‘Peace on earth, goodwill to all’- you may wonder what the angels were on, given the state of the world two thousand years down the line, and our own personal frazzled-ness (is there such a word?) by the time Christmas Day finally arrives. Was it all a mirage, unattainable and unrealistic, the hope of peace, personal and universal, that was invested in the baby Jesus? I think of the boy walking along the beach with his father, confronted by thousands of starfish washed ashore in a storm. The boy starts to throw them back into the sea. ‘What difference will it make?’ asks his father. ‘Well, it’ll make a difference to this one (throw) ….and this one (throw)…. and this one (throw)….. as the boy goes along the beach throwing as many as he could back into the ocean. The point is this; it’s one action at a time, one brick at a time, that good, peace, justice is built. No, the angels were not deluded, but they saw the beginning of a new world where out of love for a good God, something better, something built on eternal values such as we all say we aspire to- good, peace, justice, love-could thrive in human hearts and communities. Beyond the frenetic anxiety which our consumer society tries to force on us (you NEED at least six mega-turkeys for a really happy Christmas, so BUY NOW!!!) deep in our hearts we find the call of the true values of good, justice, peace, love so authentic we gladly sing the angels’ songs- Peace on earth and mercy mild God and sinners reconciled….. So I look forward to welcoming you to one of our Carol services, Christingles, or Christmas services in the parish later in the month. For our part, the Christians of this parish will be praying (one prayer at a time) and living (one deed at a time) so that the new era Jesus inaugurated still has meaning and substance here. Have a very happy Christmas- may it resound with peace, justice, good and love; for you, your family and friends, for our communities, and for our world.

Your vicar, Roy 01423 359003/ [email protected].

NEWS FROM THE CHURCH OF THE EPIPHANY TOCKWITH

We begin with some very exciting news. In October next year the Church of the Epiphany celebrates its 150th Anniversary. There will be a number of events, taking place but the most eagerly anticipated is the visit of Archbishop Sentamu on Sunday 9th October when he will lead a special service. A great deal of planning has yet to take place but all sorts of ideas are coming from church members on how they would like to celebrate. If you have any ideas what sort of special things you would like to see or do then give one of the church wardens a call.

As you might imagine December is another action packed month. Kicking off with Messy Church when early Christmas celebrations begin.

On 12th December we welcome back Classic Reflection Naomi and Hannah twins who first found fame on BBC’s The Voice. For anyone who didn’t see them the last time they came to Tockwith then don’t miss out this time. Their melodic, mellifluous and mesmerizing charm, singing a selection of seasonal songs is sure to enchant you. This time they will also be bringing along some special guest performers. This is part of a nationwide tour and we are privileged that Tockwith Church has been chosen as one of their venues.

The following day on 13th December at 12.45pm the church is sure to be filled with brightly clothed people as we welcome Yorkshire cyclists for their annual Carol Service. This is always a joyful occasion and the cyclists form their own choir especially for the service. This is the 28th year they have converged on Tockwith from all around North, East, West and South Yorkshire. They extend an open invitation to everyone not just members of their group. What makes Tockwith the ideal place is its accessibility from all areas of the county.

That same evening commencing at 6.00pm it is the turn of our village community to join in the Village Carol Service. Tockwith Singers, pupils from Tockwith School and Hand Bell ringers will raise the roof. Traditional carols with readings will we hope set the scene for the festive season ahead. Besides the usual refreshments after the service, for those who want something a little stronger there will be mulled wine.

Last year the church ran a ‘one day’ holiday club which probably enabled parents and guardians to do some last minute Christmas shopping. This proved very popular and we will be running one again on 21st December. We have not needed to advertise this as places were quickly booked up as soon as the date became known to parents.

Christingle services are so popular that it has become necessary to hold two. When you consider the church can comfortably hold around 120 people this is no mean feat. The services will be held at 4pm and 6pm on Christmas Eve. Thank you to all those who have agreed to help out at these services as they are always very busy.

We will be holding a Midnight Holy Communion Service on Christmas Eve starting at 11.30pm. It has been a few years since we have had such a service. We know for many this marks the real beginning of Christmas and it is very important to them.

There will be NO Christmas Day service at Tockwith instead there will be services at 9.00am at All Saints Long Marston or at 10.30am at St Mary’s .

Our final fund raiser for the year will be on Thursday 3rd December at Town Hall. Anyone who is able to do some baking or help on the day is asked to contact Angela. If you are unable to help we would still like to see you.

It seems to have been an action packed year and it is difficult to get an angle on where all the time has gone. It might be something to do with age! Thank you to all those who have supported this magazine. Please encourage people to subscribe to it as it is the only publication that publishes in detail events that are happening in your community, from Church Events, Parish Council and village groups. If you don’t buy it you may miss out on something you wish you hadn’t. For just £8 a year it’s a bargain.

