The purpose of the Lutheran Synod Quarterly, as was the purpose of the Clergy Bulletin, is to provide a testimony of the theological position of the Evangelical Lutheran Synod and also to promote the academic growth of her clergy roster by providing scholarly articles, rooted in the inerrancy of the Holy Scriptures and the Confessions of the Evangelical Lutheran Church. Ring Index to Volume 53 ......................................................................427 272 Lutheran Synod Quarterly Vol. 53 Foreword LSQ Vol. 53, No. 4 (December 2013) HE PRESENT VISION STATEMENT OF the Evangelical Lutheran Synod (ELS) is “In the next five years, we will learn to engage others more faithfully with Jesus.” With this vision Tstatement in mind, the Rev. Timothy Hartwig wrote the essay entitled “How Did Paul Engage Others with Jesus in Athens?” The essay is not purely an exegetical commentary on Acts 17:16–34, rather its scope is focused on answering the question, “How did Paul engage others with Jesus in Athens?” The Rev. Hartwig is pastor of Peace Lutheran Church in North Mankato, Minnesota. Americans are strongly influenced by postmodernism. The center of postmodernism is the view that there is no real truth—that people in different cultures see things certain ways because their culture has conditioned them to see things in that way. In the essay, “Preaching Christ to a Postmodern World,” Mr. Allen Quist, a member of ELS Doctrine Committee, summarizes postmodernism and gives guid- ance for Christians proclaiming the Gospel in a postmodern world. Mr. Quist wrote this article in consultation with the other members of the Doctrine Committee. On April 11–12, 2013, a free conference was held at Parkland Lutheran Church and School in Tacoma, Washington. This was the third time presidents of the Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod (LCMS), the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS), and the Evangelical Lutheran Synod (ELS) convened for informal discussions in a free 274 Lutheran Synod Quarterly Vol. 53 conferencing format. ELS President, the Rev. John A. Moldstad, presented an essay entitled, “Grace Before, In and For All Time: The Election Controversy with Application to Inter-church Dialogue.” The Rev. Mark Schroeder, president of WELS, and the Rev. Matthew Harrison, president of the LCMS, served as reactors. Pres. Moldstad’s essay is printed in this issue of the Quarterly due to its significance in relating the intriguing doctrinal influences on the historical develop- ment of the ELS, as well as the anticipated implications for future church-to-church discussions. We hope our readers will appreciate how lessons from our forefathers impact the life of our church body today as we seek to preserve the gospel of our Lord Jesus both now and for succeeding generations. January 19, 2013, marked the 450th anniversary of the Heidelberg Catechism. The Heidelberg Catechism has its origin in the Palatinate and was intended to bring harmony among the various divisions in Protestantism at the time. While this was the intention of its writers, it is obvious to confessional Lutherans that the catechism embraces a mild form of Calvinism. The Heidelberg Catechism today is a confession espoused by nearly all Calvinistic Reformed Churches. This essay gives a brief history of the catechism and its contents with special emphasis on the doctrines of Baptism and the Lord’s Supper. This year is the centennial of the death of George Stoeckhardt (1842–1913). His life spanned two continents and two centuries. He was a stalwart Lutheran confessor and one of the most important exegetes of the Synodical Conference. He had a profound influence on generations of LCMS pastors, inspired the founders of Wauwatosa Theology in the WELS, and through his commentaries and sermon books was a great blessing to our synod. Stoeckhardt’s monogram, entitled Lectures on the Three Letters of John, gives an interesting defense for including the Comma Johanneum in the sacred text. TheComma Johanneum is a section of 1 John 5:7–8 not found in many of the ancient manuscripts or writings of the early church fathers but is a clear witness to the doctrine of the Trinity: “For there are three that bear witness in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit; and these three are one. And there are three that bear witness on earth: the Spirit, the water, and the blood; and these three agree as one.” His defense is found in the article entitled “Stoeckhardt and the Comma Johanneum.” Stoeckhardt also explains that the Spirit, the water, and the blood point to the means of grace: the waters of Baptism, the blood of the Lord’s Supper, and the Word which is spirit and life. No. 4 275 This year marks a number of other important anniversaries, including the 170th anniversary of the Old Lutheran immigration in 1843, the 350th anniversary of the birth of August Hermann Francke, the 100th anniversary of The Lutheran Hymnary (1913), and the 20th anniversary of the founding of the Confessional Evangelical Lutheran Conference (CELC) in 1993. Also included in this issue is a review of the book The Gospel Preached Through Music: The Purpose and Practice of Lutheran Church Music by Daniel Zager. It was reviewed by the Rev. Hartwig Pastor, Peace Lutheran Church North Mankato, Minnesota LSQ Vol. 53, No. 4 (December 2013) HE AUTHOR DOES NOT HAVE the fondest memories of Athens. He arrived there a day behind schedule. The eight-hour layover was a rush from one ruined temple to another. There are Ta lot of temples in Athens! Maybe more time to stroll leisurely down the streets, breathing in the culture; maybe looking with unrushed eyes at the optically perfect marble columns would have left a different impres- sion. But alas, eight hours of guided tours and waiting in the airport left a sour taste. Some commentators have proposed that Paul’s trip to Athens didn’t create the fondest memories either, suggesting that he left Athens disap- pointed. They speculate that his work there did not enjoy the success that he had elsewhere. Some of them even go so far as to suggest that he tried something new there and failed, even taking his statement in 1 Corinthians, “For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified” (2:2), to be the result of his failed experiment in Athens. The text before us supports none of this specula- tion. The Paul we see in Athens is the same one we see in Jerusalem, in Antioch, in Philippi, in Pisidian Antioch, in Corinth, in every place that Paul travelled. It is the same Paul, being all things to all men that he might save some.1 This paper is not purely an exegetical commentary of Acts 17:16–34.

