Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

Sul campetto aleggeranno gli spiriti di Jimi Hendrix, John Lennon e dei Thin Lizzy. La prima serata, “Let's celebrate John Lennon and Jimi Hendrix“ prevede un doveroso omaggio a John Lennon (a 41 anni dalla morte, a Jimi Hendrix (che ci ha lasciati 51 anni fa). Gli Instant Karma sono la prima John Lennon Tribute Band in Svizzera, nata a Lugano e attiva da tempo non solo in Ticino, ma anche nel resto della Svizzera e nella vicina penisola. Spesso si pensa a John Lennon come leader dei Beatles o come autore di grandi pezzi ormai ritenuti dei classici, come Imagine, Woman o Jealous Guy. L’intendo della band è invece quello di riproporre ad un vasto pubblico il repertorio di un artista poliedrico, che spazia attraverso vari generi e decenni. Così gli Instant Karma partono dai brani del Lennon solista, passando attraverso pezzi degli ultimi Beatles, energici e graffianti come Come together, per poi rendere omaggio al Rock’n’Roll degli anni 50, una delle grandi passioni di Lennon.

Februar 2003 Berlin, Garage Pankow Nach langer Fahrt mit den öffentlichen Verkehrsmitteln, traf ich gegen 21.15 Uhr endlich in der Garage Pankow ein. Erstmal hieß es Blase leeren, und dabei wurde man auch schon schön mit der passenden Musik beschallt. Von draußen klang es ein wenig wie Black Metal, umso erstaunter war ich als ich die Band erblickte und die 3 Symphoniker so gar nicht wie ne BM-Band aussahen. Als erstes (oder besser gesagt die ersten 3 Lieder die ich mitbekommen habe) dachte ich es wäre noch Soundcheck, denn irgendwie sah es auf der Bühne doch sehr entspannt aus. Der Sänger hockte ab und zu mal auf dem Boden, dann trank er mal wieder nen Schluck, dann hat die Band untereinander nen bißchen gequatscht. Irgendwann merkte ich aber das es schon der Auftritt ist und lauschte mal nen bißchen aufmerksamer. Meine Verwirrung wurde von Lied zu Lied immer größer, denn bei den Dust Devils fand wirklich jede Stilistik ihren Platz. Was eben noch, vom Drumming her, wie alte Darkthrone klang, uferte nur Sekunden später in Grindcoregebolze aus. Der Sänger hatte ne schöne abgrundtiefe Death Metal Stimme bei der sollte er aber auch bleiben, denn diese zwischenzeitliche Rumgequieke klang nun wirklich schon sehr lächerlich (ich war noch nie nen Freund von Grindcore). Irgendwann hatte die Band keine Lust mehr, was ganz natürlich ist, denn hätten die Dust Devils Applaus hören wollen hätten sie sich selbst beklatschen müssen.     MEDIA INFORMATION NO HAMBURG, NO BEATLES: THE HISTORY OF THE FAB FOUR IN HAMBURG From the evolution of the Hamburg Sound to today’s club scene On 17 August 1960, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Stuart Sutcliffe and Pete Best played their first gig at the Indra Club in the legendary St Pauli district of Hamburg. Mark Lewisohn, the acclaimed Beatles author, aptly commented “No Hamburg, no Beatles”. The Beatles, some of whom were still minors in the beginning, spent two years in Hamburg, with only a few breaks in between. Here, they laid the foundations for their global career. Following their debut in 1960, the Beatles played in Hamburg more often than anywhere else in the world – with 300 concerts, five contracts with four different music clubs, and about 1,200 hours spent on Hamburg stages. John Lennon once said “I grew up in Liverpool but I came of age in Hamburg”, and this is arguably the story of the Beatles in Hamburg in a nutshell. It all began with a shock. When The Beatles got their first engagement in Hamburg on the 17th of August 1960, they where full of anticipation. The Hanseatic City was considered to be the perfect place to make good money by giging. And the Reeperbahn was the incarnation of adventure for those naive from Liverpool. Where nowadays countless cutting-edge music clubs line the neon bright streets, back in the day, the audience craved for all night entertainment – especially for exciting music, such as Rock‘n‘Roll and it‘s British exports.
