Having won Best for Itineraries in the Cruise Critic UK Editors’ Picks Awards for the last two years, I am confident that we continue to stand out from other cruise lines. Within the following pages you’ll find sailings taking full advantage of our smaller, friendlier fleet to present enriching and exhilarating experiences around the world. Unlike many cruise companies we remain family-run. To commemorate the 170th anniversary of Fredrik Christian Olsen’s first foray into shipping in 1848, the ‘Captains in Cádiz’ will see all four ships in the same port, on the same day – 10th September 2018. It’s a celebration that’s not to be missed. Balmoral’s unique two-month voyage to ‘California, Mexico & the Panama Canal’ is packed with special attractions and once-in-a-lifetime experiences, including the Golden Gate Bridge, Hollywood, Alcatraz, the USS Midway Museum, Baja California, Acapulco Bay and much more. There are many cruises timed to coincide with iconic worldwide events. Black Watch’s 107-night spectacular departing in November 2018 includes the unforgettable opportunity to toast the New Year in Sydney. Also in the programme are chances to be a part of the Monaco Grand Prix, the Cannes Film Festival, the Edinburgh Military Tattoo, the Seville Fair and the Tallinn Medieval Days Festival. Equally exciting is our new season of fly-cruises. From the exotic islands of the Indian Ocean, including the Seychelles, Mauritius and the Maldives, to intoxicating Latin America; from unforgettable Australia and New Zealand to the jewels of India, Arabia & the Emirates – we bring some of the world’s most beautiful locations closer. To whet the appetite you’ll find fly-cruise highlights within this brochure: to see the full collection, please order the Fred. Olsen Fly-Cruises Worldwide 2017-19 brochure. As important as your experience on shore is the time you spend on board with us of course. In November 2016, Black Watch was fully refurbished, with extensive improvement to ensure this classic ship delights and impresses guests for years to come. Where Black Watch led, Balmoral, Braemar and Boudicca follow: by spring 2018 all four ships will have been refreshed and enhanced. Rest assured, the fleet will retain the well-loved, friendly atmosphere that keeps guests returning year after year. I would like to sincerely thank all our existing guests for their ongoing support; to those who are yet to try us, a warm welcome to Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines. And to all of you, may I wish you the holiday of a lifetime. Fred. Olsen Jnr. Chairman View destination and ship videos at www.cruisewithfred.tv 3 Cruising with Fred. Olsen Bringing the world closer With five departure ports conveniently located across the UK and more than 200 ports of call to choose from, you can travel the whole world with Fred. Olsen, from the impossible beauty of the Norwegian Fjords to the inspirational monuments of South America – and almost everywhere in between. But the benefits don’t stop there. Taking full advantage of our smaller ships we can navigate rivers and waterways others can’t reach. We take you closer to enchanting cities, including Gothic Bremen, resplendent Bordeaux and seductive Seville, where you’ll glide along the Guadalquivir River right into the heart of the action. 4 Visit fredolsencruises.com, contact your travel agent or call 0800 0355 120 Cruising with Fred. Olsen Real ships We’re not interested in gimmicks like zip wires, climbing walls or robot bar tenders. We don’t have boastful megaships that carry many thousands. We take immense pride in our fleet of smaller-scaled vessels that retain the style, ambience and understated quality of a country house hotel. Whichever part of the world you wish to discover, you can do it whilst enjoying the ample space and comfort of your ‘home-from-home’ at sea. Smaller but spacious A smaller ship doesn’t mean less space; far from it. Each room is comfortably sized, with all the facilities you’ll need to enjoy your holiday. In fact, our rooms are comparable to those on some of the mammoth cruise ships. While our vessels are on a more accessible scale, you can have just as much private space. With fewer people on board it’s easy to find a quiet spot to relax in peace with a drink or a good book. There’s room to stretch out by the pool and you can get ashore more quickly too. And when you’re ashore, you’re seeing