Auf 18 Vertikal-Bildschirmen in und bei der Predi- gerkirche zeigt er mehr als 50 einminütige Filme, die im italienischen Lucca u.a. mit Tanzschaffenden gedreht wur- den. Greenaway soll eine halbe Stunde nach Eintreffen der Anfrage des Basler Vereins Totentanz (initiiert von Carmen Bregy, Matthias Buschle und Pfarrer Michael Bangert) seine Mitarbeit zugesagt haben und freut sich darauf, mit den Mitteln der visuellen Sprache vom Tod zu erzählen. Das Kino sieht er, wie er bei einem Besuch in Basel erläuterte, als würdigen Nachfolger der historischen Wandmalerei, glaubt jedoch, dass wir heute das erkennende Sehen kaum Peter beherrschen. I think your personal experience shapes the way you view the world around you. With 15 years of civil war in Lebanon and conflict in the Middle East ever since I can remember, there is nothing very uplifting about it and this inevitably filters through my work. So, yes, there is darkness but there is lightness as well. There are often two sides to each piece, not just one meaning. Duality and contradictions exist in most of the work: darkness and light, heaviness and humor, beauty and danger… Humor? That’s surprising — I don’t see a lot of humor in a piece like The Negotiating Table, for example. Well, take my performance piece Roadworks, for instance. I walked around the streets of Brixton dragging heavy Dr. Martens boots — the boots that the police and skin heads used to wear — behind my bare feet so that you have the symbol of vulnerability, this woman being followed by the boots of the state and racist thugs. But it is a surreal and humorous gesture. People interacted with it! I kept hearing comments like, “Oh, the Invisible Man,” “Does she know she’s being followed?” I like using humor to deflate those heavy situations. There are also contradictions in the installation Light Sentence. The rigidity of the cages is contradicted by the fluidity of the moving shadows.

    Sites And Senses 11 Chapter 1 Sites and Senses Mapping Palestinian Territories in Mona Hatoum’s Sculpture Present Tense Anneke Schulenberg In April 1996, Mona Hatoum, a British artist of Palestinian origin, installed a work entitled Present Tense at the Anadiel Gallery in East Jerusalem, an area annexed by Israel in 1967 (Figs 1.1–1.2).1 On the floor of the gallery, Hatoum laid 2400 pieces of soap in a rectangular shape. The soap was Nablus soap, a tradi- tional Palestinian product made of olive oil. Hatoum pressed tiny red glass beads in curved lines into the soap (Fig. 1.2). At first sight, the lines seem to make up abstract forms, but in fact they depict part of the occupied Palestinian territories that, as determined by the 1993 Oslo Accords, Israel should have handed back to the Palestinian authorities. Hatoum came across a map of these territories on the first day of her visit to Jerusalem. In Present Tense, she omitted the outlines of the map of Israel, only drawing the Palestinian territo- ries: fragmented parcels of land, scattered across Israel, resembling an archi- pelago. Present Tense was originally a site-specific sculpture as the work was made specifically for that exhibition in Jerusalem and was an immediate response to the site. By inscribing the map of the Oslo Accords on a local traditional prod- uct, Hatoum investigated the political, social and cultural dynamics at play within the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Drawing only the Palestinian territories in Israel on the soap, Hatoum focused on the Palestinian situation within the conflict.
