  • 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Rutherford, Napa Valley
2018 CABERNET SAUVIGNON RUTHERFORD, NAPA VALLEY A BRIEF HIS TORY For decades, it has been our goal to produce a Rutherford AVA, estate- grown Cabernet Sauvignon. Inspired by the early Cabernets of Inglenook and Beaulieu Vineyard, we’ve spent the past 20 years finding, farming and obtaining highly sought after land in Rutherford—with particular attention to the Rutherford Bench—to perfect our craft. It all began with the acquisition of the Red Barn Vineyard in 1994. This prime location provided us with 40 acres of soil perfectly suited to grow Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon and a century-old facility in which we would become Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon producers for the first time. Then Frank Leeds—longtime Frog’s Leap Vineyardist—agreed to a partnership with his family’s Chavez Leeds Vineyard. Situated on the iconic Rutherford Bench, this vineyard gave us our first real taste of how complex and connected dry-farmed, organically-grown Cabernet Sauvignon from this storied part of the appellation could be. In 2007, we purchased the historic Rossi Vineyard located in the very heart of the Rutherford Bench. This 50 acre vineyard was purchased by the Rossi family in 1906 and is located only a stone’s throw away from the two vineyards that originally inspired us. ABOUT THE WINE There is very little doubt that 2018 is going to go down as one of the best and most classic Cabernet vintages in the Napa Valley in recent memory. The Frog’s Leap Estate Grown will show you why. Superb balance, pure Rutherford aromas and a natural density achieved only in the best year.

  • About Heitz Cellar Founded in 1961, Heitz Cellar Is a Napa Valley
About Heitz Cellar Founded in 1961, Heitz Cellar is a Napa Valley legend that has helped shape the history of Napa winemaking. Pioneering vintner Joe Heitz ushered in Napa’s modern era with his iconic, globally- celebrated wines—including Napa Valley’s first vineyard-designated Cabernet Sauvignon, the renowned Heitz Cellar Martha’s Vineyard. In 2018, the winery entered an exciting new chapter as the Heitz family passed this rich legacy into the hands of the Lawrence family, whose deep roots in agriculture and commitment to the same core values of fine winemaking made it a perfect match. “I’ve enjoyed coming to the Napa Valley for some time and have long admired the wine industry from afar,” says new owner Gaylon M. Lawrence, Jr. “Our family was fortunate to have an extraordinary opportunity to acquire such a remarkable family business with Heitz Cellar. We’re very excited about the winery’s bright future.” Under the Lawrence family’s guidance, the winery will continue to offer wines in the quintessential Heitz style. Made with an unwavering commitment to quality from organically farmed, 100% Napa Valley fruit, Heitz wines continue to represent the Lawrences’ agrarian roots and commitment to the stewardship of Napa Valley. A new chapter for Heitz Cellar Before the Lawrence family took the plunge into the wine world, their agricultural focus was mainly on cotton, soybeans, rice, and citrus in the South Eastern part of the United States. When Gaylon’s daughter Westin Lawrence relocated to Napa Valley to earn a degree from the Culinary Institute of America, she became captivated by its vineyards and culture.

PREVIEWCOPY Introduction Previewing this guidebook? If you are previewing this guidebook in advance of purchase, please check out our enhanced preview, which will give you a deeper look at this guidebook. Wine guides for the ultra curious, Approach Guides take an in-depth look at a wine region’s grapes, appellations and vintages to help you discover wines that meet your preferences. The Loire Valley — featuring a compelling line-up of distinctive grape varieties, high quality winemaking and large production volumes — is home to some of France’s most impressive wines. Nevertheless, it remains largely overlooked by the international wine drinking public. This makes the region a treasure trove of exceptional values, just waiting to be discovered. What’s in this guidebook • Grape varieties. We describe the Loire’s primary red and white grape varieties and where they reach their highest expressions. • Vintage ratings. We offer a straightforward vintage ratings table, which affords high-level insight into the best and most challenging years for wine production. • A Loire Valley wine label. We explain what to look for on a Loire Valley wine label and what it tells you about what’s in the bottle. • Map and appellation profiles. Leveraging our map of the region, we provide detailed pro- files of appellations from all five of the Loire’s sub-regions (running from west to east): Pays Nantais, Anjou, Saumur, Touraine and Central Vineyards. For each appellation, we describe the prevailing terroir, the types of wine produced and what makes them distinctive. • A distinctive approach. This guidebook’s approach is unique: rather than tell you what specific bottle of wine to order by providing individual bottle reviews, it gives the information you need to make informed wine choices on any list.

