  • 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Rutherford, Napa Valley
2018 CABERNET SAUVIGNON RUTHERFORD, NAPA VALLEY A BRIEF HIS TORY For decades, it has been our goal to produce a Rutherford AVA, estate- grown Cabernet Sauvignon. Inspired by the early Cabernets of Inglenook and Beaulieu Vineyard, we’ve spent the past 20 years finding, farming and obtaining highly sought after land in Rutherford—with particular attention to the Rutherford Bench—to perfect our craft. It all began with the acquisition of the Red Barn Vineyard in 1994. This prime location provided us with 40 acres of soil perfectly suited to grow Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon and a century-old facility in which we would become Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon producers for the first time. Then Frank Leeds—longtime Frog’s Leap Vineyardist—agreed to a partnership with his family’s Chavez Leeds Vineyard. Situated on the iconic Rutherford Bench, this vineyard gave us our first real taste of how complex and connected dry-farmed, organically-grown Cabernet Sauvignon from this storied part of the appellation could be. In 2007, we purchased the historic Rossi Vineyard located in the very heart of the Rutherford Bench. This 50 acre vineyard was purchased by the Rossi family in 1906 and is located only a stone’s throw away from the two vineyards that originally inspired us. ABOUT THE WINE There is very little doubt that 2018 is going to go down as one of the best and most classic Cabernet vintages in the Napa Valley in recent memory. The Frog’s Leap Estate Grown will show you why. Superb balance, pure Rutherford aromas and a natural density achieved only in the best year.

  • About Heitz Cellar Founded in 1961, Heitz Cellar Is a Napa Valley
About Heitz Cellar Founded in 1961, Heitz Cellar is a Napa Valley legend that has helped shape the history of Napa winemaking. Pioneering vintner Joe Heitz ushered in Napa’s modern era with his iconic, globally- celebrated wines—including Napa Valley’s first vineyard-designated Cabernet Sauvignon, the renowned Heitz Cellar Martha’s Vineyard. In 2018, the winery entered an exciting new chapter as the Heitz family passed this rich legacy into the hands of the Lawrence family, whose deep roots in agriculture and commitment to the same core values of fine winemaking made it a perfect match. “I’ve enjoyed coming to the Napa Valley for some time and have long admired the wine industry from afar,” says new owner Gaylon M. Lawrence, Jr. “Our family was fortunate to have an extraordinary opportunity to acquire such a remarkable family business with Heitz Cellar. We’re very excited about the winery’s bright future.” Under the Lawrence family’s guidance, the winery will continue to offer wines in the quintessential Heitz style. Made with an unwavering commitment to quality from organically farmed, 100% Napa Valley fruit, Heitz wines continue to represent the Lawrences’ agrarian roots and commitment to the stewardship of Napa Valley. A new chapter for Heitz Cellar Before the Lawrence family took the plunge into the wine world, their agricultural focus was mainly on cotton, soybeans, rice, and citrus in the South Eastern part of the United States. When Gaylon’s daughter Westin Lawrence relocated to Napa Valley to earn a degree from the Culinary Institute of America, she became captivated by its vineyards and culture.

