HOW DID WE GET HERE?: AN EXAMINATION OF THE COLLECTION OF CONTEMPORARY CARIBBEAN JUVENILE LITERATURE IN THE CHILDREN’S LIBRARY OF THE NATIONAL LIBRARY OF TRINIDAD & TOBAGO AND TRINIDADIAN CHILDREN’S RESPONSES TO SELECTED TITLES BY SUJIN HUGGINS DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Library and Information Science in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2012 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Associate Professor Christine Jenkins, Chair and Director of Research Professor Violet Harris Professor Linda Smith Assistant Lecturer Louis Regis, University of the West Indies, St. Augustine ABSTRACT This study investigates the West Indian Juvenile collection of Caribbean children's literature housed at the Port of Spain Children's Library of the National Library of Trinidad and Tobago to determine its characteristics and contents, and to elicit the responses of a group of children, aged 11 to 13, to selected works from the collection. A variety of qualitative data collection techniques were employed including document analysis, direct observation, interviews with staff, and focus group discussions with student participants. Through collection analysis, ethnographic content analysis and interview analysis, patterns in the literature and the responses received were extracted in an effort to construct and offer a 'holistic' view of the state of the literature and its influence, and suggest clear implications for its future development and use with children in and out of libraries throughout the region. ii For my grandmother Earline DuFour-Herbert (1917-2007), my eternal inspiration, and my daughter, Jasmine, my constant motivation. iii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS To adequately thank all of the wonderful people who have made the successful completion of this dissertation possible would require another dissertation-length document. -

Swimming Against the Tide: The Challenge of Legal Publishing in the English Speaking Caribbean IAN RANDLE∗ Historical Background Book Publishing in the English speaking Caribbean is a relatively recent phenomenon. Prior to the 1960s there were sporadic attempts by individuals and even large firms like the Gleaner Company’s Pioneer Press in Jamaica, but some semblance of sustained publishing activity did not come to the region until the post-independence period. In that first immediate post- independence period, the initiative to set up publishing operations came from British educational publishers who established either wholly-owned subsidiaries or went into partnerships with local business interests like the Collins/Sangster imprint in Jamaica. -

Le sang et les os étouffés dans la terre ne crient pas par ta gorge. Parole menacée. Car nous sommes habitués au détour, où la chose dite se love. Nous effilons le sens comme le coutelas sur la roche volcanique. Nous l’étirons jusqu’à ce menu filet d’eau qui lace nos songes. Quand vous nous écoutez, vous croyez la mangouste qui sous les cannes cherche la traverse. Mais parole nécessaire. Raide et cassée. Sortie du gouffre, avec les os. Et qui se cherche dans tant de semblants où nous nous sommes complu. Et qui s’accorde malgré tout à cette énorme mélopée du monde. (Quitter le cri, forger la parole. SHIFTING MULTICULTURAL CITIZENSHIP: Trinidad Orisha Opens the Road N. FADEKE CASTOR CTexas A&M UniversityA The procession of Orisha folks moved down the streets of Arouca to end at the African Ancestral Site. First were the praises to the ancestors, then the granting of awards and a brief Calypso interlude before the children lined up, performing their rehearsed dance as water libations were made to cool the earth (Onile). A person of importance, a holder of political power had arrived. Claps and the Trinidad Orisha call—a warble yell produced by beating the hand against the mouth—greeted the political leader of Trinidad, Prime Minister Basdeo Panday, as he stepped onto Orisha holy land, a welcome guest. On this day he would speak to the Orisha folks and promise the support of his party and the government. And later that year in Parliament his promises would materialize.1 As put by Pearl Eintou Springer,2 then member of the newly formed Council of Orisha Elders, “We want to say that it is the first time that a Prime Minister of this country has come to be part of Orisha people business” (Orisha Family Day 1999). Prime Minister Basdeo Panday’s photo at the festival would be on the front page of both national newspapers under headlines of “Shango Rising” and “PM promises more rights for Orishas” (Trinidad Express March 22, 1999; Henry 2003:129). Panday spoke as an invited guest at the Second Annual Orisha Family Day, March 21, 1999. In the 37 years since independence he was the first Indo- Trinidadian political leader. -

Spring 2013 Dubbin’ the Literary Canon: Writin’ and Soundin’ A Transnational Caribbean Experience Warren Harding Candidate for Honors Africana Studies Africana Studies Honors Committee: Meredith Gadsby, Chair Gordon Gill Caroline Jackson Smith 2 ABSTRACT In the mid-1970s, a collective of Jamaican poets from Kingston to London began to use reggae as a foundational aesthetic to their poetry. Inspired by the rise of reggae music and the work of the Caribbean Artists Movement based London from 1966 to 1972, these artists took it upon themselves to continue the dialogue on Caribbean cultural production. This research will explore the ways in which dub poetry created an expressive space for Jamaican artists to complicate discussions of migration and colonialism in the transnational Caribbean experience. In order to do so, this research engages historical, ethnomusicological, and literary theories to develop a framework to analyze dub poetry. It will primarily pose the question, how did these dub poets expand the archives of Caribbean national production? This paper will suggest that by facilitating a dialogue among Jamaicans located between London and Kingston, dub poetry expanded the archives for Caribbean cultural production. -
Victor Stafford Reid Was Born on May 1, 1913, in Kingston, Jamaica, to Alexander and Margaret Reid
Biography Victor Stafford Reid was born on May 1, 1913, in Kingston, Jamaica, to Alexander and Margaret Reid. Victor, his two brothers and one sister grew up in Kingston where they attended school. He was educated at Central Branch Primary and the Kingston Technical High School. During his early life, Reid was employed in various positions. He also traveled to several countries. He worked as a farm overseer, a news- paper reporter, advertising executive, and journalist and at different times edited the weekly newspaper Public Opinion and the news magazine Spotlight. In addition, he held several posts in the Jamaican Government. These included serving as Chair- man of the Jamaica National Trust Commission (1974- 1981) and a trustee of the Historic Foundation Research Centre (1980). In 1935, he married Victoria Monica Jacobs. The marriage produced four children, Shirley, Vic Jr., Sonia and Peter. His extensive travels helped to shape his passion of writing. One of his greatest influences was his exposure to Anancy stories and other folk tales of Jamaica which he heard from several story-tellers, but particularly from his mother. Most of his fiction is set in rural Jamaica with which Reid identified and to which he returned frequently, for reinvigora- tion and inspiration. He made Jamaica, its history and its peo- ple the focus of his works; several, of which have become standard text books for studies in Jamaica and the Caribbean. He died on August 25, 1987,at the age of 74. Who was Victor Stafford Reid Victor Stafford Reid (Vic Reid) was one of a handful of writers to emerge from the new literary and nationalist movement that seized Jamaican sentiment in the period of the late 1930s.