  • 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Vineyard Georges III Rutherford - Napa Valley
2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Vineyard Georges III Rutherford - Napa Valley THE VINEYARD Sojourn sources Cabernet Sauvignon Clone 337 grapes from the renowned F-Block within Vineyard Georges III in Rutherford. Soils are primarily sandy loam, with a fair amount of rock from the old creek bed that runs through F-Block. This vineyard is the former Beaulieu Vineyard No. 3, which was originally planted by Georges de Latour of Beaulieu in 1928. The property is located adjacent to the Caymus Winery between Conn Creek Road and Silverado Trail. WINEMAKER NOTES The 2015 vintage started with a bang – an unusually warm winter and dry spring promoted early bud-break, with severe drought conditions continuing throughout the growing season. Cabernet Sauvignon responded by producing loose clusters and smaller berries, with an abundance of flavor and ripe tannins. It was one of the earliest harvests on record with lower than average yields. The resulting wines display tremendous finesse, depth and aromatic intensity. Vineyard Georges III basked in the hot dry conditions, and the fruit ripened naturally to a condition of exceptional flavors and ripe tannins. The resulting wine is bold and rich, with ample structure. In 2015 we picked F-Block in two separate sweeps, taking the ripe clusters first and letting the others hang longer to reach optimal maturity. The individual components were then blended to create a beautifully balanced Cabernet Sauvignon with silky smooth textures that showcase the classic Rutherford Dust. I will keep your award winning wines in mind when there is a need to select more fine wines to serve at the White House. With best wishes, TtfJ!J:__ ~ICHAEL K. DEAVER Assistant to the President Deputy Chief of Staff Mr. Bill Blosser President Sokol Blosser Winery Post Off ice Box 199 Blanchard Lane Dundee, Oregon 97115 Mr. Michael K. Deaver Deputy White House Chief of Staff White House 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue Washington D.C. Dear- Mr. Deaver: It has been brought to my attention that the selection of the White House wines rests with you and that your selection is limited to U.S. wines. May I suggest that you consider the Northwestern wines when making your selection? Sokol Blosser is the largest winery in Oregon and our wines have made impressive showings at wine tastings both here and abroad. Additionally, it has been selected as the house wine at the prestigeous Benson Hotel in Portland. Enclosed you will find a list of the medals Sokol Blosser wines have won. It is also my understanding that the Presidential favorites are full-bodied, red wines and that our First Lady prefers light, white wines. Therefore, I am sending you for your evaluation a bottle of our Pinet Noir and one of our Chardonnay. A$ you may well be aware, the laws governing wine labeling are much stricter in Oregon that elsewhere in the U.S., and our climate is much like the grape producing regions of France.

  • Inglenook Historical Timeline : 1842 - 2011
INGLENOOK HISTORICAL TIMELINE : 1842 - 2011 1842 30th August – Gustav Ferdinand Nybom is born in Helsinki, Finland. 1861 Nybom graduates from the Nautical Institute in Helsinki (19 years old) After receiving his master papers from Nautical Institute, Nybom (22 yrs old) commands a ship headed to Alaska, which is part of the Russian 1864 Empire. Not long after the US purchase of Alaska, Nybom sails into San Francisco harbour with a ship loaded with Alaskan furs. He creates the Alaska Commercial Company (26 yrs old) which, for the next 50 years, would build important trading stations in the Yukon and Aleutian Islands. 1868 The company also owned ocean steamers, sailing vessels and river boats, which were the only means of transportation to and from San Francisco during the Gold Rush, as well as fur operations and salmon canneries. William C Watson, son in law of George C Yount (founder of Yountville) and manager of the Bank of Napa, buys the 78 acre G. Koni farm, west of Rutherford. He 1872 names it Inglenook, a Scottish expression meaning 'cozy corner' or 'fireside,' and plants the first vines. 1873 Nybom changes his name to Gustave Niebaum and marries Susan Shingleberger, a native Californian. 1873-1879 Agricultural and industrial depression hits the US economy. California winemakers consider abandoning the industry. Watson sells the Inglenook land to Judge S Clinton Hastings, founder of the University of California Hastings Law School. Niebaum, who by this time had amassed a personal fortune in excess of $10 million, buys the 440 acre farm from Mrs. Rohlwing and the 78 acre Inglenook Farm from Judge Hastings.

  • Drinking California Pinot Noir History from “Old Vine” Vineyards: a Bucket List
If you drink no Noir, you Pinot Noir Volume 12, Issue 8 August 19, 2020 Drinking California Pinot Noir History from “Old Vine” Vineyards: A Bucket List “Vine age is the key to balance. There’s no substitute for vine age.” Ted Lemon, Littorai There is no consensus or legal definition of “old vine” Pinot Noir. Wikipedia states, “In a place where wine production is longstanding, it often means a wine whose vines are thirty to forty years old.” I have used forty years (1980) as the cut-off for my California old vine Pinot Noir bucket list. Some would consider these “mature” vines only, insisting that the term “old” be reserved for vines older than this such as 125-year-old Zinfandel vines in California that are still bearing small amounts of fruit. Hanzell 1953 Ambassador’s Vineyard Pinot Noir Vine The term “old-vine” has created debate for years in the wine industry. Most winemakers believe the terminology should be defined and regulated. Some choose to define “old-vine” as a minimum of 20 years and others prefer 50 years as a minimum. There are also disagreements about the percentage of grapes that should be required in a wine labeled “old-vine.” Some winemakers would agree that “old-vine” grapes should make up at least 85% of the grapes contained in a wine sold as “old-vine,” and others demand that 95% of the grapes be from “old-vine” sources. There are variances to consider among different varietals as well. For example, Pinot Noir vineyards over 20 years are considered old, yet Zinfandel from a 20 year-old vineyard would not be labeled “old-vine.” The issue of “old-vines” results from the perception by many consumers who consider “old-vine” wines better.