All that remains is to say may this Christmas bring you closer to all those that you treasure in your heart. Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Please note during the winter months unless otherwise stated evening services will commence at 4pm.

CHRISTMAS GREETINGS

I would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas.

I was delighted to attend the recent dedication of the memorial unveiled to remember those who died when a Stirling Bomber crashed in Tockwith 70 years ago. The church service and event was a huge success and it was heartening to see so many people turn out to honour those that passed away as a result of the crash, which happened after the end of World War II. It was also a privilege to meet and talk with family members of those affected by the tragedy and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who made the memorial possible. At this time of year, it is also right to those who work in our public services and also those who volunteer, those who act as carers and do so much unrewarded work for our society.

As ever, I am happy to hear from constituents who would like to raise any issue with me and I will always try and help out where I can.

I hope everyone has a very good time over Christmas and a happy and prosperous 2016.

Nigel Adams MP Member of Parliament for Selby and

Christmas of course celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ, a man whose life and example has given us a value system which remains the greatest force for good in our community. Christmas is a time for families to get together, to see and meet old friends, to think of good times and the good fortune life has given us.

2015 has brought even more strife to the world with the conflicts in Syria and Iraq and the cold blooded murder of the Russian passengers on their aircraft over Sinai, murder on the beach in Tunisia and the recent atrocities in Paris which have shocked the world, let us pray for peace and as the French Bishop at Notre Dame said to his congregation after the terrorist attacks “We must not never despair of peace”

I hope you all have a super Christmas and a happy and healthy 2016, May the joy and peace of Christmas be with you all through the year.

It’s a pleasure and privilege to be your County and District Councillor and thank you for your support over the past years.

Councillor John Savage – Harrogate Borough Council and County Council

I really enjoy this time of the year as it is when I reflect back on what has been achieved during the year both personally and by the Parish Council. I feel very proud of what has been achieved and am very appreciative of everyone that made the ‘Stirling Spirit’ Memorial possible. The Parish Council was able to facilitate defiberators in both Tockwith and Cowthorpe and co-ordinate the setting up of a Community First Responder scheme. On behalf of the whole community thank you to the CFR volunteers who on a rota basis put themselves on call for the benefit of the community. A first class example of showing ‘goodwill to all men’ particularly poignant at this time of year.

Regrettably not everyone enjoys Christmas. For some, it is a particularly difficult time of year: maybe a loved one has died, maybe there is a family rift, or maybe they are anxious about illness, or finance or any number of things. As a Christian myself I believe God is still with us – in the highs and the lows, in the joys and the sorrows. God is with us because God too has experienced them. Peace on earth may seem hard to achieve but every one of us, no matter how young or how old, can do our very best to be a peacemaker within our circle of family, friends, neighbours and work colleagues. What one change could YOU make to your life in 2016 to help bring peace on Earth? Have a peaceful and happy Christmas and New Year.

Norman Waller – Chairman Tockwith with Wilstrop Parish Council Happy Christmas from Tockwith Juniors FC!

Christmas has come round quickly once again for us at TJFC, with every child and I dare say volunteer looking forward to it.

We have had a wonderful start to our new season with growth in the numbers of children attending the club and development of those same children technically in the game we all love.

A hearty thank you to all the volunteers who make our community club so welcoming, as there are a huge amount of people who work tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure every child is safe and has fun, something that Christmas will only help to expand.

If anybody from the larger community would like to get involved in the club please feel free to contact myself and for everybody else we wish you a very Happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

Cheers!!

We have held prices as long as we can but from next year the magazine will be 70p per issue or £8 annual subscription and will be delivered through your door FREE OF CHARGE. We are only able to keep the costs down because more people are taking the magazine. There is still scope to increase our circulation and you can do your bit by encouraging people to purchase it.

THE CYCLISTS CHRISTMAS SERVICE

12.45pm Sunday 13th December

This service will be the 28th year in which cyclists from all parts of Yorkshire will have come to Tockwith.

The formal Lessons and Carols Service has been revised over the years to include Advent and Christmas poems and our Carols have included a variety of popular ones.

The service is organised by cyclists: our organist, Peter Main, the music organiser who is probably the most ever present at this service, Tom Beever, and the choir are all from the local Wednesday Wheelers groups in North and .

The Tockwith Under 5s Group provides refreshments for the hungry cyclists at the village hall both before and after the service.

Everyone is welcome and local residents will see a Church filled with the brightest coloured clothing in any congregation they will see all year.

