REQUEST FOR SABBATICAL LEAVE. I am requesting a 100% sabbatical leave for the 2019-2020 academic year. Employed as a fulltime faculty member at Cerritos College since August 2005, I have never requested sabbatical leave during the past thirteen years of service. II. PURPOSE OF LEAVE Scientific advancements and technological capabilities, most notably within the last few decades, have evolved at ever-accelerating rates. Artists, like everyone else, now live in a contemporary world completely restructured by recent phenomena such as satellite imagery, augmented reality, digital surveillance, mass extinctions, artificial intelligence, prosthetic limbs, climate change, big data, genetic modification, drone warfare, biometrics, computer viruses, and social media (and that’s by no means meant to be an all-inclusive list). -

Alvar Aalto Researchers’ Network Seminar – Why Aalto? 9-10 June 2017, Jyväskylä, Finland Alvar Aalto’s associative geometries Holger Hoffmann Prof. Dipl.-Ing., Architekt BDA Fay Jones School of Architecture and Design Why Aalto?, 3rd Alvar Aalto Researchers Network Seminar, Jyväskylä 2017 Prof. Holger Hoffmann, Bergische Universität Wuppertal, April 30th, 2017 Paper Proposal ALVAR AALTO‘S ASSOCIATIVE GEOMETRIES This paper, written from a practitioner’s point of view, aims at describing Alvar Aalto’s use of associative geometries as an inspiration for contemporary computational design techniques and his potential influence on a place-specific version of today’s digital modernism. In architecture the introduction of digital design and communication techniques during the 1990s has established a global discourse on complexity and the relation between the universal and the specific. And however the great potential of computer technology lies in the differentiation and specification of architectural solutions, ‘place’ and especially ‘place-form’ has not been of greatest interest since. Therefore I will try to build a narrative that describes the possibilities of Aalto’s “elastic standardization” as a method of well-structured differentiation in relation to historical and contemporary methods of constructing complexity. I will then use a brief geometrical analysis of Aalto’s “Neue Vahr”-building to hint at a potential relation of his work to the concept of ‘difference and repetition’ that is one of the cornerstones of contemporary ‘parametric design’. With the help of two projects (one academic, one professional) I will furthermore try to show the capability of such an approach to open the merely generic formal vocabulary of so-called “parametricism” to contextual or regional necessities in a ‘beyond-digital’ way. -

At the White House in February, I joined President Bush and Mrs. Bush to launch the largest and most ambitious nationwide initiative in NEH’s history: Picturing America, the newest element of our We the People program. Through Picturing America, NEH is distributing forty reproductions of American art masterpieces to schools and public libraries nationwide—where they will help stu- dents of all ages connect with the people, places, events, and ideas that have shaped our country. The selected works of art represent a broad range of American history and artistic achieve- ment, including Emanuel Leutze’s painting of Washington Crossing the Delaware; Mary Cassatt’s The Boating Party; the Chrysler Building in New York City; Norman Rockwell’s iconic Freedom of Speech; and James Karales’s stunning photo of the Selma-to-Montgomery March for Voting Rights in 1965. Accompanying the reproductions are a teacher’s guide and a dynamic website with ideas for using the images in the study of American history, literature, civics, and other subjects. During the first round of applications for Picturing America awards in the spring of 2008, nearly one-fifth of all the schools and public libraries in America applied for the program. In the fall, the first Picturing America sets arrived at more than 26,000 institutions nationwide, and we opened a second application window for Picturing America awards that will be distributed in 2009. -

For people living in Spain, the Netherlands, Germany, France, and Italy, clothing reflected and defined for others who one was socially and culturally. Merchants dressed differently than peasants; Italians dressed differently than the French.1 Clothing, or costume, was seen as a principal signifier of social identity; it marked different social orders within Europe, and it was a vehicle by which Europeans could understand the peoples of foreign cultures. Consequently, Eur- opeans became interested in how people from different regions and social ranks dressed, a fascination that gave rise in the mid-sixteenth century to a new publishing venture and book genre, the costume book (Figure 1). -

Guggenheim Museum, New York, Gift, Michael Bennett 80.2717 Chryssa began making stamped paintings based on the New York Times in 1958 and continued to do so into the 1970s. To create these works, she had rubber stamps produced based on portions of the newspaper before, as she described it, covering “the entire area [of a canvas] with a fragment repeated precisely.” Over time Chryssa’s treatment of the motif became increasingly abstract, as she more strictly adhered to a gridded composition and selected sections of newsprint with type too small to be legibly rendered in rubber. By deemphasizing the content and format of the newspaper, she redirected focus to the tension between mechanized reproduction and her careful process of stamping by hand. Jaffin 77.2291 With its dense profusion of finely drawn lines, Jacob El Hanani’s Untitled #171 is a feat of physical endurance, patience, and precision. As the artist said, “It is a personal challenge to bring drawing to the extreme and see how far my eyes and fingers can go.” Rather than approach this effort as an end unto itself, El Hanani has often related it to Jewish traditions of handwriting religious texts—a parallel suggesting a desire to transcend the self through a devotional level of discipline. This aspiration is given form in the way the short, variously weighted lines lose their discreteness from afar and blend into a vaporous whole. -

