PREFACE DE PIERRE RESTANY Au Terme D'un PREFACE DE PIERRE RESTANY Au terme d©un parcours déjà vieux de plus de 30 ans et que je me suis attaché à suivre depuis le début de son émergence, ma réflexion sur le travail de Fred Forest s©est opérée à plusieurs niveaux. Chaque constat a été pour moi l©occasion de mesurer l©envergure conceptuelle de la notion d©art à travers sa projection directe sur la trame vitale du tissu social. C©est toujours l©artiste en Forest qui m©a permis d©apprécier, par rapport à la pulsion expressive collective, l©évolution du domaine conceptuel de l©esthétique. C©est en effet un seul et même artiste, Fred Forest, qui est passé de l©art sociologique à l©anthropologie télématique, en passant par l©esthétique de la communication. Fred Forest est apparu sur le panora- ma expansif de ce questionnement artistique au moment où l©Occident vivait le symptôme avant-coureur d©un changement radical de société et du système de production, c©est-à-dire en mai 1968. C©est à ce moment- là que le rapport art-communication a changé à la fois de vitesse et d©amplitude. La communication, en fait, a acquis une nouvelle conscience de son territoire artistique, des droits et du devoir qui en ré- sultaient : sa vertu critique et sa vertu d©éveil en ce qui concerne les cri- tères humains et humanistes de la transmission d©un message gratifiant dans sa vérité et non plus dans sa beauté. Cette réflexion sur le caractère profondément humain et poétique de l©ensemble des dispositifs et des méthodes d©intervention sur le social était, bien évidemment, dans l©air du temps au début des années 70 et elle a constitué le moment fort des activités du collectif d©art sociologique qui a rassemblé Hervé Fisher, Fred Forest et Jean-Marc Thénot. Le passage de l©art sociologique à l©es- thétique de la communication, qui se concrétise chez Fred Forest vers les années 1983, pose la barre de cette réflexion à un niveau supérieur. 9 Un niveau qui exclut toute fracture, toute rupture dans l©évolution du questionnement artistique. Il s©agit chez Forest d©une suite logique, d©une adaptation fondamentale à la communication qui se caractérisent, dans les années 80, comme un moyen d©investigation du réel de plus en plus complexe, de plus en plus fluide et de plus en plus riche dans les mul- tiples facettes de son expressivité autonome. Quand Fred Forest parle d©esthétique de la communication, il pose le problème d©une véritable morale du langage, d©une philosophie de l©action conçue en termes es- thétiques. Les dispositifs humains sont projetés dans le social de la même manière que la poésie est projetée dans le langage. La communi- cation relève de l©esthétique, non pas au niveau de l©apport référentiel, mais au niveau de la conscience critique : son message est de moins en moins conçu comme "beau" mais de plus en plus comme "vrai". Pas- sage capital que celui du beau au vrai. Du beau de l©esthétique cano- nique au vrai de la sociologie artistique, c©est-à-dire au vrai qui em- prunte aux techniques de la communication tous les éléments structurels qui lui permettent de bâtir un système. Un système conçu à partir de dispositifs et de moyens stratégiques qui sont des apparences tendant à la diffusion de la vérité. L©esthétique de la communication correspond justement à ce passage d©un art de la représentation à un art de la pré- sentation. L©activité esthétique de Fred dans la communication consiste à assumer intégralement la logique opérationnelle de ses systèmes qui sont des dispositifs de présentation de la vérité. Et quand ces systèmes deviennent des réseaux d©une envergure planétaire, cette esthétique du vrai bascule dans l©anthropologie postindustrielle. La pensée de Fred Forest a pris cette inflexion radicale au tournant des années 90. Il vient d©écrire un livre, Pour un art actuel, l©art à l©heure d©Internet, qui est à la fois une analyse évolutionniste et un manifeste d©ethnographie postin- dustrielle appliquée. Parlant du rapport art et technologie, ce livre pré- sente une analyse fort significative. Les questions que Fred Forest se pose sont celles à la fois de l©entomologiste et de l©ethnographe :"l©art qu©est-ce-que-c©est-que-quoi-donc ?","qu©est-ce qui change avec les 10 technos ?","artistes, espèce en voie de disparition ?". Ses procédés d©analyse et d©investigation du "Territoire de l©art à l©heure d©Internet" rappellent de façon frappante ceux qu©ont employé les nouvelles sciences humaines dès leur apparition durant la seconde moitié du siècle passé. On pense à Durkheim, à Mauss, à Lévy-Bruhl, à Levi-Strauss. Et dans ce nouveau livre, quand Fred analyse de façon