television Professionals.”
abc “BUILDING TELEVISION PROGRAMME BRANDS IN THE DIGITAL MULTI-CHANNEL WORLD – PERSPECTIVES OF THE UK TELEVISION PROFESSIONALS.” SUKHPREET SINGH BOURNEMOUTH UNIVERSITY, UK Submitted for the award of MA BROADCAST AND FILM MANAGEMENT 2003-2004 Abstract This research seeks to be a pioneering study of television programmes from a brand management perspective by bringing together published literature in line with industry perspectives on programme and channel branding in the UK. The research traces the development of broadcast branding from its visual brand image era to today’s strategic brand thinking and management of individual programme brands by studying the role brand management plays in broadcasting today in the UK. The research indicates that broadcast brands are being compared more often to retail brands with the TV channel being a store and a programme being a product or line. It establishes the growing prominence of programme brands, the reasons for it and how it affects the resulting changes in relationship between the producers and broadcasters, besides shedding light on how programme brand extensions will develop in the future. At the same time, it says that the channel brands are poised to grow and consolidated in this highly fragmented multi-channel digital world driven by interactive, convergent and user-friendly technologies. Finally, it underlines the growth of non-broadcast commercial brands (in terms of advertiser funded content) which will play a major role in shaping how the programme and channel brands are built. Conducted in three months time as part of a Master’s degree submission, the research uses qualitative methodology and semi-structured interviews with purposively sampled industry professionals within an interpretive research philosophy. -