  • 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Vineyard Georges III Rutherford - Napa Valley
2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Vineyard Georges III Rutherford - Napa Valley THE VINEYARD Sojourn sources Cabernet Sauvignon Clone 337 grapes from the renowned F-Block within Vineyard Georges III in Rutherford. Soils are primarily sandy loam, with a fair amount of rock from the old creek bed that runs through F-Block. This vineyard is the former Beaulieu Vineyard No. 3, which was originally planted by Georges de Latour of Beaulieu in 1928. The property is located adjacent to the Caymus Winery between Conn Creek Road and Silverado Trail. WINEMAKER NOTES The 2015 vintage started with a bang – an unusually warm winter and dry spring promoted early bud-break, with severe drought conditions continuing throughout the growing season. Cabernet Sauvignon responded by producing loose clusters and smaller berries, with an abundance of flavor and ripe tannins. It was one of the earliest harvests on record with lower than average yields. The resulting wines display tremendous finesse, depth and aromatic intensity. Vineyard Georges III basked in the hot dry conditions, and the fruit ripened naturally to a condition of exceptional flavors and ripe tannins. The resulting wine is bold and rich, with ample structure. In 2015 we picked F-Block in two separate sweeps, taking the ripe clusters first and letting the others hang longer to reach optimal maturity. The individual components were then blended to create a beautifully balanced Cabernet Sauvignon with silky smooth textures that showcase the classic Rutherford Dust. • Inglenook Historical Timeline : 1842 - 2011
INGLENOOK HISTORICAL TIMELINE : 1842 - 2011 1842 30th August – Gustav Ferdinand Nybom is born in Helsinki, Finland. 1861 Nybom graduates from the Nautical Institute in Helsinki (19 years old) After receiving his master papers from Nautical Institute, Nybom (22 yrs old) commands a ship headed to Alaska, which is part of the Russian 1864 Empire. Not long after the US purchase of Alaska, Nybom sails into San Francisco harbour with a ship loaded with Alaskan furs. He creates the Alaska Commercial Company (26 yrs old) which, for the next 50 years, would build important trading stations in the Yukon and Aleutian Islands. 1868 The company also owned ocean steamers, sailing vessels and river boats, which were the only means of transportation to and from San Francisco during the Gold Rush, as well as fur operations and salmon canneries. William C Watson, son in law of George C Yount (founder of Yountville) and manager of the Bank of Napa, buys the 78 acre G. Koni farm, west of Rutherford. He 1872 names it Inglenook, a Scottish expression meaning 'cozy corner' or 'fireside,' and plants the first vines. 1873 Nybom changes his name to Gustave Niebaum and marries Susan Shingleberger, a native Californian. 1873-1879 Agricultural and industrial depression hits the US economy. California winemakers consider abandoning the industry. Watson sells the Inglenook land to Judge S Clinton Hastings, founder of the University of California Hastings Law School. Niebaum, who by this time had amassed a personal fortune in excess of $10 million, buys the 440 acre farm from Mrs. Rohlwing and the 78 acre Inglenook Farm from Judge Hastings.

  • Guild of Sommeliers' Napa Valley Staff Training Guide
STAFF TRAINING MODULE Napa Valley Napa Valley, America’s most iconic wine region, appears saturated with the vine, yet it only accounts for a mere 4% of California wine. 45,000 acres of vineyards carpet the valley floor and dot surrounding hillsides and mountains. With an emphasis on luxury wines, this small region on California’s North Coast has cemented its image as a destination for wine tourists from around the globe, and as a world-class producer of Cabernet Sauvignon. Every third vine in Napa is Cabernet, yet the valley’s complex soil patterns, coupled with changing degrees of altitude, sunlight, and temperature, provide a diversity of source material for the winemaker to sculpt into wine. Nor is Cabernet the whole story; hundreds of varieties, from Sauvignon Blanc to Charbono to Zinfandel, thrive somewhere in the valley’s gentle, Mediterranean climate. 1 History As the second region nationally designated as an “American Viticultural Area”, Napa Valley AVA dates to 1981, but the valley’s rich history of viticulture began in the late 1830s. Spurred along by the booming days of the 1849 California Gold Rush, Napa wines achieved occasional international notice in the latter half of the 19th century, and some of today’s houses, such as Charles Krug, Schramsberg, and Beringer, date to the 1860s and ‘70s. In 1880 Scottish poet Robert Louis Stevenson famously pronounced Napa’s wines as “bottled poetry” during a honeymoon sojourn in the valley. Robert Mondavi The specter of temperance and Prohibition loomed large, and the valley’s industry was crippled with passage of the 18th Amendment.