31 COMMENTARY "Comments on the Historicity of Topiltzin Quetzalcoatl, Tollan, and the Toltecs" by Michael E. Smith University at Albany, State University of New York Can we believe Aztec historical accounts about Topiltzin Quetzalcoatl, Tollan, and other Toltec phenomena? The fascinating and important recent exchange in the Nahua Newsletter between H. B. Nicholson and Michel Graulich focused on this question. Stimulated partly by this debate and partly by a recent invitation to contribute an essay to an edited volume on Tula and Chichén Itzá (Smith n.d.), I have taken a new look at Aztec and Maya native historical traditions within the context of comparative oral histories from around the world. This exercise suggests that conquest-period native historical accounts are unlikely to preserve reliable information about events from the Early Postclassic period. Surviving accounts of the Toltecs, the Itzas (prior to Mayapan), Topiltzin Quetzalcoatl, Tula, and Chichén Itzá all belong more to the realm of myth than history. In the spirit of encouraging discussion and debate, I offer a summary here of my views on early Aztec native history; a more complete version of which, including discussion of the Maya Chilam Balam accounts, will be published in Smith (n.d.). I have long thought that Mesoamericanists have been far too credulous in their acceptance of native historical sources; this is an example of what historian David Fischer (1970:58-61) calls "the fallacy of misplaced literalism." Aztec native history was an oral genre that employed painted books as mnemonic devices to aid the historian or scribe in their recitation (Calnek 1978; Nicholson 1971). -

This led them to an absorption with the Jewish creation myths in Genesis, which they obsessively reinterpreted to formulate allegorical explanations of how humans ended up trapped in the world of matter. The basic Gnostic story, which varied in details from teacher to teacher, was this: In the beginning there was an unknowable, immaterial, and invisible God, sometimes called the Father of All and sometimes by other names. “He” was neither male nor female, and was composed of an implicitly finite amount of a living nonphysical substance. Surrounding this God was a great empty region called the Pleroma (the fullness). Beyond the Pleroma lay empty space. The God acted to fill the Pleroma through a series of emanations, a squeezing off of small portions of his/its nonphysical energetic divine material. In most accounts there are thirty emanations in fifteen complementary pairs, each getting slightly less of the divine material and therefore being slightly weaker. The emanations are called Aeons (eternities) and are mostly named personifications in Greek of abstract ideas. -

4.0 A GUIDE TO WARRIOR SUITS Here follows a broad outline of the various warrior suits that were known to be associated with the Aztecs. It should be noted that all of these showy feather suits were available to the noblemen only, and could never be worn by the common man. The prime source of information for the following chapter is from the tribute lists in the Codex Mendoza and the Matricula de Tributos, the suit and banner lists in the Primeros Memoriales plus some commentary in Duran's Book of the Gods, History of the Indies and some of the Florentine Codex. The first two give clear examples of many different types of war suits, as well as a defined list of warrior and priest suits with their associated rank. Unfortunately they do not show all the suit types possible, nor do they explain what several of the suit types sent in tribute were for. Trying to mesh these sources is not neat, and some interpretation is required. While Chapter 3 examined the tribute from various provinces on a province by province basis, this chapter concentrates only on the warrior suit types as individual topics. The Mendoza Noble Warrior List (Section 4.2) and Priest Warrior List (Section 4.3) are further expanded upon with information from the tribute lists and then any other primary sources with relevant information or images. These lists are then followed up by a list of suit types not covered by either of these two lists (Section 4.4.) This section of the documentation does not cover the organisational or ranking levels of the suits except as a method for listing the suits for discussion. -

Yet, «axonometric» is a misnomer if uniformly applied to describe Choisy’s pictorial parallel projections. The nomenclature of parallel projection is often ambiguous and confusing. Yet, the actual history of parallel projection reveals a drawing system delineated by oblique and axonometric projections which relate to inherent spatial differences. By clarifying the intrinsic demarcations between these two forms of parallel pro- jection, one can discern that Choisy not only used the two spatial classes of pictor- ial parallel projection, the oblique and the orthographic axonometric, but in fact manipulated their inherent differences to communicate his theory of architecture. Parallel projection is a form of pictorial representation in which the projectors are parallel. Unlike perspective projection, in which the projectors meet at a fixed point in space, parallel projectors are said to meet at infinity. Oblique and axonometric projections are differentiated by the directions of their parallel pro- jectors. Oblique projection is delineated by projectors oblique to the plane of pro- jection, whereas the orthographic axonometric projection is defined by projectors perpendicular to the plane of projection. Axonometric projection is differentiated relative to its angles of rotation to the picture plane. When all three axes are ro- tated so that each is equally inclined to the plane of projection, the axonometric projection is isometric; all three axes are foreshortened and scaled equally.