    December 2014 When the time came for the purification rites required by the Law of Moses, Joseph and Mary took him to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, “Every firstborn male is to be consecrated to the Lord”), and to offer a sacrifice in keeping with what is said in the Law of the Lord: “a pair of doves or two young pigeons.” (Luke 2:22–24) At this time of year, the religious Christian community celebrates the birth of Jesus, the Messiah. My family and I have always participated in these celebrations, though as Jewish believers in Jesus, we’ve adopted a more restrained level of holiday cultural activity (decorating, shopping, party-attending) than many around us. We’ve also always observed Chanukah, which begins this year on the evening of Tuesday, December 16, and concludes eight days later at sundown on December 24. Though Chanukah, also known as the Feast of Dedication or Festival of Lights, is a minor feast in the yearly Jewish ritual cycle, our family always lit the candles in our menorah. As we did, we revisited the exciting account of the Maccabean victory over Antiochus IV Epiphanes in 164 BC, and thanked God for the story of the cleansed, rededicated temple and the sacred oil lamp that burned for eight miraculous days when it only had enough oil for a single day. In the spiritual darkness of those days, seeing the light burn once again in the holy place after years of darkness and idol worship must have been pure joy for the Maccabees.

Lauren Winner's best-selling memoir of her conversion from Reform Judaism to Orthodox Judaism and then on to evangelical Christianity is one of the best reads of the last decade, and her story illustrates one type of conversion by Jews to the Christian faith. Her aesthetically-prompted and liturgically-shaped conversion story is as difficult to plot as it is joyous to read—she tells us about things that do not matter to conversion theory while she does not tell us about things that do matter. In her defense, she did not write her story so the theoretically-inclined could analyze her con- version. Here is a defining moment in her conversion story:1 My favorite spot at The Cloisters was a room downstairs called the Treasury. In glass cases were small fragile reliquaries and icons and prayer books. In one case was a tiny psalter and Book of Hours. It lay open to a picture of Christ's arrest. I could barely read the Latin. Sometimes I would stand in front of that psalter for an hour. I wanted to hold it in my hand. My boyfriend in college was Dov, an Orthodox Jew from Westchester County whom I had met through Rabbi M. Dov thought all this [her studying American Christianity and interest in things Christian] was weird. He watched me watch the Book of Hours, and he watched me write endless papers about religious re- vivals in the South.

Conceived in controversy, the first copy issued from the presses on October 7, 1935. Machen spearheaded the publication of the Guardian with the assistance of a group of ministers and laymen in the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America (PCUSA). The proximate cause of the Guardian was the disagreement between Machen and Dr. Samuel G. Craig, editor of Christianity Today (1930-1949). The nether cause was Machen's escalating struggle with modernism in the PCUSA. Machen had led in the formation of the Presbyterian Constitutional Covenant Union which was organized June 27, 1935 in Philadelphia. This group was committed to: (1) reform of the PCUSA; or (2) "failing that, to continue the true spiritual succession of that church in a body distinct from the existing organization." Dr. Craig had editorially questioned the wisdom of such a Union in the September 1935 issue of Christianity Today.

The Legacy of Jakob Aall Ottesen Of the three fathers who have been shaped into a sort of holy trinity for the Norwegian Synod, the “forgotten” or less visible person of that trinity might be Jakob Aall Ottesen. Perhaps the metaphor is objectionable, and we might want rather to use the image of that Russian drawn carriage/sleigh, the troika. At least in the parochial boundaries of the Norwegian Synod, Preus and Koren both served as Synod president (the two holding forth from 1862 until 1910), while Ottesen was once elected a district president and declined to serve, and a year later was called to teach theology at Luther College, but declined that as well. Preus was front and center, along with Koren, in the election controversy which rocked Midwestern Lutheranism in the 1880s, while Ottesen primarily wrote articles and letters. In an even earlier time of controversy with other Norwegian Lutherans, Ottesen was co-editor with Preus of Kirkelig Maanedstidende for den norsk-evangelisk-lutherske Kirke i Amerika, the church paper for the Synod, and he wielded a great influence there. Note: pre-publication version From Handmaiden of Theology to Handmaiden of Area Studies: Philological Approaches to Arabic-Islamic Studies in Norway Nora S. Eggen University of Oslo, Oslo, NORWAY ABSTRACT This article presents the history of Arabic-Islamic studies in Norway, within the wider framework of Scandinavia and Europe. While Semitic studies reach well back into the sixteenth century in Sweden and Denmark, it was only in the early nineteenth century that the study of Arabic was introduced into Norway with the establishment of a university in 1811. From their inception, Arabic and Semitic studies were instrumental in reaching out into the world as well as in defining the national self-identity. I discuss these developments and the role and function philology played in various studies, programmes and disciplines, taking into account the shifting historical and socio-cultural contexts. Issues of relevance and utility value as well as diverse political and economic concerns have throughout history formed the structural frameworks. Simultaneously, however, I demonstrate how individual motivation and impetus has continued to be of vital importance to the development of the fields. Finally, I discuss some of the current challenges and prospects for philological studies, and argue for the continued relevance for these methodological approaches.
