STREET TREE MASTERPLAN

Why do we need a Street Tree Masterplan

Street trees are one of the Town's most important natural assets. The Town is known for its leafy streetscapes and diverse urban canopy. From boulevard plantings such as Oceanic Drive to avenue plantings of Joseph Street and

St Leonards Ave, street trees contribute significantly to the character and identity of the Town.

However as temperatures increase and urban development accelerates , the role played by our street trees as

'green infrastructure' has become even more critical. The Street Tree Masterplan (STMP) will ensure the longevity and sustainability of these assets, as well as the character of our streetscapes and identity of our local spaces.

Objectives of the STMP

The plan also contains fact sheets for all the selected tree To address the importance of management of street trees, the town has prepared the STMP with the species, and maps indicating the arrangement of these species within the Town's streetscapes. following guiding principles:

The Town will reference this plan for any new street tree • Develop attractive tree canopies for every street in the Town planting within the Town's streetscapes.

• Increase the Towns overall tree canopy area each year Importance of Street Trees Tree Species Selection Social benefits • Improve the visual appeal of commercial centres The benefits of increased tree canopy coverage are Due to the harsh climatic conditions of the WA coastal • Aesthetics - trees soften the urban environment and • Select appropriate tree species for the towns numerous and include environmental, social and landscape, only strong adaptable tree species are provide seasonal interest streets economic. Several studies have revealed the following suitable to plant as street trees. The Town has • Shady steetscapes have been linked to increased • Forster community awareness of the importance benefits: implemented a number of criteria to determine of street trees and create a sense of pride in the outdoor activity and involvement in social activity Environmental benefits selection of street tree species. These include; quality of our streetscapes • Street trees can enhance public safety and have been • Aesthetics and characteristics of the tree i.e. bark • Shady streetscapes can reduce urban temperature or found to reduce crime 'heat island effect' of up to 3˚C during the day and texture, foliage, color, flower, etc. • Exposure to green surroundings reduces mental How to use the STMP 12˚C in the evening • Structural characteristics i.e. height, width, growth fatigue and irritability The STMP is to be utilized as a guide by both the Town habit, root structure, etc. • Trees create oxygen, which improves air quality • Street trees have been found to have significant and the Community to select the appropriate tree species • Origin of species, i.e. WA Endemic vs Native vs • Reduced energy use in cooling indoor spaces health benefits including a lower prevalence of for planting in each of the Towns 300 streets. The plan Exotic references each street and the selected street tree • Reduced water use in irrigation asthma in children • Local environmental factors such as, solar and wind species. There is also an alternative species option if the • Reduced storm water runoff and improved Economic benefits exposure original species is unable to be installed. groundwater quality • Healthy tree cover can increase real estate turn-over • Location and impact from coastal winds and salt • Improved ecological diversity and wildlife habitat or unoccupied periods when a home is on the market • Key traffic sightlines

• Improved tree canopy coverage can reduce • Leaf litter, fruit, flower and/ or nut drop

household costs e.g. air conditioning • Proximity of underground utilities or powerlines

• A leafy streetscape is an aspirational trait and has • Historical significance or identity of the species been found to increase the value of property • Deciduous vs non deciduous significantly
