The Significance of Eastern Martial Arts Disciplines in British Men's
This is an Author's Accepted Manuscript of an article published in ASIA PACIFIC JOURNAL OF SPORT AND SOCIAL SCIENCE, vol.1, nos.2-3, 2012, copyright Taylor & Francis, available online at: http://www.tandfonline.com/10.1080/21640599.2012.751170. Western men and Eastern arts: The significance of Eastern martial arts disciplines in British men’s narratives of masculinity Alex Channon Department of Secondary Education, University of Greenwich, London, UK Corresponding Author: Dr. Alex Channon, School of Education, University of Greenwich, Mansion Site, Bexley Road, London SE9 2PQ Tel: +44 (0)20 8331 8255 Email: [email protected] 1 Western men and Eastern arts: The significance of Eastern martial arts disciplines in British men’s narratives of masculinity Previous Western sociological research on Eastern martial arts has identified a tension between ‘traditional’ Eastern forms of practice and ‘modernised’ Western methods of training and competition. Particularly, the ‘sportisation’ of Eastern styles, where combat-centred arts based upon moral philosophies have transformed more or less into competitive activities following Western models of rationalised sport, has been an important theme. However, it is also suggested that Eastern martial arts hold special significance in the West for their seemingly esoteric nature. In this regard, such martial arts are considered significant because they are not ‘sports’, but rather disciplines with fairly different connotations for practitioners. Drawing on interview data, this paper explores how Western practitioners of Eastern martial arts articulate this difference, principally by examining the place of martial artistry in British men’s narratives of masculinity. Comparing themselves favourably to assumed, typical visions of Western sporting masculinity, such men draw upon the imagined uniqueness of their martial arts to construct a sense of moral superiority over other men. -

Zemanek, Jr. (USA) UFC pay-per-view buys and the value of the celebrity fighter Abstract In 2016, the Ultimate Fighting Championship was sold for a reported price of $4 billion, the highest price ever paid for a sports franchise. This was a remarkable turn-around for a promotion that 15 years earlier was saved from bankruptcy by a $2 million buyout. This turnaround was driven by the UFC’s ability to mainstream the promotion and the sport while establishing reliable revenue streams through television contracts and massive pay-per-view events. In this paper, the authors review the pay-per-view record of the UFC and analyze the extent to which it is driven by high profile celebrity fighters with broad crossover appeal. -

June 13, 2016 Muhammad Ali Expansion Act Long Overdue
June 13, 2016 Muhammad Ali Expansion Act Long Overdue Together, we are writing to express our unwavering support for passage of the Muhammad Ali Expansion Act, the proposed amendment to the Muhammad Ali Boxing Reform Act (Ali Act) to all combat sports including mixed martial arts (MMA). This amendment is desperately needed by combat sports athletes and to enable these sports to prosper and thrive. The lack of financial disclosures and coercive contractual practices that plagues MMA not only deprives each athlete of rights already offered to boxers, but also prevents investment in the sport and, as a result, stunts the sport’s natural growth. Fighters are hamstrung in their ability to negotiate fight purses as promotions, unlike in boxing, are not required to disclose to fighters the revenues earned from such bouts. Just recently boxer Chris Algieri invoked the Ali Act to obtain financial disclosures from his promoter to assist him in negotiating his purse. For no seemingly logical reason or good reason, fighters in other combat sports are not provided the same disclosures. Coercive contractual practices crippling the natural growth of MMA include, but are not limited to: (i) the use of exclusive and non-public contracts; (ii) the assignment of ancillary rights from the athlete to the promoter far beyond the term of the promotional agreement; (iii) champions clauses that prevent champions from ever becoming freely marketable; and (iv) secret discretionary payments that are utilized to keep the athletes subservient and silent. Athletes in MMA and other combat sports compete without benefit of independent, objective rankings criteria. -

Data-Driven Analysis of Winning Martial Arts Styles
Mixed Membership Martial Arts: Data-Driven Analysis of Winning Martial Arts Styles Other Sports Paper ID: 1575 Sean R. Hackett and John D. Storey Lewis-Sigler Institute for Integrative Genomics Princeton University, Princeton, NJ 08544, USA Abstract A major analytics challenge in Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is understanding the differences between fighters that are essential for both establishing matchups and facilitating fan understanding. Here, we model ~18,000 fighters as mixtures of 10 data-defined prototypical martial arts styles, each with characteristic ways of winning. By balancing fighter-level data with broader trends in MMA, fighter behavior can be predicted even for inexperienced fighters. Beyond providing an informative summary of a fighter's style, it is also the case that style is a major determinant of success in MMA. This is reflected by the fact that champions of the sport conform to a narrow subset of successful styles. 1. Introduction Early events in Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) were touted as a chance to determine which styles of pure martial arts were most effective for defeating an opponent [1, 2]. These events, epitomized by the mid-1990s events of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and Vale Tudo, featured matchups of stylistically diverse martial artists representing sports such as Boxing, Judo and Karate [1, 3]. As the sport of MMA has evolved, fighters have become increasingly well-rounded [1, 2]. Modern MMA fighters need to be effective strikers who dictate where the fight occurs, either by taking down their opponents or forcing them to fight standing. Each MMA fighter’s skills are drawn from a mix of multiple pure martial arts that define his/her personalized fighting style.