the best of each port of call with hundreds of others – not thousands – giving you a much more authentic experience. Service with a smile Each member of the Fred. Olsen team has been carefully selected for their warm and welcoming personalities. The quality of our people, supported by training and development ensures they will give you a great holiday: in guest feedback our staff are always the most highly-rated aspect of the whole experience. Step aboard and find out why year after year more than half our guests have travelled with Fred. Olsen before. View destination and ship videos at www.cruisewithfred.tv 5 Fred. Olsen’s Enjoyment Promise Fred. Olsen’s Enjoyment Promise Cruising with Fred. Olsen isn’t for everyone. We don’t like glitzy and flashy, loud and brash. If your preference is climbing walls, wave machines and TV celebrity chefs, we’re probably not for you. But if you favour a welcoming, home-from- home atmosphere, friendly, smiling staff and like-minded fellow guests with whom you can share a good story or two, you’ll likely find Fred. Olsen to your taste. You don’t have to take our word for it though: we’re so confident that you’ll like cruising with us that we offer our Enjoyment Promise as standard*. Simply book at least 12 weeks in advance on cruises of five nights or more and if you find that it’s not for you within a couple of days of sailing, just let us know and we promise to arrange and pay for your flight back to the UK from the next port and repay the cost of your cruise (you must read the full Terms and Conditions before booking). So your relaxation starts the moment you choose Fred. Olsen. Award-winning cruises We always aim to give you the holiday of a lifetime – but our guests and travel industry experts are the best judges of how U.K. we’re doing. That’s why it’s so pleasing that the dedication and hard work of our staff has been recognised in many awards in recent years. Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines Fred.Fred. Perhaps that’s why people who try us once so often choose to cruise with us again. There’s never been a better time to get on board with Fred. Olsen. *The Enjoyment Promise excludes Party Nights and cruises of 4 nights or less. The Promise only applies to bookings made for departures more than 12 weeks ahead. The Enjoyment Promise only applies to passengers who have contracted with Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines (“FOCL”) and excludes cruises on vessels operated by FOCL but booked through 3rd party operators. Should you wish to invoke the Enjoyment Promise, you will need to inform Guest Relations within 48 hours of sailing at the latest. • Zum Auftreten Der Kopfschildschnecke Haminoea Solitaria (SAY 1822) Im Bereich Der Deutschen Ostseeküste
1 Mitt. dtsch. malakozool. Ges. 99 1 – 20 Frankfurt a. M., Juni 2018 Zum Auftreten der Kopfschildschnecke Haminoea solitaria (SAY 1822) im Bereich der deutschen Ostseeküste WOLFGANG WRANIK & MANUEL ANTONIO E. MALAQUIAS Abstract: The presence of the Cephalaspidean gastropod Haminoea solitaria (SAY 1822) is reported for the first time on the Baltic coast of Germany. In August 2016 a larger number of specimens were recorded in a shallow area of the island of Poel (Wismar Bay, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Germany). Snails were found bur- rowing just under the surface of fine-grained sediments and reproducing by gelatinous egg balls anchored on the substrate. Records of smaller specimens of the snail in the Flensburg Firth and in the Kiel Bay in Octo- ber/November 2016 and spring 2017 from deeper areas (about 10 m), records in other shallow parts of the Wis- mar Bay, at Travemuende and at Neustadt/Holstein in 2017 and a possible record from Tjärnö, Sweden (North- ern Skagerrak), indicate, that the species is already well established in European waters and that its range is probably larger than currently known. It might be that it has remained undetected in other areas due to its bur- rowing lifestyle and difficulties in identification. H. solitaria, belonging to the family Haminoeidae, is native to the West Atlantic coast of North America where it occurs in shallow brackish and salt water from the Gulf of Saint Lawrence (Canada) to Florida (USA). European specimens were studied based on shells, live animals, external morphology and anatomy aided by scanning electron microscopy and molecular sequencing.