Do you know anyone that has just moved into the village? Our aim is to make contact with them as soon as possible and tell them what we have to offer as a Church family. Our introducon is by way of delivering a Village and Parish News free of charge. Contact any member of the Church Council if you think someone may not have been seen.

The next “Let’s Do Lunch” is at the Spoed Ox on Thursday 10th December at 12.30. Please contact Mary Shaw on 359003 by Tuesday 8th November if you would like to book a place.

DONATE A BIBLE

We have a scheme that allows families to donate a Bible to the Church dedicated to their children to recognize the date of their Baptisms.

We would like to extend the scheme to anyone who might wish to donate a Bible and dedicate it in memory of a loved one.

If anyone would like to dedicate a Bible they are £15 each and we put the name inside the Bible cover. Please contact Angela Jenkins on 01423 358067.

Did you know that Tockwith Church has a Facebook page?

It is an excellent way to keep in touch with the local community regarding what is happening in church. It’s a great way to keep in touch with busy mums and dads and remind them of events that are coming to church. We pop lots of photos on of various events at church

THE UNSUNG HERO Did you know we have someone that conscientiously litter picks in the village? On a regular basis he walks out with his extendable grab and always picks up around three black sacks full. His estimate of the origins of the litter Pedestrian v Vehicle is as follows. “Within the centre of the village I would guess 90% pedestrians (mostly school age children) dropping sweet wrappers, and 10% from passing vehicles (cans/bottles/cigarette packages). On Kirk Lane, 80% local private vehicles (beer cans/ bottles/Costa coffee cups/fast food wrapping/sweet wrappers/cigarette packets) and 20% commercial vans/agricultural vehicles (waste building materials/large plastic bags of agricultural products). The verges by the playing fields are a lot better than they were, after I had words with the parents, but a significant amount of wrappers and soft drink bottles are still being discarded there”.

What would our village look like were it not for our unsung hero?

Marston Moor Walkers

Five people set off from pretty Cowthorpe Church on a fairly bleak November afternoon with but little light left in the day. It was raining, and had been raining quite hard the previous day, so there was no shortage of puddles, some as big as ponds, on Warfield Lane. Those of us wearing wellies may have been uncomfortable but at least our feet were dry.

We were covering ground we had been on before, but coming at it from the north and it involved a brand new (to us) section of footpath after Ingmanthorpe Grange. Turning on to it we were gratified to find a newly tidied hedge with a broad strip of short grass to stroll along.

But that wasn‟t our only reward; a pair of big parasol fungi were quite a sight. A discussion about whether they were seven inches or nine inches in diameter ensued. This was only surpassed by an animated chat between Janet and Sarah about the merits of the new “gaming sensation” capturing the imagination of young men everywhere: “World of Woolcraft”; or something quite like that…

On a day few would choose to go out, we went out and were glad we did so.

A special Christmas walk is planned for the 14th December (the second Monday of the month). We are going to tackle a complete circuit of the York Walls (3 miles approx.) then go for a Christmas drink and something to eat.

A bus leaves the Spotted Ox at 13:30 and gets to York Railway Station at 2.00pm. There are buses back at 16:27; 15:27 and 18:42. Park and Ride from the new Poppleton Bar stop is an alternative. Alternatively get to the start of the wall steps just before Lendal Bridge by 14:10 when we‟ll set off. All welcome. Please come along. Pete Pozman 01423 359731 07854313112

Volunteers Any spare time? Would you be interested in coming into school to listen to readers. Your help would be really appreciated. Doesn‘t have to be reading— marvellous mathematicians, amazing artists etc, etc would be more than welcome. Please ring the school office on 01423 358375 if you are interested.

Christmas Cards Although it did seem strange doing Christmas cards in September it was for a reason!! Ordering our cards earlier has helped the PFTA make even more money! This year we have had a record number of cards and mugs ordered. Thank you to Mrs Storrie for organising this so efficiently. Speaking of Christmas, you may have noticed we are going to the Panto again. Thanks go to Mrs Algar and Mrs Spurr for organising this.

Space Day Years 1 and 2 On Tuesday 13th October, Years 1 and 2 went on an intergalactic adventure. Captain Darling visited school to introduce us to Andromeda and ensure we had a safe voyage! The children had a fantastic time and had the opportunity to train as space cadets and design their own paper rockets. A superb day was had by all. Mr Skidmore

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE  Give me a sense of humour, Lord. Give me the grace to see a joke, To get some humour out of life, and pass it on to other folk

Christmas carols One night as Christmas approached, some friends decided to go carol singing. A man answered the door of one house, and gasped as they launched into the opening lines of the first carol. Within half a minute, he looked stricken. Soon tears were welling up in his eyes. The carollers sang and sang, and the man looked more and more moved by what he heard. At last the carollers stopped, and one ventured: “I under stand you are sad because our singing reminds you of your happy childhood Christmas days.” The man looked at her with misery in his eyes. “No,” he whispered back. “It‟s just that I am a musician!”

