  • Live Among the White Trash: a History of Nono----Manman on Stage
Live Among the White Trash: A history of nono----manman on stage “There are no No-Man concerts scheduled for the foreseeable future.” (from the official no-man website) Anyone who has followed no-man’s career over the previous ten years or so will be acutely aware that the band does not play live. If no-man “exist” as a band at all – and their infrequent releases mean they are more an ongoing understanding between two men rather than an active unit – it is only in the studio. Over a series of uncompromising albums no-man’s music has become ever more complex, yet ironically, “live sounding” than the release which proceeded it. But this organic “liveness” is mainly an illusion; the feeling of spontaneity often the result of numerous edits and takes which only the precision of studio work can produce. Others have tried to perform equally difficult music live: Radiohead ambitiously thrusting their clicks-and- cuts post-rock upon the world’s stadiums, for example. But for a variety of reasons, no-man simply haven’t tried – at least, not since 1994 and not until a one-off performance in 2006. The only comparable case is Talk Talk’s retreat into the studio in the late 1980s. Both bands have undoubtedly crafted their best work without going near an audience. 1 But it wasn’t always so. no-man were once very much a live act, promoting singles and albums with dates and undertaking two full-blown tours – though they rarely played outside London, never went further north than Newcastle, and never played outside Great Britain.

  • Steve Jansen – Tender Extinction

Piotr Mulawka Leksykon polskiej i światowej muzyki elektronicznej „Zrealizowano w ramach programu stypendialnego Ministra Kultury i Dziedzictwa Narodowego-Kultura w sieci” Wydawca: Piotr Mulawka [email protected] © 2020 Wszelkie prawa zastrzeżone ISBN 978-83-943331-4-0 2 Przedmowa Muzyka elektroniczna narodziła się w latach 50-tych XX wieku, a do jej powstania przyczyniły się zdobycze techniki z końca XIX wieku m.in. telefon- pierwsze urządzenie służące do przesyłania dźwięków na odległość (Aleksander Graham Bell), fonograf- pierwsze urządzenie zapisujące dźwięk (Thomas Alv Edison 1877), gramofon (Emile Berliner 1887). (śpiew ptaków, hałas uliczny, rozmowy) i próbował je przekształcać. Tak powstała muzyka nazwana konkretną (fr. musigue concrete). W tym samym roku wyemitował w radiu „Koncert szumów”. Jego najważniejszą kompozycją okazał się utwór pt. „Symphonie pour un homme seul” z 1950 roku. W kolejnych latach muzykę konkretną łączono z muzyką tradycyjną. Oto pionierzy tego eksperymentu: John Cage i Yannis Xenakis. Muzyka konkretna pojawiła się w kompozycji Rogera Watersa. Utwór ten trafił na ścieżkę dźwiękową do filmu „The Body” (1970). Grupa Beaver and Krause wprowadziła muzykę konkretną do utworu „Walking Green Algae Blues” z albumu „In A Wild Sanctuary” (1970), a zespół Pink Floyd w „Animals” (1977). Pierwsze próby tworzenia muzyki elektronicznej miały miejsce w Darmstadt (w Niemczech) na Międzynarodowych Kursach Nowej Muzyki w 1950 roku. W 1951 roku powstało pierwsze studio muzyki elektronicznej przy Rozgłośni Radia Zachodnioniemieckiego w Kolonii (NWDR- Nordwestdeutscher Rundfunk). Tu tworzyli: H. Eimert (Glockenspiel 1953), K. The album gathered together the most eclectic influences of all his recordings, ranging from soul music to jazz fusion to blues to Eastern-inflected spiritual chants, and most of the songs' lyrics reflected the now year-old Sylvian's inner peace resulting from his marriage, family, and beliefs. Unlike their past work, Sylvian decided to use methods of improvisation like those he explored in his work with Holger Czukay. I sat stunned for a moment and then realised: It's over; this is as far as it goes…In a sense, I'd been steadily working my way toward Manafon since I was a young man listening to Stockhausen and dabbling in deconstructing the pop song. The release, a 15 minute long composition, was composed based on improvisations by Sylvian and Jan Bang - with contributions by Otomo Yoshihide and Toshimaru Nakamura - and was recorded in a schoolhouse in Norway. • Thesis Madelena Caron
Fade To Grey: Post-Punk and Lost Modernist Futures Madelena Caron Professor Longabucco (GLS) This thesis has been submitted on this day of April 15th, 2021 in partial fulfillment of the degree requirements for the Global Liberal Studies Bachelor of Arts degree. 1 Abstract The many sub-genres that fall under the rather vague umbrella term, “post-punk,” tend to be characterized by a nostalgia and a rumination on cultural objects, movements, and aesthetics of the past— more specifically, of the modernist period, lasting from roughly the turn of the twentieth century through the 1940s. The scope of this project includes several bands from the United Kingdom and Germany that belong to various sub-genres of post-punk (of which there are many): Ultravox, Spandau Ballet, Japan, Visage, Cabaret Voltaire, and Deutsch-Amerikanische Freundschaft. These bands share something in common, despite their sonic and aesthetic differences—namely, frequent citations of culture from the modernist period and, despite their historical references, formal experimentation with the boundaries of music and pop culture. The synthesizer revolutionized late-twentieth-century music, and each of these bands merges its retro themes and/or aesthetics with its sonically futuristic music in a slightly different way. This project delves into the following questions: In which ways and why did post-punk musicians engage in dialogue with, and take inspiration from, modernist culture in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s? What about the political, social, and economic climates of the

  • Steve Jansen & Richard Barbieri –

There are some familiar faces here, and pictures that invite the viewer into the world of a group of musicians who left a profound mark on a generation of younger listeners and emerging artists. Japan formed in London in 1974, signing to the German record label, Ariola Hansa in 1977, before eventually moving to Virgin Records in 1980. The group disbanded shortly thereafter in 1982, folllowing the release of their critically-acclaimed studio album, Tin Drum, and just prior to the release of a live album in 1983, Oil on Canvas, which documented their final tour. During this time Jansen was most readily visible as the band’s drummer, but his camera was never far away and the subsequent images, taken on the road and in the studio, serve as a remarkable record of that chapter in the group’s history. But these images are not simply archival and they do not belong to the past alone. In fact, looking at them in the context of the gallery now, where they are accompanied by the most recent of Steve’s audio recordings - a lush, forty-eight minute instrumental titled, corridor (2018) - they emphatically shed their historic trappings and emerge as contemporary works, as vital today as they were almost forty years ago.
