KEIKALLA MARKO PUKKILA Kotisivut Artistisivut facebookissa Marko Pukkila on nykyisin Tampereella asuva Pietarsaarelaislähtöinen basisti, jonka soittoura alkoi paikallisessa Blindside -yhtyeessä 1990-luvun alussa. Varsinainen nousu Markon uralla alkoi kuitenkin kymmenisen vuotta myöhemmin kun hän pitkäaikaisen soittajakaverinsa Tony Smedjebackan kanssa perusti Altaria yhtyeen. Tätä kirjoitettaessa on myös Altarian aika ollut ohi jo muutaman vuoden ja tätä nykyä Marko miehittää basistin tontin yhtyeissä Stargazery ja Shadow Tribe. Marko on ollut mukana Euroopan rockscenessä yli 20 vuoden ajan ja keikkaillut eri kokoonpanojen kanssa niin USA:ssa kuin Euroopassakin. Takana on maailmanlaajuisesti julkaistuja levyjä niin omien bändien kanssa, kuin vierailuja muiden kuuluisuuksien levyillä. Hän on soittanut esim. Palatkaamme kuitenkin lähtöruutuun, Pietarsaareen ja arviolta vuoteen 1991, kun yhtye Blindside aloitti toimintansa. BLINDSIDE – 1991 (Pietarsaari) Bändi perustettiin Pietarsaaressa 1980-luvun lopulla nimellä Dreamhunter. 1990-luvun alkumetreillä yhtyeen nimi muutettiin Blindsideksi, jolloin myös Marko liittyi bändiin. Yhtyeessä soittivat silloin Petri Aho – kitara, Patrik Dahl – koskettimet, Marko Pukkila – basso, Tony Smedjebacka – rummut ja Michel Wiik – kitara ja laulu. Oheinen kuva on paikallislehdessä 6.7.1994 julkaistun artikkelin yhteydessä, jossa kerrotaan tämän jo kolme vuotta vaikuttaneen bändin aloittavan keikkailun Pohjanmaan alueella seuraavan kuukauden aikana. Bändin kiertue ulottuu viiteen eri paikkaan alueellamme ja sen ensimmäinen keikka on Kokkolassa Player’s Inn –nimisessä paikassa la 9.7.1994. Lisäksi samainen artikkeli kertoo bändin tyylisuunnan olevan pääasiassa melodista rokkia, joskin muistakin tyylisuunnista löytyy vaikutteita. Huomioitavaa on lisäksi, että tällä kiertueella esitettävät kappaleet ovat enimmäkseen bändin omaa tuotantoa. ©www.keikalla.net KEIKALLA ALTARIA - 2000 (Pietarsaari) Tämä melodista heviä soittava yhtye näki päivänvalon Pietarsaaressa vuonna 2000, kun paikallisen Blindside yhtyeen Marko Pukkila ja Tony Smedjebacka alkoivat tapailla uusia uria omille musiikillisille poluilleen. Blindsidea ei kuitenkaan lakkautettu mutta sen toiminta hiipui hiljalleen jäädäkseen ns. telakalle. Vielä vuonna 2001 Blindside nousi stagelle 10- vuotista taivaltaan juhlistamaan. Uuden bändin nimeksi tuli Altaria ja siihen liittyivät vähitellen myös Jani Liimatainen (kitara) ja Johan Mattjus (laulu). Bändi julkaisi ensimmäisen demonsa Sleeping Visions (EP) vuonna 2001. Demoa levitettiin ympäri maailmaa isolla kädellä ja sitä kautta saatiin tunnettuutta oikeissa piireissä. Pian tämän jälkeen bändin laulaja vaihtui, mikä johti siihen, että tehtiin uusi demo. Feed the Fire (EP) julkaistiin vuonna 2002, jota jälleen jaettiin ruhtinaallisesti maailmalle. Tämä EP herätti sen verran kiinnostusta, että loppujen lopuksi sen pohjalta saatiin tehtyä bändin ensimmäinen levytyssopimus saksalaisen Metal Heavenin kanssa. Mainittakoon vielä tuon laulajan vaihtumiseen liittyvistä seikoista sen verran, että siihen ei liity mitään dramatiikkaa vaan Johanilla ei siihen aikaan ollut mahdollisuutta satsata bändiin 100%:sti. Tästä johtuen oli ensi alkuun valmiiksi buukatuille keikoille hankittava tuuraaja, joka löytyi Kokkolasta. Jouni Nikulasta oli kuultu Pietarsaaressa ja niin tätä tuurausmahdollisuutta puitiin yhdessä myös Johanin kanssa. Jouni joutui asettumaan vokalistin tontille, ellei aivan pystymetsästä, niin kuitenkin hyvin lyhyellä varoitusajalla ja oli täystyöllistetty heti alusta alkaen. Hänen oli nimittäin opeteltava koko bändin ohjelmisto 10 päivässä ennen ensimmäistä keikkaa. Bändin ohjelmistossa oli hänelle monta täysin uutta biisiä opeteltavaksi, jotka antoivat riittävästi haastetta ensimmäiselle puolentoista viikon jaksolle tässä jengissä. Kaikki meni kuitenkin niin sanotusti putkeen ja Jounin pesti sai vielä jatkoa, kun Johan ilmoitti, ettei hänen aikansa todellakaan riitä bändin kiihtyvään toimintaan. ©www.keikalla.net KEIKALLA Altaria 2002. Jouni Nikula, Tony Smedjebacka, Jani Liimatainen ja Marko Pukkila. Altariaa saattoi hyvällä syyllä kutsua superbändiksi