Dear SCCA Media Partners, Welcome to what is truly a new era of the Sports Car Club of America, as the SCCA National Champi- onship Runoffs heads west for the first time in 46 years to Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. This event, made possible with the help of our friends and partners at Mazda and the Sports Car Rac- ing Association of the Monterey Peninsula (SCRAMP), was met with questions at its announcement that have been answered in a big way, with more than 530 drivers on the entry list and a rejunvenaton of the west coast program all season long. While we haven’t been west of the Rockies since River- side International Raceway in 1968, it’s hard to believe it will be that long before we return again. The question on everyone’s mind, even more than usual, is who is going to win? Are there hidden gems on the west coast who may be making their first Runoffs appearance that will make a name for themselves on the national stage, or will the traditional contenders learn a new track quickly enough to hold their titles? My guess is that we’ll see some of each. -

KENDALL TAKES SPRINT PCS TRANS-AM ON STREETS OF MINNEAPOLIS MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (July 6, 1997)- Tom Kendall, driving the No. 11 All Sport Body Quencher Ford Mustang Cobra, won his sixth-straight Trans-Am race after topping runner-up Dorsey Schroeder by 1.779 seconds on the streets on Minneapolis. Jon Gooding finished third, followed by Paul Gentilozzi and Greg Pickett. "Needless to say, I'm ecstatic," said Kendall. "In the first session, we stumbled on to something good, and we went with that setup for both cars for the whole weekend. Throughout the race I had to take the corners one at a time, as opposed to looking a couple corners ahead, because the course is really demanding - It's the best street course I've ever been to." Kendall, of Santa Monica, Calif., started fifth after posting his 10th-consecutive fastest- qualifier effort but was in front of the 23-car field by lap eight, holding the top position for the remainder of the 63-lap, 100.8-mile race. Once Kendall was in the lead he cruised to a relatively easy victory, but getting to the front was a wild ride for the three-time and defending Trans-Am Drivers' Champion. Gentilozzi, in the No. 5 RISO Chevrolet Camaro, started on the pole and led the opening three laps before getting spun on lap four by Brian Simo, driving the No. -
1990 Roush Racing Mustang
1990 Roush Racing Mustang Chassis #20 History Roush Racing Chassis Roush Racing, under contract to Ford, built thirty-two chassis for road racing. These were “silhouette” cars. That is, the cars had tube frames. Bodies were made of fiberglass or carbon fiber. Bodies from a variety of Ford cars could be hung on the frames. Roush raced these chassis with Mustang, Capri, Thunderbird, Cougar, and Merkur bodies. The most commonly used body was the Mustang. Over the course of about fourteen years, Roush used three styles of Mustang bodies. Years Mustang Body Style # 1984 - 1987 1 1987 - 1993 2 1994 – 1997 3 Under the guidance of Rich Reichenbach, Manager of Fabrication and Design at Roush Racing, the suspensions also evolved. From 1984 through early 1990, the suspension updates were minor. In mid- 1990, the suspension, particularly the front suspension, was upgraded. The new suspension is referred to as Phase II suspension. Some early Roush cars were sent back to Livonia, Michigan for suspension upgrades. A final suspension improvement was made to the last two chassis. These were called, of course, Phase III suspensions. Those that have driven cars with the Phase III suspension claim the difference is palpable. Some of the chassis started as “factory” cars. Others were immediately sold to “privateers”. The factory cars were sponsored by Ford, and advertised a Ford division or a Ford product. These Ford sponsors included: Ford, Mustang, Motorcraft, and Ford Electronics. The factory cars achieved success that was nothing short of dominant. The Roush cars won Trans Am championships, IMSA championships, and endurance races such as Daytona and Sebring. -
