The Company History Wine Producers and Estate The Company History Wine producers and estate (Quintas) owners across the Douro demarcated region joined efforts in sharing resources and creating synergies as to achieve what they could not manage alone: Producing high quality wines. Created in 2000 in a clear commitment of excellence, a group of producers brought together for the first time in the Douro region knowledge and experience, past and future, innovation and tradition. Lavradores de Feitoria has wine producers 15, farm owners across three Douro sub-regions – Baixo Corgo, Cima Corgo, Douro Superior – totaling over 600 hectares of land. With a top-notch Technical Team, the LDF management model is all-around innovating, powered by a strong sustainability logic. Thanks to the combined efforts of shareholders, all of whom proud of their region, LDF has built a universe that combines brands, markets and partnerships in a positive project that is confirmed by how well some of the most hard to please critics and public have welcomed its products. Although still young, LDF focuses on obtaining balanced, elegant Wines with ageing potential, along with the best Douro can offer. History behind the Name Marquês de Pombal was the founder of the Região Demarcada do Douro and he selected the best Wines for the most demanding national and foreign wine connoisseurs. These were called “Vinhos de Feitoria” and earned due respect for their extreme quality. At the turn of last century, the Douro wine growers banded together to make a dream - as simple as it was ambitious - come true: bring wine growers (“lavradores”) together in creating “feitoria” Wines. Lavradores/de/feitoria was born, bringing together knowledge and experience, ancient ant modern, from wine-making to wine selling. Created in the year 2000 with some of the best Douro Farms and “terroirs”, totaling over 600 hecatres. The combination of 18 estates, many different grape varieties, vines of different ages, “terroirs” that much contribute to the Wines’ complexity and character, the clear commitment with Douro’s excellence and tradition make the Wines from lavradores/de/feitoria UNIQUE. Wines Blend Wines: Carefully selected grapes from different estates, producing blend wines that transmit the complexity and richness of Douro Wines. Estate Wines: Produced using only grapes from their original estate, these wines are meant to represent their terroir. Unique wines, that faithfully represent their Estates.. And so are born the Lavradores/de/feitoria wines! Vineyards LDF vineyards exist all over the Douro region – Baixo Corgo, Cima Corgo and Douro Superior. They include some portuguese varieties that are at their strongest in the douro terroir. The key to LDF’s success lies in the 18 Estates, 18 different terroirs, 18 Douro locations. Multiple grape varieties and settings, vineyards from different years, altitudes and soils all contribute to creating diversified terroirs – thus contributing to the complexity and character of Lavradores de Feitoria’s Wines. Wine expert Paulo Ruão and LDF’s own Oenology Team use only the highest-grade material to produce Wines. Among the oldest Vineyards (more than 80 years old) we can find the following grape varieties: Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca (aka”French” Touriga), Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca and Alvarelhão for Red and Rosé Wines; Viosinho, Códega and Sauvignon Blanc for White Wines. Blend wines have the “Três Bagos”, “Douro”, “Cheda” and “Gadiva” labels. “Meruge” and “Quinta da Costa” are Estate Wines. Here you can better see how the various Estates are located along the Douro river: The Wines The gods have been generous with the Douro region table wines. Birthplace of the world-famous Port Wine, the unconventionally layed out vineyeards introduced by the ancients have had good results in terms of modern winemaking and onenology. Proof of this is the inclusion of the Douro in the honor board of the World’s Best Wines. LDF’s proposal is one that furthers Douro’s winemaking fame, by adding an adjective: elegance. All LDF Wines are balanced and destined for good food. One is to expect – and demand – from each label a strong personality in terms of terroir, concept or even fantasy. Três Bagos, Lavradores de Feitoria Douro, Gadiva and Cheda varieties combine different types of grape from the most traditional blend wines in the Douro region. When the product is exceptional, unique and reflects the terroir’s own individuality, it is bottled as an Estate Wine. Meruge and Quinta da Costa are the best examples of how versatile the Douro terroir can be. In the Press Lavradores de Feitoria has been acclaimed by the press and consumers, from the very beginning, for the consistency and quality of its products. Created only in 2000, was selected “Best Producer of the Year” in 2005 by Revista de Vinhos (Wine expert magazine). In 2007 ranked seven as Douro’s largest producer of quality wines. Throughout these years, several Wines have received excellent reviews both in Portugal and abroad. .

