As usual, they have put forward nominees to receive the annual awards presented at the UEFA Gala, held as a curtain-raiser to the new club competition season at the end of August to coincide with the draws for the opening stages of the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Cup. They have named six candidates for each of the awards presented to the Best Goalkeeper, Best Defender, Best Midfielder, Best Attacker, Most Valuable Player and Best Coach, based on their performances during the 2001/02 European campaign. This is not restricted to the UEFA Champions League – which explains the inclusion of Bert van Marwijk, head coach of the Feyenoord side which carried off the UEFA Cup and will be in Monaco to contest the UEFA Super Cup with Real Madrid CF.

  • 031129 156 UEFA Jubilee
Media Release Date: 29/11/2003 Communiqué aux médias No. 156 Medien-Mitteilung UEFA officially launches its Golden Jubilee Year European Football Union to celebrate its 50 year anniversary on 15 June 2004 UEFA today officially launched its Jubilee Year within the framework of the Final Draw for UEFA EURO 2004™. UEFA was founded at a meeting in Basle, Switzerland, on 15 June 1954, during the 1954 World Cup. Delegates representing 30 countries attended that meeting in the Hotel Euler. Shortly afterwards, Ebbe Schwartz of Denmark was named UEFA’s first president. Just one year later, the new UEFA fulfilled one of its most urgent priorities by introducing the European Champion Clubs’ Cup (the first five editions of which were won by Real Madrid), thanks largely to journalists from the L’Equipe newspaper. Another objective was met when the first edition of the European Championship was held in 1960. UEFA’s destiny in the decades since then has been largely mirrored by the evolution of these and other competitions. This story, through the subsequent presidencies of Gustav Wiederkehr (Switzerland), Artemio Franchi (Italy), Jacques Georges (France) and Lennart Johansson (Sweden), is traced in a new book to be published on the occasion of the Jubilee UEFA Congress in Cyprus in April 2004. The commemorative books are one of many special Jubilee activities planned during the year 2004. UEFA’s exact 50th birthday, on 15 June, will fall during UEFA EURO 2004TM in Portugal, and will be marked accordingly. To mark UEFA’s Golden Jubilee, each of the 52 member associations has been invited to nominate its most outstanding player of the past 50 years.

History History of the FC Barcelona History History History of the FC Barcelona Early years (1899-1908) The ad in Los DeportesOn 22 October 1899 Joan Gamper placed an advert in Los Deportes declaring his wish to form a football club. A positive response resulted in a meeting at the Gimnasio Sole on November 29. Eleven players attended: Gualteri Wild, Lluís d'Ossó, Bartomeu Terradas, Otto Kunzle, Otto Maier, Enric Ducal, Pere Cabot, Josep Llobet, John Parsons, and William Parsons. As a result Foot-Ball Club Barcelona was born. Several other Spanish football clubs, most notably Real Madrid and Athletic Bilbao, also had British founders, and as a result they initially adopted English-style names. Joan Gamper used his past to form the team. Prior to forming this club, he played for Swiss clubs like FC Basel and FC Zurich. Even with forming the colors and crest of FC Barcelona, he looked back on his past clubs. He took Basel's colors and parts for the crest to form his new club. FC Barcelona quickly emerged as one of the leading clubs of both Catalonia and Spain as they competed in both the Campionat de Catalunya and the Copa del Rey. In 1901 they won their first trophy when they won the Copa Macaya and in 1902 they also played in the first Copa del Rey final, losing 2-1 to Club Vizcaya. With Gamper's seal (1908-1923) In 1911 Joan Gamper became club president for the first time. Gamper took over the presidency as the club was on the verge of folding.

  • The Role of Football in Spain
THE PHENOMENON OF FÚTBOL IN SPAIN: A STUDY OF FÚTBOL IN SPANISH POLITICS, LITERATURE AND FILM Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Timothy Joseph Ashton, M.A. Graduate Program in Spanish & Portuguese The Ohio State University 2009 Dissertation Committee: Samuel Amell, Advisor Ignacio Corona Dionisio Viscarri Copyright by Timothy J. Ashton 2009 Abstract This investigation serves to demonstrate the multifaceted connection that the sport of fútbol has with certain aspects of Spanish society, namely, this cultural phenomenon’s long relationship with Spanish politics, literature and film. Since the formation of Spain’s very first club teams, the sport of fútbol has always demonstrated a strong connection with Spain’s historical socio-political disputes. These disputes have become essential elements in making up the very fabric of Spain and range from questions of nationhood, to questions of identity, culture, politics, ideologies and economy. Throughout this study, I address the dispute that has been taking place between the intellectual classes and the fútboling community and defend that although the relationship between intellectuals and fútbol has not been as public as fútbol’s relationship to politics, it has however existed throughout the entire history of the sport. Many intellectuals have deemed the sport of fútbol as an unsuitable topic for intellectual areas such as literature and artistic mediums like film. In this study, I uncover that some of Spain’s most highly praised literary figures had a passion for the sport which they alluded to, sometimes on numerous occasions, as central themes in their work.

Back in 1983 the reigning world champions had gone down 3-0 to Sweden as they failed to qualify for the 1984 UEFA European Championship; this time they have made it to Austria and Switzerland at least, but unless they respond in the right manner against Romania, they may not be around for long. • While Ruud van Nistelrooy, Wesley Sneijder and Giovanni van Bronckhorst were putting the Azzurri to the sword in Berne on Monday, Romania claimed a creditable point from their first fixture against France in Zurich, which finished in a 0-0 draw. • Romania will now look to build on that positive opening against the last team to better them on the élite European stage – Italy having prevailed 2-0 when these teams met at UEFA EURO 2000™. • Italy won that quarter-final between the teams 2-0 in Brussels, Francesco Totti and Filippo Inzaghi scoring against a Romania side who lost captain Gheorghe Hagi to a red card on his 125th and final appearance for his country.

Their 26 titles dating back to 1951, Steaua remain the INTRO record champions but the new force in the game, CFR Cluj, look increasingly difficult to shift. Forced to change their name to FCSB as more inconvenient truths emerged from the shady deals that wrested ownership from the Romanian Army, the European Cup winners of 1986, still known by all as Steaua, have finished runners-up every season since that 2015 win.
