December 2014 When the time came for the purification rites required by the Law of Moses, Joseph and Mary took him to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, “Every firstborn male is to be consecrated to the Lord”), and to offer a sacrifice in keeping with what is said in the Law of the Lord: “a pair of doves or two young pigeons.” (Luke 2:22–24) At this time of year, the religious Christian community celebrates the birth of Jesus, the Messiah. My family and I have always participated in these celebrations, though as Jewish believers in Jesus, we’ve adopted a more restrained level of holiday cultural activity (decorating, shopping, party-attending) than many around us. We’ve also always observed Chanukah, which begins this year on the evening of Tuesday, December 16, and concludes eight days later at sundown on December 24. Though Chanukah, also known as the Feast of Dedication or Festival of Lights, is a minor feast in the yearly Jewish ritual cycle, our family always lit the candles in our menorah. As we did, we revisited the exciting account of the Maccabean victory over Antiochus IV Epiphanes in 164 BC, and thanked God for the story of the cleansed, rededicated temple and the sacred oil lamp that burned for eight miraculous days when it only had enough oil for a single day. In the spiritual darkness of those days, seeing the light burn once again in the holy place after years of darkness and idol worship must have been pure joy for the Maccabees. -

The Life of Aaron and the Origins of the Christian Community of Philae The Life of Aaron as Spiritual Communication The study of Late Antique hagiography has benefited from a series of recent publications following the commemoration of the 25th anniversary of Peter Brown’s seminal article ‘The Rise and Function of the Holy Man in Late Antiquity’ of 1971.197 In these publications, there seems to be an overall tendency to look at the narrative principally as a discourse between author and public. -

JETS 48/4 (December 2005) 771-800 FROM TEL AVIV TO NAZARETH: WHY JEWS BECOME MESSIANIC JEWS SCOT MCKNIGHT WITH R. BOAZ JOHNSON* I. INTRODUCTION Plotting conversion stories is my sacred hobby. Lauren Winner's best-selling memoir of her conversion from Reform Judaism to Orthodox Judaism and then on to evangelical Christianity is one of the best reads of the last decade, and her story illustrates one type of conversion by Jews to the Christian faith. Her aesthetically-prompted and liturgically-shaped conversion story is as difficult to plot as it is joyous to read—she tells us about things that do not matter to conversion theory while she does not tell us about things that do matter. In her defense, she did not write her story so the theoretically-inclined could analyze her con- version. Here is a defining moment in her conversion story:1 My favorite spot at The Cloisters was a room downstairs called the Treasury. In glass cases were small fragile reliquaries and icons and prayer books. In one case was a tiny psalter and Book of Hours. It lay open to a picture of Christ's arrest. I could barely read the Latin. Sometimes I would stand in front of that psalter for an hour. I wanted to hold it in my hand. My boyfriend in college was Dov, an Orthodox Jew from Westchester County whom I had met through Rabbi M. Dov thought all this [her studying American Christianity and interest in things Christian] was weird. He watched me watch the Book of Hours, and he watched me write endless papers about religious re- vivals in the South. -

A. Goddard This thesis offers a close examination of the word “secular” from the fifth century to the seventeenth century and examines its origins and the change in its usage over the course of the medieval and early modern periods, primarily in England. Existing scholarship on the idea of the secular has ignored the meaning of the word and how its usage adapted to social and political change. I argue that “secular” is not a static concept nor does it simply signify a society stripped of religion, but rather, the term occupies a complex neutral space that shifts within changing and evolving demarcations between sacred and temporal circumstances. Furthermore, I argue that the secular has had a long-standing place in Christain thought, though its role changed to meet the historical needs of Christain societies. In addition to undertaking a close reading of primary sources and foundational thinkers, I utilized text analysis software throughout my research in order to establish statistical data that tracks the changes in usage of the term from 1473-1603. Athens between East and West: Athenian Elite Self-Presentation and the Durability of Traditional Cult in Late Antiquity Edward Watts T IS GENERALLY ACCEPTED that the urban centers of the Greek-speaking east more quickly dismantled traditional religious infrastructure and disrupted traditional religious I 1 customs than did cities in the west. The city of Athens, how- ever, has always fit awkwardly in this narrative. Alexandria, long Athens’ rival for cultural supremacy in the Greek world, saw its urban infrastructure violently and effectively Christian- ized in the early 390s by the campaigns and construction projects of the bishop Theophilus.2 Alexandria’s civic and political life arguably followed suit after the violence that accompanied the consolidation of episcopal power by Theo- philus’ successor Cyril and the murder of the philosopher Hypatia in the early 410s.3 Antioch and its hinterland saw its pagan institutions disrupted gradually, first through isolated incidents like the conversion (and ultimate destruction) of the 1 See, among others, C.