What would you like for Christmas? A little girl went to visit Father Christmas in the local garden centre grotto. He welcomed her with a smile and the question of what she would like for Christmas. The little girl gasped, and stared up at him in horror. "Didn't you get my email?!"

Did I read that sign right?

In a department store: Toilet out of order. Please use floor below.

In a launderette: Automatic washing machines: please remove all your clothes when the light goes out.

Notice in a farmer's field: the farmer allows walkers to cross the field for free, but the bull charges.

In an office: would the person who took the step ladder yesterday please bring it back or further steps will be taken.

THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH

Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass it’s about learning to dance in the rain. Do you have information or a concern about something or someone that you think the police should know about then contact us on [email protected] alternatively call 101. For those callers who are deaf, hard of hearing or speech impaired, the service can be accessed via text phone on 18001 101.

The Parish Council has a permanent agenda item for Police Matters at every Parish Council meeting so if you have any matters to raise with the police you can also contact a Parish Councillor. Property identification – marking, tagging and tracking It’s approaching Christmas and many cycles will be given as presents. Imagine I’m a bike thief and there are two bikes in front of me, both worth about £500; one that is obviously marked and registered (because I can see the sticker telling me so) and the other one not.

I’ve only got a short time to make my mind up about which one I’m going to steal, because I’m late for an important date with my mate and both bikes are locked in the same manner – badly. Now which one am I going to steal?

There are no prizes for guessing “the unmarked one stupid”, because it’s so obvious! So why then are the majority of bikes not marked and registered? Is it lethargy or ignorance of the fact that you can? Bicycle security

According to the British Crime Survey an estimated 480,000 bikes were stolen in and Wales during the period 2009/10. Of these less than a quarter were reported stolen to the police, mainly because the losers didn’t think that the police would arrest the offender or recover the bike. A total of 23,748 bikes were reported stolen to the police in London in 2009-10. This was an increase of nearly 28% on the previous year, so the problem is a growing one.

The police do actually recover many thousands of bikes each year, but because very few of them are security marked or registered with an online database very few are returned to the owners. The police usually keep them for 6 weeks, and if not claimed by the owners, they are auctioned with the money raised going to various charities.

Of course, having your bike stolen is not just about the material loss of the bike, it’s the inconvenience and added costs associated with it; the long wait in the police station or on the phone to report the matter, the search for the insurance papers (if it was insured), the frustration attached to why that £60 ‘D’ lock was so easily forced and so on. Not only that, but bike theft is one of the most often stated reasons for giving up cycling, second only to road safety. Cycling is, of course, a healthy activity and also reduces car use, which in turn benefits our planet.

It is clear then that we should do all we can to minimise our own chances of becoming a victim of bike theft, but at the same time demand better public facilities so that we can better secure our bikes when we’re out and about. TOCKWITH WITH WILSTROP PARISH COUNCIL

Parish Council meetings are, as a rule, held on the third Wednesday of the month. Meetings are not normally held in August or December. Members of the public are welcome to attend these meetings and they start at 7.30pm and are held in Tockwith Church. The minutes of previous Parish Council meetings can be found on its own web site at www.tockwith.gov.uk. The Clerk Dawn Dyason can be contacted on 01423 358009 or email [email protected].

The Parish Council is happy to provide links to local organisations, clubs or charitable bodies so that they can share information to the wider community. Please contact [email protected] if you would like a link. It would be a good time to update your contact telephone numbers and give details of your meeting times etc. We use the web site to distribute important information about matters that effect the Tockwith with Wilstrop Parish area.

Included on the website is information about the services offered by both North Yorkshire County Council and Harrogate Borough Council. This includes advice regarding anti-social behaviour.

LINDEN HOMES - UPDATE

Planning Application for a Residential Development at Southfield Lane, Tockwith

It would appear that Harrogate Borough Council Planners have asked the Developer (Linden Homes) to increase the number of dwellings on the site from 127 to 150 to provide for a larger number/proportion of smaller dwellings resulting in an increase of dwellings per hectare from 32 to 39 dwellings/hectare.

This increase in dwellings is something the Parish Council have not previously been consulted on by either the Developer or Harrogate District Council. At the Parish Council meeting on 18th November Councillors maintained their objection to the housing density of the site and questioned the justification of the high proportion of affordable housing when there is not the proven need for that number. It is the view of the Council that the Developers have been forced to follow a building strategy that has not yet been approved by the District Councillors. The overall scheme is not sympathetic with the rural area and entirely urban in design.

