Online Appendix for Harald Hammarstr¨om& Mark Donohue (2014) Some Principles of the Use of Macro-Areas Language Dynamics & Change Harald Hammarstr¨om& Mark Donohue The following document lists the languages of the world and their as- signment to the macro-areas described in the main body of the paper as well as the WALS macro-area for languages featured in the WALS 2005 edi- tion. 7160 languages are included, which represent all languages for which we had coordinates available1. Every language is given with its ISO-639-3 code (if it has one) for proper identification. The mapping between WALS languages and ISO-codes was done by using the mapping downloadable from the 2011 online WALS edition2 (because a number of errors in the mapping were corrected for the 2011 edition). 38 WALS languages are not given an ISO-code in the 2011 mapping, 36 of these have been assigned their appropri- ate iso-code based on the sources the WALS lists for the respective language. This was not possible for Tasmanian (WALS-code: tsm) because the WALS mixes data from very different Tasmanian languages and for Kualan (WALS- code: kua) because no source is given. 17 WALS-languages were assigned ISO-codes which have subsequently been retired { these have been assigned their appropriate updated ISO-code. In many cases, a WALS-language is mapped to several ISO-codes. As this has no bearing for the assignment to macro-areas, multiple mappings have been retained. 1There are another couple of hundred languages which are attested but for which our database currently lacks coordinates. -

IPP264 Paraguay Community Development Project Indigenous Peoples Development Framework Introduction Public Disclosure Authorized 1. Indigenous Peoples (IP) in Paraguay represent only 1.7% of the total population (about 87,100) people, according to the most recent Indigenous Peoples Census (2002). Notwithstanding, IP, show a higher population growth rate (3.9%) than the average for the national population (2.7%). Therefore, it is possible to expect that the proportion of IP will continue to grow for some time, even though they will continue to be a small proportion of the total population. 2. There are 19 different ethnic groups1 belonging to five linguistic families2, being the most numerous those belonging to the Guarari linguistic family3 (46,000 or 53%), followed by the Maskoy linguistic family groups4 (21,000 or 24%). The four largest IP groups are the Ava-Guarani (13,400 or 15.5%), Mbyá (14,300 or 16.7%), Pâí Tavyterâ (13,100 or 15.2%), and the Nivacle (12,000 or 13.9%). Most indigenous peoples speak Public Disclosure Authorized their own language and have a limited command of Spanish. Harper1 Abstract Background: Acute respiratory infections (ARI) are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality globally, and are often linked to seasonal and/or meteorological conditions. Globally, Indigenous peoples may experience a different burden of ARI compared to non-Indigenous peoples. This protocol outlines our process for conducting a systematic review to investigate whether associations between ARI and seasonal or meteorological parameters differ between Indigenous and non-Indigenous groups residing in the same geographical region. Methodology: AsearchstringwillbeusedtosearchPubMed®, CAB Abstracts/CAB Direct©, and Science Citation Index® aggregator databases. Articles will be screened using inclusion/exclusion criteria applied first at the title and abstract level, and then at the full article level by two independent reviewers. Articles maintained after full article screening will undergo risk of bias assessment and data will be extracted. Heterogeneity tests, meta-analysis, and forest and funnel plots will be used to synthesize the results of eligible studies. Discussion and registration: This protocol paper describes our systematic review methods to identify and analyze relevant ARI, season, and meteorological literature with robust reporting. The results are intended to improve our understanding of potential associations between seasonal and meteorological parameters and ARI and, if identified, whether this association varies by place, population, or other characteristics. -

Luis Angelesand Aldo Elizaldey August 23, 2016 Abstract We study the effects of pre-colonial institutions on present-day so- cioeconomic outcomes for Latin America. Our thesis is that more advanced pre-colonial institutions relate to better socioeconomic out- comes today. We advance that pre-colonial institutions survived to our days thanks to the existence of largely self-governed Amerindian communities in rural Latin America. Amerindians groups with more advanced institutional capacity would have been able to organize and defend their interests in front of national governments; leading to bet- ter development outcomes for themselves and for the population at large. We test our thesis with a dataset of 324 sub-national admin- istrative units covering all mainland Latin American countries. Our extensive range of controls covers factors such as climate, location, natural resources, colonial activities and pre-colonial characteristics - plus country fixed effects. Exploring phonological areality in the circum-Andean region using a naive Bayes classifier Lev Michael, Will Chang, and Tammy Stark This paper describes the Core and Periphery technique, a quantitative method for exploring areality that uses a naive Bayes classifier, a statistical tool for inferring class membership based on training sets assembled from members of those classes. The Core and Periphery technique is applied to the exploration of phonological areality in the Andes and surrounding lowland regions, based on the South American Phonological Inventory Database (SAPhon 1.1.3; Michael et al., 2013). Evidence is found for a phonological area centering on the Andean highlands, and extending to parts of the northern and central Andean foothills regions, the Chaco, and Patagonia. Evidence is also found for Southern and North-Central phonological sub-areas within this larger phonological area. Introduction The goals of this paper are to describe the Core and Periphery technique, an intuitively appealing quantitative method for exploring large linguistic datasets for evidence of linguistic areality, and to illustrate the utility of this technique by applying it to a dataset of South American phonological inventories, focusing on the evidence of phonological areality in the Andes and surrounding lowland areas. Core and Periphery is a method that uses as a starting point linguists’ knowl- edge of the languages and history of a region to generate initial hypotheses regarding ‘cores’: sets of languages that constitute possible linguistic areas (Campbell et al., 1986; Thomason, 2000; Muysken, 2008), or parts of ones. -

Harper Dr. Ashlee Cunsolo Dr. Andria Bitton-Jones Transformational climate change across the Circumpolar North is disrupting Indigenous Peoples’ access to land, sea, and ice, leading to emotional distress, interpersonal stress, anxiety, depression, substance use, and increased use of mental health services. While there are strong theoretical understandings of the mechanisms that link climate and mental health, there is relatively little known about how the mental health of the most climate-sensitive populations is being impacted. Therefore, this research used a community-driven population health approach to examine how weather and seasonality impacts Inuit mental health in Nunatsiavut, Labrador, Canada in the context of climate change. First, a scoping review explored global Indigenous climate-mental health relationships. This review characterized the ways in which the emotional and psychological impacts of climate are connected to changing place attachment, disrupted cultural continuity, forced human mobility, and intangible loss and damages. Then, to characterize the lived experiences of climate impacts on Inuit mental health, in-depth interviews from across Nunatsiavut (n=116 interviews) were analysed. Results indicated that weather impacted mental wellness through: shaping daily lived experiences including connection to place; altering mood and emotion on a transient basis; and seasonally influencing individual and community wellbeing.
