SPEAKER in the Chair] GLORIA THOMASOS-POLLARD (DEATH OF) Mr. Speaker: Hon. Members, since the last sitting of this honourable House, it has come to my notice that a former Member of this House has died, and this person is Gloria Thomasos-Pollard. She had served in this House for a five-year period and her father had been the former longest serving Speaker in this Parliament. I thought that I should just bring this to the notice of hon. Members who may care to express condolences. The Minister of Housing and Settlements (Hon. John Humphrey): Mr. Speaker, anyone who has been in political life for as long as I have been would have known Arnold Thomasos when he was Speaker of this House. Those who, in fact, were in this House when he presided as Speaker would have known that he did not tolerate nonsense; he was a very strict Speaker. We could only judge that, as a parent, he would have been as strict and added to the strictness would have been the principle of love for his child. I had the advantage of knowing the late Gloria Thomasos-Pollard because I served for a while in the government in which she was involved. I must say that my knowledge of her late father and herself confirm, in fact, what I started saying that Gloria did manifest discipline, friendliness, and strictness, but she was a delightful person and all of us have fond memories of our association with her and also with her late father. -

Raleigh was as beguiled by Guiana’s landscape (“I never saw a more beautiful country...”) as he was by the prospect of plunder (“every stone we stooped to take up promised either gold or silver by his complexion”). Raleigh’s contemporaries, too, were doubly inspired, writing, as Thoreau says, of Guiana’s “majestic forests”, but also of its earth, “resplendent with gold.” By the eighteenth century, when the trade in Africans was in full swing, writers cared less for Guiana’s beauty than for its mineral wealth. Sugar was the poet’s muse, hence the epic work by James Grainger The Sugar Cane (1764), a poem which deals with subjects such as how best to manure the sugar cane plant, the most effective diet for the African slaves, worming techniques, etc. -

Many of these programs are offered free of cost to members of the community in order to assist them in the development of skills such as computer training, small business by Postdlf development, arts and crafts, and some academic studies. The centers also facilitate seminars and other presentations by government departments and community-based groups. The Valley Resource Centre is located in St. George in a municipal complex which includes a police station, post office and library. -Marsilyn Browne +1 246 437 0621 The Glebe, St. George, Barbados Prince Cave Hall "And the Band Plays On" The Royal Barbados Police Force Band is one of the oldest police bands in the world, having been formed in 1889. It has a fantastic record of excellence in music and has performed throughout the world. The band has its headquarters at District A Police Station in St. Michael, which is where Prince Cave Hall is located. The hall is named for the former by Unhindered by Talent Director of Music of the Royal Barbados Police Force Band, Mr. Prince Cave. The band has a wide repertoire of music, from classical and jazz to dinner music and the latest in calypso and reggae tunes. Du cri fixe d’ici, déroule une parole aride, difficile. Accorde ta voix à la durée du monde. Sors de la peau de ton cri. Entre en peau du monde par tes pores. Soleil à vif. Nous entassons des salines où tant de mots miroitent. Nous tombons aux falaises par les clameurs de la mer. Parole non garante. Un peuple ne souffre pas la géhenne de son transbord tout simplement pour que ta voix s’accorde. Le souffle du monde de se résume pas à l’accent des poètes. Le sang et les os étouffés dans la terre ne crient pas par ta gorge. Parole menacée. Car nous sommes habitués au détour, où la chose dite se love. Nous effilons le sens comme le coutelas sur la roche volcanique. Nous l’étirons jusqu’à ce menu filet d’eau qui lace nos songes. Quand vous nous écoutez, vous croyez la mangouste qui sous les cannes cherche la traverse. Mais parole nécessaire. Raide et cassée. Sortie du gouffre, avec les os. Et qui se cherche dans tant de semblants où nous nous sommes complu. Et qui s’accorde malgré tout à cette énorme mélopée du monde. (Quitter le cri, forger la parole. Ce n’est pas renoncer à l’imaginaire ni aux puissances souterraines, c’est armer une durée nouvelle, ancrée aux émergences des peuples.) For further information contact the UOW Library: [email protected] A Note on Sam Selvon Abstract I can't remember when Sam started to contribute to Caribbean Voices, but it was just after the end of the War, when he was working on the Trinidad Guardian. I can just remember that it was a charming and unpretentious poem. 'Remember Harry's little car, And the vale with daisies.' Later it was about 'When the Yankees came to Trinidad, they had the girls all going mad.' He was one of the first estW Indian writers to make contact with the BBC, when he came to England with George Lamming in 1950. Long afterwards, he came down to see me in Bishops Stortford when he spoke about the literary renaissance in the Caribbean to a local literary society. His contributions were mainly in prose, clear and unpretentious and marked by great accuracy of expression; over the years, I can still remember the sketches he wrote in verse and prose, such as his vision of the shore in Barbados, with the sea making the sky 'tremendously large'. Then there was the birthday broadcast that he and George Lamming made to celebrate the birthday of Frank Collymore, the editor of Bim. -

Spring 2013 Dubbin’ the Literary Canon: Writin’ and Soundin’ A Transnational Caribbean Experience Warren Harding Candidate for Honors Africana Studies Africana Studies Honors Committee: Meredith Gadsby, Chair Gordon Gill Caroline Jackson Smith 2 ABSTRACT In the mid-1970s, a collective of Jamaican poets from Kingston to London began to use reggae as a foundational aesthetic to their poetry. Inspired by the rise of reggae music and the work of the Caribbean Artists Movement based London from 1966 to 1972, these artists took it upon themselves to continue the dialogue on Caribbean cultural production. This research will explore the ways in which dub poetry created an expressive space for Jamaican artists to complicate discussions of migration and colonialism in the transnational Caribbean experience. In order to do so, this research engages historical, ethnomusicological, and literary theories to develop a framework to analyze dub poetry. It will primarily pose the question, how did these dub poets expand the archives of Caribbean national production? This paper will suggest that by facilitating a dialogue among Jamaicans located between London and Kingston, dub poetry expanded the archives for Caribbean cultural production. -

Writing the Woman’s Voice: On the Verandah with Jean ‘Binta’ Breeze Jean ‘Binta’ Breeze was born in 1956 and brought up by her grandparents in rural Jamaica. She studied at the Jamaican school of drama and first visited London in 1985 to take part in the International Book Fair of Radical and Third World Books on the invitation of internationally renown dub poet Linton Kwesi Johnson.