The 150 dwellings will consist of:

13% x 1 bed (Previously 8%) 27% x 2 bed (previously 5%) 50% x 3 bed (previously 34%) 8% x 4 bed (previously 47%) 2% x 5 bed (previously 5%) From the above, the Affordable housing provision will be 60units (previously 50) in a mix of 20% x 1 bed (previously 12%) 62% x 2 bed (no change to previous) 18% x 3 bed (previously 26%) You can view details of the Planning Application and all associated documents on Harrogate Borough Council's planning portal - http://uniformonline.harrogate.gov.uk/online-applications and type in the reference number which is 15/01484/FULMAJ

The application is expected to be considered by the Harrogate District Council Planning Committee on Tuesday 22nd December. If you objected to the previous application you should have been written to for further comment. Letters of objection need to be with Harrogate Borough Council by 17th December otherwise they will be ignored.

Currently the total number of houses in Tockwith for which planning permission is sought is 235 houses at various locations in the village. This is likely to mean a minimum increase in the population of 550 if all are built. We know this is a deep concern to many residents and far from enhancing the village it could inhibit its attractiveness as a rural village if all the necessary infrastructure and support is not put into place. Far from decreasing local bus services the authorities should be alive to the fact they need improving. Other services equally need improvement if the number of affordable homes is to be sustainable.

WORRIED ABOUT SPEEDING TRAFFIC IN TOCKWITH AND COWTHORPE

If you are worried about speeding traffic in Tockwith or Cowthorpe, as most of us are, you can consider helping by volunteering to join Community Speed Watch, which is a community driven road safety initiative, which enables community volunteers to address concerns about inappropriate traffic speed on local roads in their area. It is supported by the Safer Roads Partnership team within North Yorkshire Police, but is managed and run by volunteers in the community. The scheme involves trained volunteers from the community monitoring the speeds of vehicles with approved speed measurement devices. Where vehicle speeds are found to be inappropriate, notice is sent to the drivers by the police with the aim of encouraging them to reduce their speed when driving in future.

Road safety is a significant concern for people in North Yorkshire. Last year, there were 179 accidents on our roads where speed was a factor, and 69 of those were in 30 or 40 mph zones. The Police and Crime Commissioner for North Yorkshire, Julia Mulligan, is committed to improving road safety, so she has championed the introduction of this Community Speed Watch pilot scheme, to test out whether it can help to reduce problems on our roads. The Parish Council has long had concerns about speeding traffic in Tockwith and Cowthorpe and has asked to be considered for a scheme when the pilot schemes have ended. If chosen for a scheme we will need a minimum of six volunteers. We hope that we will receive more news on this in the New Year.

A NOTICE RE: BAPTISMS

Baptisms take place within our normal services – usually a service which will be a Holy Communion plus Baptism. This is because Baptism signifies a welcome into the church, and the beginning of a Christian journey. It only makes sense therefore, if this sacrament takes place within the worshipping community, who along with the family, welcome the child into God‟s great family.

Baptism can only take place when a priest is present at a service, and if you are thinking of having your child baptized, you need to give a long „lead time‟ to the clergy. It may not be possible for a priest to be available on the Sunday you have in mind, and you may need to be flexible over the date, although every effort will be made to meet your wishes. In the first instance, please contact one of the Wardens to arrange a date.

Please note:

Allocated Baptism dates for 2016 - 10th April, and 11th September

THE ‘STIRLING SPIRIT’

Commissioned by the Parish Council

Despite it being a village bulb planting morning on 7th December only two people turned out to do the planting and both of them were Parish Councillors.

The Parish Council managed to meet its funding target with a small amount of money left over. Consideration is now being given as to how best to spend this money for enhancing the site and making sure it is maintained.

Costings are being examined into producing a bound book with a pictorial record of the memorial weekend and build up to it. This may well also be funded by donations.