scientifique les fonctionnements et dysfonctionnements du milieu de l©art contemporain, il va droit au but et nous démontre qu©à l©heure de l©Internet tout un pan de l©art actuel, en tant que vecteur humaniste de la communication, a ra- dicalement basculé du champ de l©esthétique dans celui de l©anthropolo- gie postindustrielle. Sa longue réflexion dans ce même ouvrage sur "Un procès pour l©exemple" illustre bien l©évolution logique de son parti pris moral. Sa philosophie de l©action axée sur le concept gratifiant de vérité n©est plus conçue en termes d©esthétique mais bien en termes d©anthropo- logie. Le glissement de terrain conceptuel chez Fred s©est produit encore une fois sans fracture, dans la fluidité évolutive des structures de la communication télématique. Art sociologique, esthétique de la commu- nication et aujourd©hui anthropologie postindustrielle, la pensée morale de Fred Forest évolue en parfait synchronisme avec l©extension plané- taire des réseaux télématiques de la culture globale : l©anthropologue et l©artiste, la main dans la main. Le grand mérite de Fred Forest ne réside pas seulement dans ce glissement du terrain conceptuel de sa pensée. Il va tout naturellement au cúur des choses et assume intégralement le néo-primitivisme de notre univers télématique. Je salue en lui, au-delà même de l©analyste lucide et du voyant inspiré, la puissance de sa conviction vitaliste. Fred Forest est le grand naïf de l©Internet et il est fier de l©être. Cette fierté, que je salue, est à mettre entièrement à son crédit d©artiste. Pierre Restany Paris, le 18 décembre 1999 11 NOTES DE L'AUTEUR Un procès de perdu, dix de retrouvés... "La Révolution est close, mais l'insurrectionisme est ouvert. Pour le moment nous concen- trons nos forces sur des surtensions "temporaires" en évitant tout dé- mêlé avec les "solutions permanentes"1. Ce livre a pour seule fin de produire de la "surtension". De la sur- tension et de mettre en quelque sorte de l'eau dans le gaz. S'il y par- vient notre objectif sera pleinement atteint. Nous pourrons alors dis- paraître de la scène. Le reste se fera tout seul. Il n'y aura plus qu'à attendre. Lecteur, ne soit pas impatient, tu vas tout apprendre ici, tout ! sur la merveilleuse histoire, digne d'un conte de fées, d'une úuvre d'art, tout à fait exceptionnelle. Une úuvre d'art contemporain. Elle a pour titre le nom évocateur, à consonance russe et romantique, de Shapolsky 1971. C'est une "installation", composée d'une série de textes et photographies et a été acquise, il y a dix ans déjà, pour un montant de... 1.271.250 FF (un million deux cent soixante et onze mille deux cent cinquante francs) à la Galerie F.L de Milan le 14 septembre 1990. Ne te laisse pas impressionner par le prix il est courant que l'État fasse des acquisitions d'un tel montant, en ma- tière d'art contemporain. Ce qui est plus intéressant d'abord pour toi, c'est que dans cette bulle que constitue l'art contemporain, tu comprennes bien comment les choses fonctionnent et dysfonc- tionnent; pour la question du prix, ensuite, ce ne sera plus qu'un jeu d'enfant... Dans Le Monde Diplomatique en octobre 1992, Felix Guattari écri- vait : "Le marché de l'art pervertit la création esthétique. Il est donc primordial qu'à côté du marché capitaliste se manifestent des mar- 1 1 . T.A.Z. Zone Autonome Temporaire, Hakim Bey, Editions de l'Eclat, Paris mai 1997. 15 chés territorialisés, s'appuyant sur des formations sociales consis- tantes affirmant leur mode de valorisation. Du chaos capitaliste doivent sortir ce que j'appellerai des "attracteurs" de valeurs, va- leurs diverses, hétérogènes, dissensuelles". Ce livre, ici, décrit et dénonce une situation de l'art qui avec le temps est appelée, compte tenu de bouleversements qui sont émi- nents, à disparaître d'elle-même. L'entrée dans le cybermonde est riche de potentialités en matière de création car les nouvelles technologies ne sont pas seulement des technologies qui s'ajoutent à celles qui ont précédées. Internet n'est pas une nouvelle technologie, mais un système intégré de partage d'idées, d'images et de ressources. En quelque sorte un écosystème informationnel composé, comme outil à générer de l'art, non plus uniquement comme l'était à titre individuel, pour le peintre, un pin- ceau, de la peinture et une toile de lin, mais composé par une multi- tude d'ordinateurs, de modems, de logiciels, de fournisseurs d'ac- cès, le tout en réseau. L'apparition du cyberespace s'impose pour les artistes comme milieu "immatériel" de création et de diffusion "fludifiant" et "multipliant" les conditions d'apparition de nouveaux modèles.

