On the Use of Coptic Numerals in Egypt in the 16 Th Century
ON THE USE OF COPTIC NUMERALS IN EGYPT IN THE 16 TH CENTURY Mutsuo KAWATOKO* I. Introduction According to the researches, it is assumed that the culture of the early Islamic period in Egypt was very similar to the contemporary Coptic (Qibti)/ Byzantine (Rumi) culture. This is most evident in their language, especially in writing. It was mainly Greek and Coptic which adopted the letters deriving from Greek and Demotic. Thus, it was normal in those days for the official documents to be written in Greek, and, the others written in Coptic.(1) Gold, silver and copper coins were also minted imitating Byzantine Solidus (gold coin) and Follis (copper coin) and Sassanian Drahm (silver coin), and they were sometimes decorated with the representation of the religious legends, such as "Allahu", engraved in a blank space. In spite of such situation, around A. H. 79 (698), Caliph 'Abd al-Malik b. Marwan implemented the coinage reformation to promote Arabisation of coins, and in A. H. 87 (706), 'Abd Allahi b. 'Abd al-Malik, the governor- general of Egypt, pursued Arabisation of official documentation under a decree by Caliph Walid b. 'Abd al-Malik.(2) As a result, the Arabic letters came into the immediate use for the coin inscriptions and gradually for the official documents. However, when the figures were involved, the Greek or the Coptic numerals were used together with the Arabic letters.(3) The Abjad Arabic numerals were also created by assigning the numerical values to the Arabic alphabetic (abjad) letters just like the Greek numerals, but they did not spread very much.(4) It was in the latter half of the 8th century that the Indian numerals, generally regarded as the forerunners of the Arabic numerals, were introduced to the Islamic world. -

Wacks 1 Mediterranean Networks: Literature of the Sephardic Mediterranean David Wacks Professor of Spanish University of Oregon NEH Summer Institute for College Instructors Thresholds of Change: Modernity and Transformation in the Mediterranean 1400-1700 Email: [email protected] Twitter: @davidwacks Web: davidwacks.uoregon.edu Mediterranean Studies At this point in the Institute you all have a pretty good idea of what Mediterranean studies is all about, but today I’d like to zoom in on one particular corner of the field at the intersection of literary studies and Iberian/Sephardic studies. I am going to speak about Sephardic literature as a Mediterranean cultural phenomenon, and in particular as a network of cultural production. I am coming at the question of the Mediterranean from Hispanic Studies, and to a lesser extent, as I will explain, from Jewish studies, but primarily as a scholar of language and literature, and in particular as a scholar employed in a department of Romance Languages. In these remarks, I’d like to touch on the question of Mediterranean Literature as a category of scholarly inquiry, then focus on the history of Jews in the Iberian Peninsula and in diaspora from it during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, with particular attention to language and literary practice. Finally, we’ll have a look at a few examples of works of literature written, translated and printed by Sephardic Jews throughout the Mediterranean and think about how this literary activity is the product of a social network. Mediterranean studies has been dominated by Classicists and historians of the medieval and early modern periods. -
Discovering the Other Judeo-Spanish Vernacular
ḤAKETÍA: DISCOVERING THE OTHER JUDEO-SPANISH VERNACULAR ALICIA SISSO RAZ VOCES DE ḤAKETÍA “You speak Spanish very well, but why are there so many archaic Cervantes-like words in your vocabulary?” This is a question often heard from native Spanish speakers regarding Ḥaketía, the lesser known of the Judeo-Spanish vernacular dialects (also spelled Ḥakitía, Ḥaquetía, or Jaquetía). Although Judeo-Spanish vernacular is presently associated only with the communities of northern Morocco, in the past it has also been spoken in other Moroccan regions, Algeria, and Gibraltar. Similar to the Djudezmo of the Eastern Mediterranean, Ḥaketía has its roots in Spain, and likewise, it is composed of predominantly medieval Castilian as well as vocabulary adopted from other linguistic sources. The proximity to Spain, coupled with other prominent factors, has contributed to the constant modification and adaptation of Ḥaketía to contemporary Spanish. The impact of this “hispanization” is especially manifested in Haketía’s lexicon while it is less apparent in the expressions and aphorisms with which Ḥaketía is so richly infused.1 Ladino, the Judeo-Spanish calque language of Hebrew, has been common among all Sephardic communities, including the Moroccan one, and differs from the spoken ones.2 The Jews of Spain were in full command of the spoken Iberian dialects throughout their linguistic evolutionary stages; they also became well versed in the official Spanish dialect, Castilian, since its formation. It presents all characteristics of a coastal river basin, formed essentially by the low lands of the alluvial plain of the Loukkos River, and surrounded by relatively low, essentially marly hills and long sandy beaches. The evolution of the mentioned coastal area and its continental shelf is relatively complex and it depends mostly on its geodynamic context. The goal of the present study is to materialize the relationship between the mentioned continental shelf and its hinterland in the region of Larache. The applied methodology was the morphostructural analysis of the envelope surface in order to bring out the original geomorphological structures and slope failures axes. The overall results allowed us to develop a synthetic structural schema. The structural continuity from hinterland to continental shelf in the area. The Portuguese Art of War in Northern Morocco During the 15 Century
Athens Journal of History - Volume 3, Issue 4 – Pages 321-336 The Portuguese Art of War in Northern Morocco during the 15th Century By Vitor Luís Gaspar Rodrigues This paper not only reviews the motives underlying the Portuguese expansionist project in Morocco in the 15th century, but also the political, economic, and particularly the social reasons that were in the basis of the Portuguese art of war in Morocco in that period. During the Iberian Reconquest (Reconquista), warfare was usually practiced by means of cavalcades, raids (razias) and ambushes, alongside with some siege actions. We will try to demonstrate that the Portuguese were forced to adopt a model of restricted territorial occupation and repeat the same technics and tactics of combat in Morocco, chiefly based on guerrilla war (guerra guerreada), as well as on siege and privateering actions, either offshore or onshore, by means of amphibian landings (saltos). We will also approach some of the changes that occurred in the defence systems of the Portuguese strongholds in North Africa, particularly at the turn of the 15th to the 16th centuries, as a result of the need to respond to the new challenges by the Moroccan armies equipped with fire weaponry. Under the strong influence of the traditional historiography as it developed during the ninetieth century – the Monumenta Henricina , with fourteen volumes- , originally included official documents produced by government, kings and Pope as well as merchants and traders, such as royal charters but also correspondence. The first part, reflect the context of preparing the collection of documents and unveiling the ideological intentions of the project. In the second part, classify the types of acts diplomatically highlighting the importance of each in the documentary corpus . I argue that the situated tactics of courtly literature use genealogical and geographical paradigms to redefine national sovereignty. Before the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588, before the divorce trials of Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon in the 1530s, a rich and complex network of dynastic, economic, and political alliances existed between medieval England and the Iberian kingdoms. The marriages of John of Gaunt’s two daughters to the Castilian and Portuguese kings created a legacy of Anglo-Iberian cultural exchange ii that is evident in the literature and manuscript culture of both England and Iberia. Because England, Castile, and Portugal all saw the rise of new dynastic lines at the end of the fourteenth century, the subsequent literature produced at their courts is preoccupied with issues of genealogy, just rule, and political consent. Dynastic foundation narratives compensate for the uncertainties of succession by evoking the longue durée of national histories—of Trojan diaspora narratives, of Roman rule, of apostolic foundation—and situating them within universalizing historical modes.
