183 Gloria Thomasos-Pollard Friday, January 14, 2000 HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES Friday, January 14, 2000 The House met at 1.30 p.m. PRAYERS [MR. SPEAKER in the Chair] GLORIA THOMASOS-POLLARD (DEATH OF) Mr. Speaker: Hon. Members, since the last sitting of this honourable House, it has come to my notice that a former Member of this House has died, and this person is Gloria Thomasos-Pollard. She had served in this House for a five-year period and her father had been the former longest serving Speaker in this Parliament. I thought that I should just bring this to the notice of hon. Members who may care to express condolences. The Minister of Housing and Settlements (Hon. John Humphrey): Mr. Speaker, anyone who has been in political life for as long as I have been would have known Arnold Thomasos when he was Speaker of this House. Those who, in fact, were in this House when he presided as Speaker would have known that he did not tolerate nonsense; he was a very strict Speaker. We could only judge that, as a parent, he would have been as strict and added to the strictness would have been the principle of love for his child. I had the advantage of knowing the late Gloria Thomasos-Pollard because I served for a while in the government in which she was involved. I must say that my knowledge of her late father and herself confirm, in fact, what I started saying that Gloria did manifest discipline, friendliness, and strictness, but she was a delightful person and all of us have fond memories of our association with her and also with her late father. -

C.W. Mills, The Sociological Imagination Introduction Why has British cultural studies had so little to say about the political activity of the adult black working class population in Britain? Why has social anthropology seen blacks in Britain as lacking the cohesive culture which is believed to underpin ethnicity? And, relatedly, why has sociology especially of 'race relations', conceptualised blacks in Britain primarily as a set of social problems?2 These are complex questions, which it is not my purpose to answer here, but I open with them because they delineate the terrain out of which comes this paper. -

About Eddy Grant
About Eddy Grant Eddy Grant stands among an elite group of artists as one who has not just merely moved successfully across the musical spectrum, but has actually been at the forefront of genres and even created one of his own. From pop star to reggae radical, musical entrepreneur to the inventor of ringbang, the artist has cut a swath through the world of music and made it his own. Born in Plaisance, Guyana, on March 5, 1948, the young Edmond Grant grew up on the sound of his homeland, tan singing, an Indo-Caribbean vocal style whose roots lay in South Asia and are the backbone of modern chutney. Then in 1960, the Grant family emigrated to England, taking up residence in the working-class Stoke Newington area of London. The young teen's musical horizons swiftly expanded, embracing the R&B, blues, and rock that percolated across his new island home. In 1965, Grant formed his first band, the Equals, and long before the days of 2-Tone, the group was unique in being the first of Britain's multi-racial bands to receive any recognition. The West Indian contingent comprised Jamaican-born singer Lincoln Gordon, with his twin brother Derv and Grant both on guitar, while the rhythm section of bassist Patrick Lloyd and drummer John Hall were native-born white Englishmen. Like most of the teenaged bands roaming the capital at the time, the Equals cut their teeth on the club and pub circuit and finally inked a label deal with President Records in early 1967. -

It was established in April 1963 with the following Mission: “To discover, generate, disseminate, and apply knowledge of the highest standard for the service Aims of The University of Guyana of the community, the nation, and of all mankind within an atmosphere of academic freedom that allows for free and The aims of the University are to provide a place of critical enquiry.” It began its operations in October of the education, learning and research of a standard required and same year at Queens College, the nation’s premier expected of a university of the highest standard, and to secondary school, before moving to the Turkeyen Campus secure the advancement of knowledge and the diffusion and in 1970. At first, programmes were confined to the Arts, extension of arts, sciences and learning throughout Guyana. Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences. Presentation by Josanne Leonard at the CRNM Workshop on ‘the Impact of Trade and Technology on the Creative Industries’ Oct 28-29, 2004 – Crowne Plaza Hotel, Trinidad Greetings all: This CRNM sponsored workshop is a good time to reflect on where we are and where we may be going in our creative industries. Already, a few of my friends and colleagues have expressed their views on industry trends and the state of policy and business in the Caribbean and their insights have been penetrating and refreshing. I look forward to the rest. Thank you Ramesh and the CRNM for seeing the value of assembling a forum of industry practitioners from creators to professionals to venture capitalists to begin these crucial discussions on culture and trade. An even bigger thank you to my sistren and brethren from around the region for agreeing to be a part of these deliberations. Your presence for the most part assures me that this won’t be just another talk shop. While I’ve been asked to focus on the audio-visual sector, it is important to underscore what in my view is THE most fundamental lynchpin that must at all times hold together our deliberations about the opportunities and threats in the WTO and other trade forums. We must nurture, respect and embrace our cultural wealth and begin to believe in ourselves and the things that we create as having real value. Without this belief in the creators and entrepreneurs of our intellectual property, we are fooling ourselves that our creative industries hold any real promise for wealth creation. -

Throughout this book, the term 2000s in the phrases “early 2000s,” “mid-2000s,” and “late 2000s” will refer to the first decade of the twenty- first century, analogous to “2010s” or “2020s,” not to “1900s.” While “mid-2000s” could reasonably refer to the years around 2050 and “late 2000s” to years after 2070, because this book is being published in 2007 and I refer to these time periods using past tense, the reader should not be confused.
