The Chemical Brothers and Duran Duran for Northside 2016-01-27 12:39 CET The Chemical Brothers and Duran Duran for NorthSide The electronic brothers and the pop legends in Duran Duran are added to the line-up alongsinde the electronica wizard Jamie xx and audience favourite Damien Rice When you’re thanked on the debut albums of both Daft Punk and Fatboy Slim, you know you’ve made a splash on the electronic music scene. Hits like ”Setting Sun”, ”Block Rockin’ Beats”, ”Go”, ”Hey Boy Hey Girl”, ”Galvanize”, and ”Let Forever Be” then secured The Chemical Brothers enormous mainstream success, and their inventive and wildly intense shows always guarantee a massive party. It’s been eight years since the brothers last worked it out in Denmark, so it’s a long awaited return from the duo, who last year released the critically acclaimed album ”Born in the Echoes”. The Chemical Brothers will perform Friday during NorthSide 2016 Duran Duran have sold over 100 million records, have been honoured with seven prestigious Lifetime Achievement Awards, alongside countless other accolades, and for the last three decades have continued to perform for screaming fans all over the world. Duran Duran’s confirmation as headliner for NorthSide this summer is much anticipated, as their last visit to Denmark was in 2008, where they played concerts in both Odense and in KB Hallen. Duran Duran will perform Sunday at NorthSide 2016 - We have had incredible success with late night electronic parties with acts like Justice and Underworld, so the expectations for the show from The Chemical Brothers are quite frankly extremely high. But I also feel very confident in saying that we’re in for a party, when Duran Duran hit the stage Sunday night. They have such a ridiculous amount of hits that it’s bound to be a great party, says spokesperson for NorthSide, John Fogde. Also added in musician and producer Jamie xx, who has recently had hits with ”I Know There’s Gonna Be (Good Times)” and ”Loud Places” from the Grammy and Mercury Prize nominated album ”In Colour”. His mix of atmospheric electronica and hard hitting bangers will close out Saturday night at NorthSide, and the following day will see the return of the fabulous Irish songwriter Damien Rice, who is finally back with a new album. The line-up for NorthSide 2016 is now as follows: Beach House, Beck, Bernhoft, Bloc Party, C Duncan, Caribou, Damien Rice, Deftones, Duran Duran, Iggy Pop, Jamie xx, Lukas Graham, Malk de Koijn, Sigur Rós, The Chemical Brothers, The Minds of 99, Ukendt Kunstner, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Velvet Volume, Wilco, Yeasayer, and Yelawolf. NorthSide 2016 can be experienced in Aarhus, Denmark on the 17th – 19th of June and tickets are available through NorthSide.dk. NorthSide 2021 afvikles i Eskelunden ved Aarhus. The Chemical Brothers: Elektrobank (Spike Jonze 1997) and Star Guitar (Michel Gondry 2001) Once you feel you’ve got the trust in the director, then it’s their thing and they make the video. (The Chemical Brothers – Tom Rowlands and Ed Simons) For some types of music, particularly electronic dance, there is almost a sub-genre of videos in which the artist either does not appear at all or merely makes a token cameo appearance. Specialists in this are the directors Spike Jonze and Michel Gondry who have both taken music promos in new directions, effectively finding a mass audience for experimental filmmaking. Though both directors have made plenty of videos featuring the artist as central performer, their willingness to push the boundaries of the conventions of music video has led to some interesting work. In Electrobank, Jonze used the idea of the Svengali coach training a young gymnast, based on his reading about Soviet coaches of young girls preparing for the Olympic Games. His (then) girlfriend, Sofia Coppola, appeared as the main character – a high school competitor – and had to learn gymnastics, dance and ribbonwork for the part. Jonze created a back-story for her and the other characters, where she chooses this music for her routine (counterpointed by the classical music which plays as she arrives in the hall). This short film represents a melodrama in which the young gymnast battles against a leg injury with the encouragement of both her coach and her family to narrowly win at the end. It is a simple story, told visually, mainly through exchanges of looks between characters and through the routine she performs, but what makes it memorable is the context – this is a music video.

Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres by Vivian Le A THESIS submitted to Oregon State University Honors College in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Accounting and Business Information Systems (Honors Scholar) Presented May 29, 2020 Commencement June 2020 AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Vivian Le for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Accounting and Business Information Systems presented on May 29, 2020. Title: Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres. Abstract approved:_____________________________________________________ Ryann Reynolds-McIlnay The rise of digital streaming has largely impacted the way the average listener consumes music. Consequentially, while the role of album art has evolved to meet the changes in music technology, it is hard to measure the effect of digital streaming on modern album art. This research seeks to determine whether or not graphic design still plays a role in marketing information about the music, such as its genre, to the consumer. It does so through two studies: 1. A computer visual analysis that measures color dominance of an image, and 2. A mixed-design lab experiment with volunteer participants who attempt to assess the genre of a given album. Findings from the first study show that color scheme models created from album samples cannot be used to predict the genre of an album. Further findings from the second theory show that consumers pay a significant amount of attention to album covers, enough to be able to correctly assess the genre of an album most of the time.

DOI: 10.2478/v10319-012-0002-2 A BLEND OF SOUND AND IMAGE- THE MUSIC VIDEO ELIZA CLAUDIA FILIMON University of Timişoara Email: [email protected] Abstract: The focus of this paper is first of all the issue of authorship in music videos, with reference to the division of tasks between the musician and the director. Secondly, a non-narrative musical piece in analysed - The Chemical Brothers’ Star Guitar - in relation to the narrative video created by Michel Gondry to enrich its meanings and better convey the intended message of the musicians. Keywords: authorship, musical message, video message 1. Introduction Literary critical studies have constantly been holding authorship theories under scrutiny, from voices hailing the paramount role an author has to theoretical studies committing the author to invisibility. Roland Barthes boldly denounced the limiting status of the author in the interpretation of a text, stating the necessity of abandoning the creative voice entirely: “The birth of the reader must be at the cost of the death of the Author” (qtd. in Caughie 1981:213). Michael Foucault distinguished himself from Barthes by tackling the problem from another angle. By separating the indicative and designative functions of the author’s name, he investigated the discourses surrounding and attached to the author’s name. Extending his theories of discourses from The Order of Things and The Archaeology of Knowledge, Foucault considered author as a product of discursive practices, instead of a creative subject. “In undertaking an internal and architectonic analysis of a work and in delimiting psychological and biographical references, suspicions arise concerning the absolute nature and creative role of the subject.” (qtd.

Adventures in Film Music Redux - Composer Profiles ADVENTURES IN FILM MUSIC REDUX COMPOSER PROFILES A. R. RAHMAN Elizabeth: The Golden Age A.R. Rahman, in full Allah Rakha Rahman, original name A.S. Dileep Kumar, (born January 6, 1966, Madras [now Chennai], India), Indian composer whose extensive body of work for film and stage earned him the nickname “the Mozart of Madras.” Rahman continued his work for the screen, scoring films for Bollywood and, increasingly, Hollywood. He contributed a song to the soundtrack of Spike Lee’s Inside Man (2006) and co- wrote the score for Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007). However, his true breakthrough to Western audiences came with Danny Boyle’s rags-to-riches saga Slumdog Millionaire (2008). Rahman’s score, which captured the frenzied pace of life in Mumbai’s underclass, dominated the awards circuit in 2009. He collected a British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Award for best music as well as a Golden Globe and an Academy Award for best score. He also won the Academy Award for best song for “Jai Ho,” a Latin-infused dance track that accompanied the film’s closing Bollywood-style dance number. Rahman’s streak continued at the Grammy Awards in 2010, where he collected the prize for best soundtrack and “Jai Ho” was again honoured as best song appearing on a soundtrack. Rahman’s later notable scores included those for the films 127 Hours (2010)—for which he received another Academy Award nomination—and the Hindi-language movies Rockstar (2011), Raanjhanaa (2013), Highway (2014), and Beyond the Clouds (2017).
