Why everyone hates Big Tech, with The Verge's Nilay Patel - The Weeds - Air Date 7-19-19 NILAY PATEL: [00:00:34] I think one thing everyone will agree on, just universally, is that these companies are not necessarily well-run. And even if they were perfectly run, the nature of wriAng and enforcing speech regulaAon is such that you're sAll gonna do a bad job. The United States has been trying to develop a free speech policy in our courts for 220+ years and we're preVy bad at it, but four guys at Facebook aren't going to do a good job up in 20 years. So there's that problem, where does the line cross from being a preVy funny joke to being overtly bigoted? It really depends on context. We all understand this. So it absolutely depends on the context. It depends on who you think you are speaking to, whether it's a group of your friends or whether suddenly TwiVer's algorithm grabs you and amplifies you to millions of people.

Israeli Defense Minister to Develop 'Special Security Arrangement' with Gulf States - Report by Mary F. Israeli President Reuven Rivlin on Monday received the first-ever ambassador to Israel, Mohamed Mahmoud Al Khajah, from the UAE, following the agreement that the countries made last year to normalize relations. On Tuesday, Israel’s Defense Minister Benny Gantz, while on a visit to an Israel-Gaza border crossing, revealed that Israel plans to develop a “special security arrangement” with new Gulf Arab allies, Reuters reported. “I don’t think it’s going to be a defense pact but we are going to develop defense relations with every country that we have relations with,” Gantz told Reuters. “We have this process of setting up [a] special security arrangement, and within this arrangement we can continue and develop our relations,” Gantz added, although he declined to provide additional details on what such an arrangement could include. Gantz also noted that Israel had no opposition to former US president Donald Trump’s deal to sell 50 Lockheed Martin F-35 stealth jets to the UAE during his last days in office. The deal is currently being examined by US President Joe Biden, Reuters reported last month. UAE envoy Mohamed Mahmoud Al Khajah arrived in Israel on Monday, where he met with Israeli President Reuven Rivlin during a ceremony in Jerusalem.

  • Online Islamic Da'wah Narratives in the UK: the Case of Iera
Online Islamic Da'wah Narratives in the UK: The Case of iERA by MIRA A. BAZ A thesis submitted to the University of Birmingham for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Department of Religion and Theology College of Arts and Law University of Birmingham September 2016 University of Birmingham Research Archive e-theses repository This unpublished thesis/dissertation is copyright of the author and/or third parties. ABSTRACT This thesis is an in-depth study into two of the UK charity iERA's da'wah narratives: the Qura'nic embryology 'miracle' and the Kalam Cosmological Argument. While the embryo verses have received scholarly attention, there is little to no research in the da'wah context for both narratives. Berger and Luckmann's social constructionism was applied to both, which were problematic. It was found that iERA constructed its exegesis of the embryo verses by expanding on classical meanings to show harmony with modern science. Additionally, it developed the Cosmological Argument by adapting it to Salafi Islamic beliefs. The construction processes were found to be influenced by an online dialectic between iERA and its Muslim and atheist detractors, causing it to abandon the scientific miracles and modify the Cosmological Argument.
