J S Battye Library of West Australian History Private Archives – Collection Listing MN1993 Acc.5630A CULLEN, Neville de Barran Neville de Barran Cullen, born in Bunbury in 1908, was educated at Hale School and graduated in law (LlB) at UWA in 1929, admitted to Bar in Western Australia in 1930 and retired in 1970 as senior partner of Frank Unmack and Cullen. The principal purpose of his work in retirement was to bring to greater public notice the deceptions that he perceived to be behind the stated reasons for the initial American intervention in Vietnam, which was later supported by the Australian Liberal Government. To this end he made a detailed study of the Pentagon Papers (PP) and corresponded with numerous academics in the USA and Australia, Professor Noam Chomsky of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology being the most influential among them and the most regular overseas correspondent. The Papers include a 476 page unpublished manuscript based on his own research. He later turned his attention to human rights problems in other third world countries, economic problems in Australia at the time of high interest rates in the late 80’s and also took up the case of Father Brian Gore. His study entitled “America’s Vietnam Crimes” was published in ‘Journal of Contemporary Asia’. Canongate Press published his “Letter to Gorbachev” in their book “Dear Mr. Gorbachev” and an edited version of an interview with the ABC for the “Taken on Oath” series was to be published, subject to his approval of the editing. The Papers The records were donated by Rae & Peter Eastwood (Daughter & son-in law) c/o Hendry Rae & Court. Holdings = 0.96m Access The J S Battye Library provides access to original material.