  • 'Terroir' the Port Vineyards Are Located in the North East of Portugal in The
Geography and ‘terroir’ The Port vineyards are located in the north east of Portugal in the mountainous upper reaches of the Douro River Valley. This region lies about 130 kilometres inland and is protected from the influence of the Atlantic Ocean by the Marão mountains. The vineyard area is hot and dry in summer and cold in winter, excellent conditions for producing the concentrated and powerful wines needed to make port. The coastal area is humid and temperate, providing the ideal conditions in which to age the wine. The grapes are grown and turned into wine in the vineyards of the Douro Valley. In the spring following the harvest, the wine is brought down to the coast to be aged in the warehouses of the Port houses, known as ‘lodges’. The ‘lodges’ are located in Vila Nova de Gaia, a town located on the south bank of the River Douro facing the old city of Oporto. Until about sixty years ago, the wine was brought down the river from the vineyards to the coast in traditional boats called ‘barcos rabelos’. Most of the vineyards are planted on the steep hillsides of the Douro River valley and those of its tributaries, such as the Corgo, the Távora and the Pinhão. The oldest vineyards are planted on ancient walled terraces, some made over two hundred years ago. These have been classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Douro Valley is considered to be one of the most beautiful and spectacular vineyard areas in the world. The soil of the Douro Valley is very stony and is made up of schist, a kind of volcanic rock.

  • Kopke Colheita Port 1957
KOPKE COLHEITA PORT 1957 PORT WINE | PORTUGAL TASTE HISTORY WITH THE OLDEST PORT WINE HOUSE Taste history with the oldest brand of Port wine. Every wine tells a story. Kopke's Colheitas, however, tell a unique story. To taste a wine is to taste history and, in the case of this 1957 Colheita, it means remembering a remarkable event like the signature of the Treaty of Rome, which established the European Economic Community (EEC). VINIFICATION The wine-making process includes the halting of fermentation by adding the grape brandy, the blending of different wines and the ageing of the resulting wine. Fermentation takes place in vats (lagares) at a controlled temperature of 29°C, until the right degree of sweetness (bau- mé) is achieved, at which point the grape brandy is added. A wine of high quality, made from one single harvest. A Colheita wine matures in oak barrels for periods of time that can vary, but never less than 7 years. It is then bottled and sold according to the demands of the market. TASTING NOTES Amber colour with bright golden hues. Complex and delicate on the nose, it reveals resin-like aromas well combined with notes of almond, honey and candied orange peel. Sweet, elegant and balanced on the palate, nicely wrapped in hints of caramel. A long and enduring finish. RECOMMENDATIONS Ideal with walnut and almond cakes. Best served at a temperature between 12 and 14°C. • Fortified Wine Production
BEGINNER FORTIFIED WINE PRODUCTION Content contributed by Kimberly Bricker, Imperial Beverage Material contained in this document applies to multiple course levels. Reference your syllabus to determine specific areas of study. Wine was originally fortified, or strengthened, to better sustain itself during the journey to those importing it. The addition of brandy or neutral grape spirit would kill off the yeasts, which are constantly in the process of converting sugars to alcohol. Once the alcohol by volume reaches 16-18%, yeasts die. The remaining sugars are never converted into alcohol, and the natural sugars of the wine persist. Wines can be fortified at various stages in their fermentation, sweetened or colored with a variety of techniques. Different grape varietals can be used. Grapes can be dried. Wines can be boiled and reduced, cooked, aged in a solera, or aged in a boat that travels halfway across the world and back. They can be enjoyed immediately or aged for over 200 years. Port, Sherry, Madeira, Marsala, Malaga, Montilla-Moriles, and Vin Doux Naturels (VDN’s) are all Fortified Wines. Most people think of stuffy British old men drinking out of little glasses in a mahogany Sherry library with their pinkies out when they “Oh I must’ve been a dreamer think of Sherry- if they think of Sherry. And I must’ve been someone else While that image may have relegated Sherry, as an old-fashioned wine, to the And we should’ve been over back of the cool class, that is only part of Oh Sherry, our love the picture. Both Christopher Columbus Holds on, holds on…” and Ferdinand Magellan filled their ships ‘Oh Sherry’ by Steve Perry with Sherry when they set sail to discover the New World.

A superb value - $9.99 Riocua Mencia 2000, Bierzo - Mencia is a varietal that is related to Cabernet Franc & the region of Bierzo has been producing wines since Roman times. This spends 4 months in new French oak barrels. Very smooth, with great fruit & floral flavors that are balanced by just a hint of toast. Great balance and very complete mouthful - $18.99 Abadia do Cova Seleccion Especial Mencia 2001, Ribera Sacra - Ribera Sacra is actually in Galicia, just over the mountains from Bierzo. Another Mencia that spends 10 months in a mix of French & American oak, this is not as exuberant as the Riocua, but complex & fuller.