The Christmas Quiz Christmas and food go together at this time of year when families and friends get together and socialise. There are lots of traditions, folklore, superstitions as well as some interesting things surrounding our traditional British Christmas foods. How much do you know about them and what you are eating? 1. When is “Stir-up Sunday” and what should you do that day? 2. In the Middle Ages, people ate boars or pigs head smothered in mustard on Christmas Day. Which British city is famously associated with mustard? 3. Who made eating turkey at Christmas fashionable? 4. When the Norfolk turkeys were walked to London for the Christmas markets they had their feet protected by "boots" made of sacking or leather. What was used on the feet of geese? 5. Which English monarch was affectionately known as the "Pudding King" because of his associations with Plum Pudding? 6. Which famous writer was commissioned by the British Council in 1946 to contribute recipes for Christmas Pudding and Plum Cake? 7. Why is Christmas Pudding set alight before serving? 8. What is it lucky to find in your Christmas Pudding? 9. True or false - the first mince pies contained meat as well as fruit? 10. When making mincemeat, in which direction should you stir it? 11. How many mince pies should you eat at Christmas to ward off bad luck? 12. Why wouldn‟t you have enjoyed eating a medieval Yule log? 13. If you‟re lucky you might find some chocolate coins in your Christmas stocking but when did the first „chocolate house‟ open in England? 14. What kind of food do Christmas Carollers often demand to have before they will go away? 15. Who recorded in his diary that his Christmas dinner in 1662 was ”a mess of brave plum porridge and a roasted pullet with a bought mince pie” owing to his wife's illness? 16. The forerunner to Christmas Cake was “Twelfth Night Cake”. Through the kitchen door Nothing like a homemade cake at Christmas try this one. Dundee Cake (7” - 8” or 18cm to 20 cm tin) Ingredients 5 oz (150 g) butter, at room temperature 5 oz (150 g) caster sugar 3 large eggs 8 oz (225 g) plain flour, sifted 1 level teaspoon baking powder milk, if necessary 6 oz (175 g) currants 6 oz (175 g) sultanas 2 oz (50 g) glacé cherries, rinsed, dried and cut into halves 2 oz (50 g) mixed whole candied peel, finely chopped 2 level tablespoons ground almonds grated zest 1 small orange grated zest 1 small lemon 2 oz (50 g) whole blanched almonds Method Pre-heat the oven to gas mark 3, 325°F (170°C). 1. Put the butter and sugar in a mixing bowl and beat with a wooden spoon until light and fluffy – or an electric mixer will do this much more quickly. 2. Whisk the eggs separately then, a little at a time, beat them into the creamed butter and sugar. 3. Using a large tablespoon, carefully fold in the flour and baking powder. Your mixture needs to be of a good, soft, dropping consistency so, if it seems too dry, add a dessertspoon of milk. 4. Carefully fold in the currants, sultanas, cherries, mixed peel, ground almonds and orange and lemon zests. Then spoon the mixture into the prepared cake tin, smoothing it out evenly with the back of the spoon. 5. Next arrange the whole almonds in circles on top of the mixture, but do this carefully and lightly; if they are pressed in they will sink during the baking. 6. Place the cake in the centre of the oven and bake for 2-2½ hours or until the centre is firm and springy to the touch. Let it cool before taking it out of the tin. This cake keeps very well in an airtight tin and tastes all the better if kept for a few days before cutting.

Many thanks to everyone for helping make the bonfire a huge success – without your help and support it is impossible to put together

We had a massive amount of delicious homemade cakes and soup for which we were very grateful. Also thanks to everyone who helped – although we were a bit down on numbers at the gate due to the weather it was still a very successful evening. The catering team worked very hard and we had some lovely comments from people as they were leaving the field, so everyone seemed to have enjoyed the evening – all in all a good evening.

We had a huge bonfire (thanks to the Coggrave family), and of course the fireworks were tremendous as ever (thanks to Mick Bell and helpers). Ed Bird ran a small bar this year and again it was well received (thank you Ed). At the AGM retiring President Stuart Coggrave summarised his year

Sam (Blacker) – what an act to follow! Hundreds of miles over mountain and fell, even graphic pictures of swollen feet. I took the crook with trepidation and immediately started thinking what can I do to support the Presidents Charity. Fortunately Pam Retiring President Stuart Coggrave hands over the official symbol of loves gardening and feeding office to Sarah Burckhardt the hungry and I was able to provide her with the perfect outlet. The Open Garden Weekend was a great success thanks to all your support.

Show day came round with a Presidents Tent, a Presidents Car Parking Place, a reserved table in the Friends Marque (not that I ever got there) and a ride in Bobs Presmobile (when it started).

I felt like a King for the day.

Judging – aah well! -they were all so good, almost personal friends of Jane and then Maureen, how could I select just one, then when I did I was told they had won it last year – Oh dear!

Yes it was a full day which I shall remember for a long time. My only regret was that I could not get round the whole show – perhaps we could make it a two day event then it would give future Presidents a chance.

The day ended sat outside the Presidents Tent with friends and committee members (maybe they were all friends) watching the sun go down with a glass in hand. Thank you.”

Sarah’s charities for the year are the Yorkshire Air Ambulance and the Farming Community Network. Her first fundraising event will be a wine tasting evening in The Forge (behind the Spotted Ox) on February 6th 2016? More details to follow.