sillä siihen kuului alusta alkaen muiden huippubändien soittajia (Jani Liimatainen, Emppu Vuorinen). Tämä asetti omat vaatimuksensa bändin toiminnalle, koska näiden soittajien ns. ykkösbändien (Sonata Arctica, Nightwish) tarpeet olivat etusijalla. Marko painottaa kuitenkin että Altaria oli tästä huolimatta aivan tavallinen bändi ja pystyi toimimaan vallan hyvin silloin, kun Sonata ja Nightwish olivat tauolla. Muun ajan kaverukset Marko ja Tony hyödynsivät rustaamalla Altarialle uusia biisejä. Menettely oli sellainen, että pojat tekivät pohjat, nauhoittivat biisit ja lähettivät ne muille, joten kaikki pystyivät omissa oloissaan treenamaan oman osuutensa. Varsinaisen kiertueen alla bändi vietti muutaman viikon intensiivisemmän jakson yhdessä, jossa kappaleet saatiin hiottua. Bändi lähti keikalle vasta sitten, kun kaikki sen jäsenet pääsivät matkaan. Tähän paikkaan en malta olla lisäämättä otetta SOUNDI’n vuonna 2003 julkaisemasta artikkelista. Tässä on hyvin nasevasti kirjoitettu määritelmä tästä bändistä ja niin tyhjentävästi sanottu, että jo pelkän tekstin lukeminen nostaa vannoutuneen musadiggarin tekemään kunniaa bändille kuin alokkaan konsanaan: - ”Marko Pukkilan ja Tony Smedjebackan ideoimassa Altariassa on ollut jo raakileena potentiaalia, sillä yksi toisensa perään lipuivat mukaan Jouni Nikula (Requiem), Jani Liimatainen (Sonata Arctica) ja Emppu Vuorinen (Nightwish). Tämän tason soittajat eivät lähde mukaan mihin tahansa perunakellarihevistelyyn”. ©www.keikalla.net KEIKALLA Altaria julkaisi ensimmäisen pitkäsoiton nimeltä Invitation vuonna 2003, jolta poimin biisin Unicorn, josta myös Imperiumi piti erityisesti. Mainittakoon, että jo edeltävänä vuonna bändi oli merkittävällä tavalla esillä. Pojat kävivät nimittäin äänittämässä Cacophonyn kappaleen Stranger, joka julkaistiin Jason Beckerille omistetulla tribuuttialbumilla Warmth In The Wilderness Vol II. Altaria 2003. Marko Pukkila, Jani Liimatainen, Jouni Nikula, Tony Smedjebacka ja Emppu Vuorinen. Kokoonpanoon tuli uusia muutoksia vokalistiosastolle heti pian levyn julkaisun jälkeen ennen kuin bändi ehti aloittaa levyn nimeä kantavan Invitation -kiertueen. Jounin pesti oli luonteeltaan alun perin tuuraus ja tässä vaiheessa hän jättäytyi pois. Osasyynä puntarissa painoi paljolti varmaan se, että hän oli ollut Haapajärvi-Kokkola-akselilta vaikuttaneen Requiemin solisti jo vuodesta 2000. Jounin jättäydyttyä pois otti bändi hetimmiten yhteyttä Kilpi -yhtyeen solistiin Taage Laihoon, joka lähes välittömästi liittyi bändin vahvuuteen. Orkesteri teki vielä syksyn 2003 aikana muutaman livekeikan, jotka saivat hyvän vastaanoton. Tammikuussa 2004 oli myös Empun jättäydyttävä pois tältä kiertueelta sillä Nightwishin työskentelyt vaativat tässä vaiheessa hänen täyden panostuksensa. Bändi jatkoi nelimiehisenä joskin Markon aikaisempi tuttavuus, Petri Aho Blindside -ajoilta tuli mukaan live keikoille toiseksi kitaristiksi. Bändin toinen albumi Divinity julkaistiin ©www.keikalla.net KEIKALLA toukokuussa 2004 ja sen saama vastaanotto ei olisi voinut olla parempi. Sekä lehdistö, fanit että itse bändi olivat erittäin tyytyväisiä tähän albumiin heti ensi kuulemalta eikä Imperiumi löytänyt moitteen sijaa levystä vaan kehui levyn toimivan aina vain paremmin mitä enemmän kuuntelukertoja sille uhrasi. Jopa seuraavan albumin levytyssopimus allekirjoitettiin tämän jälkeen vaikka nuottiakaan ei uudesta materiaalista ollut esittää. Tällä albumilla allekirjoittaneen ihokarvamittari reagoi erityisesti kappaleelle Prophet Of Pestilence. Altaria 2004. Tony Smedjebacka, Marko Pukkila, Taage Laiho ja Jani Liimatainen. ©www.keikalla.net KEIKALLA Vuoden 2005 kevättalven aikana aloitti yhtye kolmannen albuminsa esivalmistelut. Kesäkuussa pakottivat Sonata Arctican kiireet kuitenkin Janin jättämään tonttinsa, mutta jo heinäkuussa bändi tiedotti uuden kitaristin, J-P Alasen (Celesty) liittyneen joukkoon. J-P toi uutta tuoreutta ja lisäpotkua levyntekoon sekä antoi mahdollisuuden jatkaa vielä rankempien livesessioiden toteuttamisen mitä tähän asti oli toteutettu. Albumi The Fallen Empire julkaistiin keväällä 2006, joka jälleen kerran sai monen uskollisen