Try as we might to be polite about it, or cage it with “we have a generous funding system in Canada,” there’s simply no denying that our industry produces some of the best kids and youth television and digital media in the world. Studies and sheer market reach support this claim. So the question becomes, why? Why do Canadians make such awesome programming? I have to believe that part of the answer is that we care. It’s why you’re here. The Youth Media Alliance Conference is unique in that its primary focus is on how to make our stuff better for kids. Over the next few days, you’re going to be introduced to new ideas, fresh approaches and peers who are taking risks, all in a continuing eff ort to make a positive diff erence in kids’ lives. On behalf of the Board of Directors, we’re thrilled to welcome you to this year’s conference and challenge you to join in on the discussion, share your experiences and get inspired. Even in these trying economic times, our community has maintained an incredibly high standard for itself; conferences like this give us our greatest shot at besting that standard and raising it one notch higher. Enjoy! J.J. JOHNSON PETER MOSS 4 programme-en.indd 4 06/11/12 11:20:10 WORD FROM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR We’re kicking it off in grand style! Welcome to Média-Jeunes! We’re excited today to be announcing the results of the study report Are the Kids All Right? Canadian Families and Television in the Digital Age, in tandem with Université de Montréal’s Centre for Youth and Media Studies (CYMS), as well as our partners Bell Media and the CMF. The study and report are available on our website at ymamj.org/study. The report is a follow up to the 2009 National Study on Children’s Television Programming in Canada, presented at the 2009 Children, Youth & Media Conference in Toronto and the 2010 Karlstad World Summit in Sweden. This ground-breaking publication is the product of three years’ work on the part of a small team led by professor André H. Caron, EdD. Using youth programming data obtained during the initial phase, the second phase focused on observing Canadian families in their homes and investigating what kids and parents think of contemporary youth television. Children may indeed be growing up in a diff erent world, but the study sheds light on what families and young people would still like to see on our screens. With Maya Goetz, Ph.D., Director of Munich’s Prix Jeunesse Foundation, and a host of other prestigious guests, we’ll be in good company. The conference will also be a good time to take stock of the full range of media platforms. In closing, I’d like to sincerely thank the Board of Directors, the Advisory Committee, all of our sponsors and especially CBC/Radio-Canada, which, as main sponsor once again this year, works tirelessly to support the development of the youth production industry. Hope you enjoy the event! CHANTAL BOWEN 5 programme-en.indd 5 06/11/12 11:20:10 WORD FROM SPONSORS We are very pleased to welcome you all to the 2012 Média-Jeunes Conference at the Maison de Radio-Canada in Montreal. Radio-Canada has been committed to children and youth for over 75 years, and considers that commitment to be an essential aspect of its mandate to serve our culture. To this end, Radio-Canada hopes to have a positive influence on the lives of French-speaking kids all over the country and support their development both as individuals and citizens. Télévision de Radio-Canada has a long tradition and maintains a special relationship with its young audiences by off ering high-quality programming that is mostly Canadian. As young people’s relationship to media changes, Radio-Canada is working not only to develop a great deal of original digital content, but to spin off our TV series to provide a rewarding multiplatform experience to our young French-speaking Web visitors throughout the country. Observing, listening to and understanding the needs and behaviour of the generation born into an interactive culture gives us powerful and essential indicators to guide our actions now and in the not-too-distant future. That’s why Radio-Canada has enthusiastically partnered with the Youth Media Alliance for this conference. It’s an excellent place for discussion and reflection on this crucial transition phase for our industry, which is largely being driven by children and teens’ media behaviours. Enjoy the conference! LOUISE LANTAGNE Executive Director, Télévision de Radio-Canada 6 programme-en.indd 6 06/11/12 11:20:10 WORD FROM SPONSORS No one watches just television anymore, and this is even truer of children and teens, who have access to a huge variety of content from all over the world on various platforms. It’s culturally enriching, certainly, but some content is best in small doses! The Média-Jeunes Conference suggests that we listen to young consumers and talk to them about what they like, love and absolutely can’t stand. With our speakers, we’ll look more closely at what youngsters think about Canadian TV, how they can directly influence the products designed for them and what games they would enjoy playing with their families. As always, the conference is a golden opportunity to get together with experts from home and abroad who will get us thinking in new directions— for a good cause: to better equip our children by creating entertaining educational content that unifies people and cultivates openness. Enjoy the Média-Jeunes Conference, everyone.