Sarah was involved with the running of Tockwith show for many years as a committee member and director. She also ran the very successful Farmers Market and helped with various other fundraising activities.

The 70th Anniversary celebrations was very well attended with 180 boogieing to the big band sound of Echo 42. A great night was had by all and it was good to have an event in Wetherby emphasizing that we have a wide catchment area.

SPOT THE DIFFERENCE

The above photographs were taken around 75 years apart. The top one in 2014 and the bottom one between 1930 and 1940. At the turn of this century a band of volunteers who cared about the church yard got together and began a programme of improvement which has culminated in what we have today. An immaculate church yard which we are proud of. Which do you prefer? The spic and span condition of the church yard does not happen by magic but is largely due to a team of volunteers that conscientiously take their turn in a six week rota. It has been said before but most of the grass cutters are aged well over 60 years of age and deserve to have new blood added to the rota so that their stint comes around less often, say every 8 to 9 weeks. All we need is six new volunteers. Are you game? Please contact Peter Harris 358416 if you can help. A message from Acting Chairman Allan Robinson

Firstly very many thanks for helping to deliver our 70th Anniversary Show without your continued support it would not be the success it has become, I would also like to thank Mr Stuart Coggrave our outgoing President for all his hard work and support over the past Year, and not forgetting Lisa Chasney who has just stood down as Chair- man whose direction and guidance has been invaluable but I am pleased to say that Lisa will be staying on in the Team, We have enjoyed a great 40’s Night at the Engine Shed attended by some 180 people and a Bonfire Night albeit a bit damp so again many thanks to all those involved, you will be pleased to know we are already planning and working towards the 2016 Show so we hope to be seeing you all again soon. On a sad note the committee would like to pass on our heartfelt sympathies to the Ray Family for the untimely death of James Ray . James in his time as Landlord of The Spot- ted Ox was a great supporter of Tockwith Show and will be sadly missed by all.

IS IT YOU???

Is it you? Responsible for the poo? Eight smelly deposits did we find And there are probably more left behind, Where did the culprit leave the mess? In the churchyard, OH YES, YES, YES.

Have you ever stepped into dog mess and walked it into your home or car? It’s not nice IS IT? The church grounds are used by many people including children who play on the grass during and after Messy Church. We the volunteer gardeners work very hard all year to keep the grounds neat, tidy and a pleasant and peaceful place to be. We don’t deserve to be disrespected in this manner and left to clear up YOUR DOG MESS. If you know of this person and their dog please NAME AND SHAME them. JUST BE WARNED, WE WILL BE WATCHING!!!

Regards Two very angry volunteer gardeners Diane and Stuart

A TRIBUTE TO JAMES RAY R.I.P. 1945-2015

Few people living in the village could not have heard about the sad and tragic circumstances of James’ death.

When he took over the Spotted Ox in the late 1980’s he was like a breath of fresh air. He transformed the pub from an ordinary drinking pub to one that was well renowned with excellent food and the best kept beer cellar anyone could wish for. In fact the pub became a mecca for connoisseur beer drinkers with York CAMRA members making the Spotted Ox their Pub of the Season in the winter of 1997.

James, with his wife Vivien more often than not beavering away in the kitchen made an excellent team and his mild mannered, affable manner front of house inevitably meant that the pub was a hive of activity lots of customers.

His work for good causes in the village were second to none and was always willing to assist in the staging of fund raising events, making ‘The Forge’ available for much larger functions.

Even though he left the village to live in Easingwold over ten years ago, he was still a frequent visitor to The Spotted Ox, with his son and daughter and their families still living in the village.

Everyone spoke fondly of James and he touched the lives of so many people. He was a master of wit and could tell a good yarn. The world has lost a wonderful man. He was always kind and helpful to both young and old.

Our condolences go out to Viv and family. For someone to have their life end in such a violent manner on one’s birthday is beyond conception. James’ memory will still live on in the hearts and minds of such a lot of people in Tockwith and beyond. nrw

The Club normally meets on the morning of the last Tuesday of the month in Long Marston Village Hall which has a good car park. New members and guests are welcome. Contact the secretary, Mr Bob Ellis on 01423 358 393.

