Topics covered identifying research topics in technical services; finding time to write; choosing topics; finding and Christina Bellinger, University of using the right style for a topic; the essentials of copyright for New Hampshire authors; and the benefits of writing and publishing. Research Libraries As LRTS begins volume 50, I am going to give potential authors some Sara C. Heitshu, University of advice. Powell and Lynn Silipigni College Connaway (Westport, Conn., Libraries Unlimited, 2004). Carolynne Myall, Eastern Several books address writing well. Some are basic primers, others focus on Washington University specific aspects of good prose. A few of my favorites are Under the Grammar Linda L. Ex-Officio Members Because librarianship is an applied profession, much of what we publish arises from the work of librarians and the problems they encounter and solve.     JOHN NEWBERY AWARD COMMITTEE MANUAL October 2009 John Newbery Award Committee Manual – Formatted August 2015 1 FOREWORD John Newbery The Newbery Medal is named for John Newbery (1713-1767), known as the first publisher of books for children. The son of a farmer, he married a widow who owned a printing business in Reading, England. They moved to London and, in 1743, Newbery published “A Little Pretty Pocket-Book, intended for the Instruction and Amusement of Little Master Tommy and Pretty Miss Polly, with an agreeable Letter to read from Jack the Giant-Killer, as also a Ball and a Pincushion, the use of which will infallibly make Tommy a good Boy and Polly a good Girl.” Although this was not the first book published for children (A Play-Book for Children was published by “J.G.” as early as 1694), Newbery was the first person to take children’s book publishing seriously, and many of his methods were copied by other authors and publishers. Newbery was an admirer of John Locke, who advocated teaching children through “some easy pleasant book, suited to his capacity.” Newbery’s books invariably had their didactic side, but he tempered instruction with a sense of humor. Works like Goody Two-Shoes, in which a poor but virtuous young woman is rewarded with riches, satisfied the moralists while providing a story with all the ups and downs of a modern soap opera. Other books on Newbery’s list included Aesop’s Fables, books of history and science, miscellanies, and even a children’s magazine, The Lilliputian Magazine, which contained stories, riddles, and songs.

    Observations on Scholarly Engagement in the 2008 Cataloging Hidden Special Collections and Archives Program Council on Library and Information Resources March 2010 Introduction As defined by CLIR, the “Cataloging Hidden Special Collections and Archives” program aims to identify and catalog hidden special collections and archives of “potentially substantive intellectual value that are unknown and inaccessible to scholars.” By providing resources for cataloging key hidden collections and by facilitating the linking of online records, the program also aims “to construct a new research and teaching environment of national importance.” Inherent in the program’s design is a conviction that its success will depend on the ability of the library and archival communities not only to participate actively in the creation of this new environment by processing and cataloging hidden collections, but also by forging new connections with scholars. In a sense, the program is attempting to answer the call of scholars, such as Anthony Grafton, who have written of the pressing need “to bring librarians and scholars, planners and users together…to fashion what we now need … libraries that can regain their place as craft ateliers of scholarship….”1 The “Cataloging Hidden Special Collections and Archives” program is aiming ambitiously to help design, populate, and build these new “ateliers of scholarship,” hybrid physical and digital spaces requiring recalibrations of relationships between librarians, archivists, and scholars.     Arrangement and Maintenance of Library Material MODULE - 3 ORGANISATION OF INFORMATION SOURCES 11 Notes ARRANGEMENT AND MAINTENANCE OF LIBRARY MATERIAL 11.1 INTRODUCTION In this lesson, we will discuss the issues related to organization and maintenance of library material. You will be told how materials have to be arranged on library shelves and how the arrangement of books differs from the arrangement of periodicals. The library material needs to be maintained on routine basis. Maintenance of library material involves kinds of stacking, shelf arrangement, cleaning, shelving, stock verification and weeding of unwanted material.