It has been clear for several centuries now that, if we want to understand the world, it is not sufficient to describe it by words. It is necessary to calculate the world. So that science has had ever more recurrence to numbers, which are images of thoughts. For instance, “2” is the ideogram for the concept “pair” or “couple”. Now, this ideographic code, which is the code of numbers, has been developed, in a very refined way, lately, by computers. Numbers are being transcoded into digital codes and digital codes are, themselves, being transcoded into synthetic images. So it is my firm belief, that if you want to have a clear and distinct communication of your concepts, you have to use synthetic images, no longer words. And this is a veritable revolution in thinking” (Flusser 2010: 36)1 The invention of the photograph is a pivotal moment in Vilém Flusser's history of humanity. What is so special, so transformative about the discovery of photography? With Flusser, it is often helpful to tap back into etymology and look again at the words ‘photos’ (φωτός: light) and ‘graphein’ (γράφειν: writing). For Flusser, the photograph is a technical or synthetic image, an image that is programmed and projected from the scientific knowledge, which generated the chemical processes and materials where the image appears.

Un enseignement destiné à restaurer ce qu’on peut appeler : la qualité de vie et une écologie de l'esprit ! Et, au-delà de la qualité de vie, un enseigne- ment visant à redonner, à chacun et à tous, le sens de l’harmonie et de valeurs esthétiques authentiquement vécues. Ce projet suppose de « repenser » profondément l’enseignement de l’art, de réaména- ger la nature de ses contenus, et surtout de lui donner une mission qui lui attribue un rôle déterminant dans la construction de la société à venir. Une société qui, compte tenu des évolutions des mentalités et des niveaux de vie, aspirera, de plus en plus, à privilégier les ver- tus du sens et la qualité de vie, sur la consommation. Il importe, en priorité, que l’école d’art se prémunisse contre toutes les formes d’académismes, que ce soient celles du passé comme celles du pré- sent. Ces dernières, plus pernicieuses encore, car elles se présentent avec toutes les séductions du moment, parées du label « tendance ». Un label devenu irrésistible en matière de suivisme grégaire. Les productions des étudiants des écoles d’art, pour leur grande majorité font preuve d’une désolante répétition de formes et d’un confor- misme consternant.