On Tuesday 27th October 2015 Mr Rob Sharpe gave the Club a talk entitled ‗Walking the way of St James‘. Since 2004 Rob has spent time walking the various pilgrim routes to the shrine of St James at Santiago de Compostela. St James was the apostle to the Iberian peninsula and after his martyrdom legend has it that his body was found washed up on Spanish Finistere, hence his shrine close by at Compostela. Pilgrimages to the shrine from across Europe peaked in the 12th century. In the last 30 years pilgrimages to Compostela have revived. Thus 3,000 a year in 1987 grew to 25,000 in 1997 and is now up about a quarter of a million. Rob described his walk from Le Puy in France to the shrine a distance of 1521 km. As it gives him more adaptability he goes alone, though this does not mean he lacks company as so many do the walk there is always a lot of company in the evenings. He keeps his pack down to 8 kg and usually stays in gite d‘etape in France or refuges in Spain. The route takes in some most delightful French villages and wild plants and animals are a delight. Across the border in Spain the route is across high arid plateaus. The people doing the walk are very cosmopolitan. Rob spoke of people from Japan and Quebec amongst others. Rob continued west from Compostela to Cape Finistere, Spain‘s Lands End. A very enjoyable talk.

Thought for Today Personal reflections by Henry Woods

If we did not need reminding the media adverts are already tuned in to the advertisements for Christmas with Father Christmas caps worn by the humans and crackers in the foreground. Some people decry the commercialisation of the festive season, but I do not. As long as such adverts remind everyone whose birthday it is I think they are justified. The sin is to ignore the religious significance of the 25th December and that is a matter between each of us and the Almighty.

Some will say that religion is no longer relevant to the 21st Century and others will quote Marx – “religion is the opium of the people”. The latter assume that it was a derogatory remark while I venture to suggest that it was in admiration. The great experiment in Russia has signally failed and faith does not need drugs. Surveying the world and the Middle East in particular the teaching of Our Lord was and is the only sign of hope to people whose lives families and homes have been ravaged by war. To the refugees any environment which does not echo to the sound of exploding shells and bombs must seem like paradise.

Let us fast track back to the 1st Century AD and sketch out the event of the first Christmas . A scenario linking the present and the past would have Joseph leaving Nazareth to obey the decree of Augustus Disobedience would have exposed the Holy Family to the knock on the door at night a cursory trial and death as a potential trouble maker and his family as an example to others. This sounds familiar and the inn keeper‟s brusque retort that he has no room is equally so as the plight of so many refugees. The stable is the best he can do,

Lastly the heavenly host singing praises to God also has a modern parallel, the service of nine lessons and carols in cathedrals and churches up and down the land. The experience of the shepherds is and was a spiritual one shared by many saints since then and perhaps by us if we will listen to the angels.

Have a wonderful Christmas and welcome Our Lord and Saviour‟s birthday..

The Daily Bread 2016 TOCKWITH VILLAGE HALL SUNDAY 28th FEBRUARY 2016

An original comedy-drama by Kate Bramley- back on tour Feb/ Mar 2016!

Starring Colin Scott-Moncrieff

"clowning skills...that Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin would surely have loved" York Press, September 2014

August de Ville is a master baker and his tiny village bakery is the talk of the town, as the WI ladies flock for miles to sample his sumptuous sponge and beautiful buns.

„Couldn‟t meet a nicer feller‟, the village proclaim. But does the cheery facade hide a dark secret? That he shares the same name as the hated newspaper magnate- responsible for hiding the truth of the Bottledale bank crash- is, August claims, just a sad coincidence. Expect a riotous night of clowning, comedy, Machiavellian subterfuge and live baking! This is Theatre On Your Doorstep at its best with a brand new one-man show, as part of our No Hall Too Small Tour, starring the irrepressible Colin Scott-Moncrieff, actor, clown and raconteur as the shameless August de Ville.

Jottings from the Methodists …… From Peter Raisbeck

Passing through Tockwith last week , the sun was shining on the memorial Sterling Bomber It reminded me of the darker days in my youth when night after night Bomber Command aircraft would take off in the evening ,from the numerous airfields in the North Yorkshire area. The night air was filled with the drone of aircraft climbing to cruising height loaded with bombs heading for Europe. It was even more active when the thousand bomber raids took place. The sky was black with aircraft assembling into formation. Almost every morning the roads were busy with ambulances screaming their way to the RAF hospital in Northallerton, with casualties from the last nights raid. Some of those aircraft would have been active from Marston Moor. Now as we drive or walk through the peaceful village some seventy years after, do we value the freedom and prosperity that was claimed for us in those days ?

Another memory was as a Methodist Preacher taking services in the Methodist Church at Tockwith, and remembering the organ that was an integral part of worship. How wonderful that it has now been restored into the Abbey at Knechtstenden in the North Rhine area of Germany.

It is great to link the fact that from Marston Moor flew aircraft with bombs to devastate the Rhineland, now seventy years later Christmas music will resound from Tockwith Methodist organ, bringing ‘Peace and Good Will’ in that same area.

We need to remind ourselves that we live in a changing world. But one thing that is constant is the love of God. This Christmas may you come to know that love, and link it to your own life, so you may have that special peace, for yourself.

Every Blessing

Peter
