Barry Windholtz will become the new pastor at Holy Cross Immaculata Parish while continuing his responsibilities as pastor at St. Rose Parish in the East End. Born in Cincinnati, Fr. Barry has served the Catholic Church for 33 years. He was raised on the west side of town, graduated from the University of Cincinnati, and spent seven years in the business world before entering the seminary. He completed his pastoral internship year at St. Jude Parish in Bridgetown Our new pastor prefers to be called Fr. Barry. He was ordained in 1988 with a Masters of Divinity and a Masters of Arts in Biblical Studies. and was associate pastor at Guardian Angles Church before going back to school to obtain a Masters Degree in Canon Law from St. Paul’s University in Ottawa, Canada. He has been pastor at St. Rose since 2000. He has always been willing to take on additional responsibilities. He has been a judge on the Marriage Tribunal, chaplain at both St. Ursula Villa and Summit Country Day Middle School, and served for a few years as Masterof Ceremonies for Archbishop Pilarczyk. Taking on the role of pastor of two parishes is not new for Fr. Barry. For six years he served as rector of St. Peter in Chains Cathedral for six years while maintaining his duties as pastor at St. Rose. Father Barry serves on the Advisory Boards for the St. Vincent de Paul Society and Cincinnati Pregnancy Center East. He was honored in 2018 at the St. Vincent de Paul Society Annual Celebration of Service. He believes when blessed with many material things, it is important that one gives back both financially and by service to the community. He is a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus and Commander with Star of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem. St. Rose has a Saturday evening Mass at 7p.m. and three masses on Sunday. Fr. Barry plans relies on the help of many of the priests who teach at Mt. St. Mary’s Seminary since he also receives many requests from engaged couples who remember him from Summit Country Day or from St. Ursula Villa who want him to preside at their wedding ceremonies. He plans to be part of the rotating schedule here while continuing to be on the rotation at St. Rose. Fr. Anthony Brausch, rector at Mt. St. Mary’s Seminary will be the priest who will preside most regularly at the 4:00 & 10:30 liturgies. Other priests from the seminary will also be on the rotation. Fr. Barry’s first official decision concerning our parish is to continue the current weekend Mass schedule. Fr. Phil Seher, a retired priest from the Archdiocese, will preside at the 8a.m. Sunday Mass. As long as he is ready, willing and able, Fr. Barry has agreed to keep the full schedule with the understanding that if attendance decreases or if Fr. Seher is not available, the Mass will be discontinued. Other possible changes may occur over the next few years as the Beacons of Light longterm planning program gets underway. As we welcome Fr. Barry to our parish, we encourage everyone to maintain a positive outlook, support the parish both financially, in volunteer roles, and most importantly, give our new pastor a chance. That is what the people of St. Rose did twentyone years ago when Fr. Barry became their pastor. The attendance at St. Rose is one of the largest in our area Nso obviously Fr. Barry has done something right! JULY PRESIDER SCHEDULE July 34: 4:00: Fr. Barry Windholtz 8:00: Fr. Phil Seher 10:30: Fr. Anthony Brausch July 1011: 4:00: Fr. Barry Windholtz 8:00: Fr. Anthony Brausch WELCOME MARY CATHERINE LEVRI The newest member of our music ministry is Mary Catherine Levri. Mary Catherine will be the accompanist and director for the 10:30 Mass. Blake Callahan will continue to lead on Saturday and will be the liturgist for all weddings. Unfortunately, neither of them is available on Sundays at 8:00, so that Mass will not have music. Mary Catherine is the director of music at Mount St. Mary’s Seminary at the Athenaeum of Ohio. She received a Doctorate of Musical Arts in organ performance from the University of Notre Dame in 2017. Mary Catherine served as the Assistant Director of the Liturgical Choir, Director of the Community Choir, and Assistant Organist at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart at Notre Dame from 2010 to 2015. In 2008, she received a Master’s of Theological Studies from the Pontifical John Paul II Institute for Studies in Marriage and Family. At Mount St. Mary’s Seminary, Mary Catherine teaches a developed music curriculum and conducts two choirs in the “Music & Liturgy at the Athenaeum” series. Outside of the Seminary, she has worked with wellrespected musical groups in the Cincinnati area, including the May Festival, Camerata, and Collegium Cincinnati. She has given lectures on church music for the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, the National Association of Pastoral Musicians, the American Guild of Organists, and the Notre Dame Center for Liturgy. She has served as organist and choir director in parishes in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, Indiana, and frequently fills in as an organist at a number of parishes in Cincinnati. We are very fortunate to have these two outstanding music ministers our parish. We know that they will continue to work with the other members of the music ministry to provide outstanding music for our community as we give praise to God through song! Wear Your Wild Socks Weekend June 26-27 Join the Hilltoppers Senior Group for Lunch June 30th @ 11:15am at The parish will have hospitality 7 after all the Masses next weekend as we say goodbye to Fr.

  • The Development of US Roman Catholic Church Lay Leaders
The Development of U.S. Roman Catholic Church Lay Leaders For a Future with Fewer Priests A dissertation submitted to the Division of Research and Advanced Studies of the University of Cincinnati in partial fulfillment of the Requirements for the degree of Doctor of Education (Ed.D) in the Urban Educational Leadership program of the College of Education, Criminal Justice, and Human Services 2013 by Gloria Jean Parker-Martin B.S., University of Cincinnati, 1974 M.B.A., Xavier University, 1979 Committee Chair: Mary Brydon-Miller, PhD ii Abstract The Catholic Church of the United States is facing a future with fewer priests. The diminishing number means many more parishes will be without a resident pastor, and some parishes will no longer have a priest available to them at all. The trend makes it more likely that new models of ministry will need to be launched to maintain Catholic faith communities throughout the country. It is likely more and more responsibility for the growth of such churches will rest with lay leaders. This study looks at the problem through the lens of Change Theory with the methodology of Action Research. This report examines the effects of the priest shortage trends on St. Anthony Parish in Madisonville, and the efforts to define the best ministerial and administrative structure for its lay people to position the parish within a Pastoral Region in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati. For the U.S. Church to survive the laity must begin to take on roles that priests once held. There is a new vigor for the laity, particularly women, to assume stronger roles in the parishes.