    Oui a la Biennale de São Paulo: Vilém Flusser’s Anti-Boycott1 Vinicius Pontes Spricigo This text is an edited version of a paper presented at the conference ‘Zones de convergence: l’actualité de la recherche en théorie et histoire de l’ art latino-américain’ at the University Rennes 2 on the 7th of March 2012. To Biennial or not to Biennial? This was the question asked by Solveig Øvstebø, Marieke van Hal and Elena Filipovic, the organisers of the Bergen Biennial Conference, in 2009.2 The question referred both to the plans of the city of Bergen to create a periodic exhibition and to the debate about the process of ‘biennialization’ of the contemporary art world. Forty years earlier, the same issue –‘to biennial or not to biennial’– was the title of an article on the boycott of the 10th Bienal de São Paulo published in an Argentine magazine.3 This coincidence of titles points out that, since its creation in 1951, the frame of reference underpinning the Bienal de São Paulo sought to question the opposition between centre and periphery. In so doing, it anticipated a political agenda that only emerged in the international art scene in the nineties with the proliferation of new biennials and postcolonial discourse. However, given the fact that most of the critical literature consulted in this field consists primarily of texts written in English, the biennial discourse tends to be rooted in an Anglo-Saxon theoretical framework. Shanken A legend of interactivity Cynthia Mailman fell through the roof of a garage on which she was dancing as a participant in Al Hansen’s “Hall Street Happening” (1963). Bleeding and hurt, she screamed for help but initially no one came to her rescue; participants and viewers alike presumed her action was part of the happening and ignored her pleas for assistance. Writing about the event several years later, Hansen (1965: 17) remarked, I ran out into the warm midnight-Brooklyn slum street and looked up and down each way—my first impulse was to hitchhike to Mexico and forget the whole thing. Then an ambulance and the police arrived…It was a fine bit of mayhem and quite abstract. (Hansen 1965: 17) For better or worse, only a few happenings resembled Hansen’s “Hall Street Happening” in its obliteration of the tangible, objective difference between aesthetic and ordinary events, artist and spectator. This slippage is one reason why Allan Kaprow abandoned happenings less than a decade after theorizing them in the mid-1950s. Even though the aims he outlined for happenings included keeping “the line between art and life…as fluid, and perhaps indistinct, as possible,” and “eliminat[ing] audiences entirely,” Kaprow found that audiences were culturally unprepared to interact responsibly in constructing a work of art (Kaprow 1965, reprinted in Stiles & Selz 1996, pp. 709, 713; Kaprow 1966). While little has changed in the public’s capacity to interact in art or life, fostering audience agency remains a utopian activist goal for many artists and is presented as an ineluctable formal quality of digital multimedia.

    Contemporary Art as “Immatériaux”: Yesterday and Today Francesca Gallo In­1985­as­today,­the­historical­and­critical­interest­of­Les Immatériaux lies,­in­ my­opinion,­in­the­way­it­opposed­the­trend­towards­the­triumph­of­traditional­ values­that­marked­the­1980s.­This­was­a­decade­in­which,­in­both­the­political­ and­cultural­arenas,­the­Western­world­witnessed­the­gradual­advance­and­ dominance­of­conservative­positions,­with­the­great­success­of­a­return­to­ the­various­forms­of­painting:­Transavanguardia,­Neue­Wilde,­New­Expres- sionism,­and­so­on.­Les Immatériaux­should­be­understood­as­a­kind­of­“Man- ifesto­of­Technophilic­Postmodernism”,­of­which­Jean-François­Lyotard­was­an­ interpreter.­ While­Lyotard­left­his­stamp­on­Les Immatériaux­especially­through­the­work­ he­did­on­the­exhibition­as­a­medium­–­the­organization­and­display,­the­ soundtrack,­the­catalogue,­etc.,­are­the­very­areas­in­which­one­can­sense­ the­hand­of­the­philosopher1­–,­for­the­selection­of­the­works,­Lyotard­often­ relied­on­specialists­(such­as­Alain­Sayag­for­the­photography,­or­Bernard­ Blistène­for­fine­arts).­Indeed,­after­studying­the­documents­in­the­archives­ of­the­Centre­Pompidou,2­one­can­understand­that­the­collaboration­with­the­ National­Museum­of­Modern­Art­(the­art­department­of­the­Centre­Pompidou,­ 1­ Cf.­Rosalind­Krauss,­“Le­musée­sans­mur­du­postmodernisme”,­Cahiers du MNAM,­no.­ 17–18­(1986):­152–158;­Reesa­Greenberg,­Bruce­W.­Ferguson,­Sandy­Nairne­(eds),­Thinking about Exhibition (London­&­New­York:­Routledge,­1996); Jean­Davallon,­L’exposition à l’oeuvre (Harmattan:­Paris,­2000). 2­ I­dedicated­my­PhD­to­Les Immatériaux­and­Lyotard’s­interest­in­contemporary­art.­See­ Francesca­Gallo,­Les Immatériaux.
