It consists of material gathered by the firm while acting as executors, trustees, or liquidators in the course of its normal legal business, and of material brought together by James Russel sen, (1787-1858), James Russel jun (d.1860), and Henry Aitken (d.ca.1900), partners in the firm, in connection with their various mining and industrial undertakings. In the former category the papers relating to the Falkirk Gas Co and its successors, the Stirlingshire Midland Junction Railway, and the whaler ‘Juno’ are the most important, while in the latter the large series of bore journals and mine plans give a clear view of the geological knowledge of central Scotland (particularly of the south of West Lothian) in the mid 19th century.     Calatria Summer 1995 No. 8 The Feudal Land Divisions of Denny and Dunipace Part 1 John Reid From the earliest records for Denny and Dunipace, we find that the area had three distinct divisions: Herbertshire, Temple-Denny and Torwood. Herbertshire comprised a significantly greater area than the other two and, in the later feudal period, came to be further divided with the creation of lesser estates such as Dunipace-Livingston and Little Denovan. Each of the major divisions is discussed here. As we should expect, these in turn had numerous subdivisions and they will be the subject of part 2. Then, probably all of the parish of Denny and certainly the greater part of the parish of Dunipace comprised a tract of land which in the earliest documents is named “the lands of Dunipace” and, some time later, “the barony of Dunipace” but which by the middle of the fourteenth century came to be known as the “barony of Herbertshire”. Much later, as we shall see, a significant part which lay in the parish of Denny took the name of South Herbertshire. The remainder of the parish of Denny came into the hands of one of the orders of mediaeval knights at some time prior to the fourteenth century and was known as the Barony of Denny or Temple-Denny.1 Lying in the north-west of Falkirk District, Herbertshire was the second-largest of the baronies in East Stirlingshire.

    Calatria Spring 1994 No. 6 The Feudal Land Divisions of East Stirlingshire John Reid When David I returned from England to claim his crown he brought with him to Scotland a retinue of Anglo-Norman knights. He, like them, had been raised at the English court. Together, they were products of the new style of feudalism which emerged in the twelfth century. With them they brought the attitudes and expectations which were to encourage the adoption of that form of the feudal order to Scotland where, although it remained to some degree recognisably different from that in England, it evolved as essentially that which pertained throughout late mediaeval Europe. The Parishes of East Stirlingshire Falkirk Local History Society Page 1 Calatria Spring 1994 No. 6 It was a force which was to dominate Scottish society from that time until the eighteenth century when a series of revolutionary events; civil, agricultural and industrial, caused a diminuation of feudal power. It was the Jacobite risings which led to the forfeiture of many of the old families in whose hands these hereditary powers had rested, while the later upheavals of that century saw a massive movement of the people from the land with, consequently, a reduction in the authority of the land owners. Feudalism was a product of its time. It was born of the need for kings to retain their realms through military strength. They required the support of men trained in the most effective skills of warfare. These men, the king’s vassals, also required followers. It was, in effect, a power pyramid.

Pittsburgh, PA, USA; (March 17, 2015 revision) ===================================================================================== INTRODUCTION This document is a summary of notes my wife and I have gathered about the early history of her Kidston family ancestry from Scotland. My wife, Elizabeth Kidston Davic (b. 1951, m. 1974) was born in the U.S.A. in western Pennsylvania, second child of Richard Kidston and Gladys Thomas. She always knew that both of her father’s grandparents came from Scotland, but had few details. After retirement, and with more time to get involved with her Kidston ancestry, she obtained information about her grandfather’s family and made a visit to his home town of Glasglow. She became aware of a remarkable document written by a distant cousin, John Kidston Tait (b. 1924, d. 2013), that gave a detailed record of her Scottish ancestry back to her 12th great grandfather, John Kydstoun of Logie parish, Sterlingshire (Tait, 1995: The Kidstons’ of Logie; 1995 edition, 20 Chapters, 4 Addendum). Information provided by Mr. Tait revealed that the Kidston family name had a much older presence at the town of Peebles located in the lowland county of Peeblesshire. Seen today on road maps of Peebles are the place locations Upper Kidston, Nether Kidston, Kidston Mill, Kidston Burn (a stream), and Kidston Bank Woods. Expecting to find some Kidston relatives living at Peebles to contact for information about family history, you can imagine our surprise when we learned that no Kidstons’ have lived at Peebles for more than 700 years.