kuulijan kielenkannat runolliselle laukalle. Imperiumi lausui myös tyytyväisyytensä levyarvostelussaan ja asetti valokiilaan erityisesti Taage Laihon englanninkieliset tulkinnat. Vanhan hämyn kotikutoinen hittimittari asetettiin jälleen kerran lujille. Ensi kuulemalta monovastaanottimen viisari värähti tappiin kappaleelle Valley Of Rainbows. Seuraavalla kuuntelukerralla se voi yhtä hyvin värähtää voimakkaimmin esimerkiksi kappaleille Frozen Hearts, Chosen One tai miksipä ei myös vain Euroopan julkaisussa mukana olevalle upealle The Dying Flame -kappaleelle. Silloin he esiintyivät ympäri Eurooppaa yhdessä muiden huippubändien kanssa. Kiertue "TOURING THE FALLEN EMPIRES" tehtiin saksalaisen Doron ja Sonata Arctican kanssa. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

    Concert Reports from the HellNoise Archiv AMOK VEDAR, MORBID MIND, CDB, DUST DEVILS 28. Februar 2003 Berlin, Garage Pankow Nach langer Fahrt mit den öffentlichen Verkehrsmitteln, traf ich gegen 21.15 Uhr endlich in der Garage Pankow ein. Erstmal hieß es Blase leeren, und dabei wurde man auch schon schön mit der passenden Musik beschallt. Von draußen klang es ein wenig wie Black Metal, umso erstaunter war ich als ich die Band erblickte und die 3 Symphoniker so gar nicht wie ne BM-Band aussahen. Als erstes (oder besser gesagt die ersten 3 Lieder die ich mitbekommen habe) dachte ich es wäre noch Soundcheck, denn irgendwie sah es auf der Bühne doch sehr entspannt aus. Der Sänger hockte ab und zu mal auf dem Boden, dann trank er mal wieder nen Schluck, dann hat die Band untereinander nen bißchen gequatscht. Irgendwann merkte ich aber das es schon der Auftritt ist und lauschte mal nen bißchen aufmerksamer. Meine Verwirrung wurde von Lied zu Lied immer größer, denn bei den Dust Devils fand wirklich jede Stilistik ihren Platz. Was eben noch, vom Drumming her, wie alte Darkthrone klang, uferte nur Sekunden später in Grindcoregebolze aus. Der Sänger hatte ne schöne abgrundtiefe Death Metal Stimme bei der sollte er aber auch bleiben, denn diese zwischenzeitliche Rumgequieke klang nun wirklich schon sehr lächerlich (ich war noch nie nen Freund von Grindcore). For many artists and fans, folk metal is more than just music: it is a way of revitalising tradition. Folk metal is then a genre which is closely related to individual‟s cultural identities. As part of popular culture, heavy metal has been investigated for instance in the fields of cultural studies and psychology. Andrew Brown investigates how heavy metal emerged as subject for academic research. Deena Weinstein approaches heavy metal as culture and behaviour that is shared by individuals from different cultural backgrounds. However, subgenres like folk metal have not yet been explored in depth by academics. Analysing folk metal‟s nuances in specific national contexts would provide further knowledge on national cultures and identities. One example of folk metal reflecting elements of national culture is Finnish folk metal. The bands whose works belong to this genre usually draw from Finnish culture to compose their works, which usually feature stories from a variety of traditional sources such as the epic book Kalevala. Such stories are then transposed into new media, disseminating the artists‟ concept of Finnishness.

I examine three significant roles – musicians, audiences, and mediators, and focus on the interaction between the localized Chinese metal scene and metal globalization. This thesis project uses multiple methods, including textual analysis, observation, surveys, and in-depth interviews. In this thesis, I illustrate an image of the Chinese metal scene, present the characteristics and the development of metal musicians, fans, and mediators in China, discuss their contributions to scene’s construction, and analyze various internal and external factors that influence the localization of metal in China. After that, I argue that the development and the localization of the metal scene in China goes through three stages, the emerging stage (1988-1996), the underground stage (1997-2005), the indie stage (2006-present), with Chinese characteristics.