Austria Series 1 Elementary (K–6) TABLE OF C ONTENTS Why Study Cultures? . 2 Traditions Austrian Christmas Markets . 3 Folklore & Language St. Stephen’s Cathedral . 7 Food Kaiserschmarrn . 11 Cross-cultural Contributions Austria and Classical Music . 15 Reference Material Facts about Austria . 20 History and Holidays . 21 Additional Resources . 24 Visuals . 27 F OOD KAISERSCHMARRN Austria is well known for its delicious meals and foods: tortes, pastries, breads, and chocolates. For instance, Kaiserschmarrn [ki-ser-sh-mon] is a traditional Austrian food, usually a dessert, known to all Austrian chefs—from the family kitchen cook to the exquisite restaurant chef. The legend of the dish’s creation provides an understand- ing of traditional Austrian society and the lifestyle of the monarchs. Starting Points 1. Look at pictures of different treats from the United States and other countries (i.e., doughnuts, shortbread, cherry danish, milkshakes, candy bars, trifle, tarts, nougat, bonbons, truffles, etc.). Be sure to include an example of Kaiserschmarrn. Guess what country each sweet originated in. Kaiserschmarrn originated in Austria and is one of many Austrians’ favorite treats. 2. On an overhead projector, look at various pictures of American food, then pictures of traditional Austrian dishes, such as Schnitzel [shnit-zell], Goulasch [goo-lahsh], or Frankfurter Wurst [frank-furt-er vurst]. Then look at a picture of Kaiserschmarrn (see Food Visual 1). As you see each picture on the overhead projector, guess what it is. These foods are Austrian favorites—especially Kaiserschmarrn. Although they originated long ago, people still enjoy eating them. 3. Can you think of any legends that explain how recipes were invented or why we eat certain foods in the United States? Compile a list of ideas on the board.

PETER GUTHRIE, THE ARCHITECT AND OWNER OF DDG, EXPLAINS THE PROCESS. TH My design and development firm, DDG, discovered and ac- quired a site in the Upper East Side of Manhattan where we could build a tall building through the purchase of air rights 88and the creation of off-site affordable housing. We arrived at our design for this 524-foot-tall building, the tallest building north of the 70s, through our typical iterative and methodical design process. We studied the history of the site from the geologic prehistoric bedrock to the Beaux Arts apartment houses on Park Avenue of the 1800s and on to the golden age of skyscraper design of the 1930s. We would juxtapose the solidity of these apartment house typologies to the soaring aspirations of the New York skyscraper to find our design for a 21st century residential tower on base scheme for this project. We chose to investigate masonry and precast systems with traditional “punched” windows for the main façade to dovetail with our decision to use a poured-in-place con- crete superstructure. After careful and thorough analysis, we decided that brick was the right choice here for us. It actually turned out to be the most economical façade system for this project due to its complex location mid-block making large crane “picks” over neighbouring buildings costly and logisti- cally prohibitive for a precast system.

Make your own breadcrumbs by very lightly toast- ingslices of French bread and then processing them in a food processor. In the old days, they were wrapped in a kitchen towel and beaten into crumbs with a rolling pin. Do not make the crumbs too small. 1 cup butter 1/2 cup sugar Melt butter in a skillet, add breadcrumbs and roast them at medium heat until they are golden brown. Take off heat, add sugar. Mix well. In Czernowitz we did NOT add cinnamon, what a heresy! Procedure: Bring slightly salted water to the boil in a large pot. Cut ball of dough in half. On a floured board, roll out each half to a thickness of 1/2 cm.With a pastry brush, brush one sheet of dough with the egg white. Place plum halves, cut side down on the dough, spacing them about 7cm. or 2.5" apart. Cover with the other sheet of dough. Using a glass of the right size, holding it upside down, cut dumplings from the two sheets of dough, enclosing a half plum in each dumpling. To prevent the dough from sticking to the glass, dip the glass rim into a bowl of flour before (plum dumplings) each cut. VERY IMPORTANT: With your fingertips press the edges of the dough While generally considered an Austrian dish of Czech origin, my mother's together, all around each dumpling. Czernowitz Knoedel far surpassed those I ate in Prague.
