devastation for those in the path of Hurricane Harvey served as an immediate call to action for all of the Quincy Media stations. A demand that we not just cover the event, but provide tangible aid in any way humanly possible. Answering the plea for Red Cross and FEMA volunteers, we educated our local audiences on how they could put their skills and hearts directly to work in Texas. For the agencies gathering and shipping needed supplies, we guided the public. Even more importantly, we began to raise money for the key agencies providing aid on the ground. Our NBC stations in Sioux City, IA and Rochester MN did telethons that raised over $150,000 for the Red Cross in a matter of a few hours. WREX in Rockford, IL, KWWL in Waterloo, IA, along with our stations in Peoria, IL are partnered with the Salvation Army for on-going phone-a-thons to collect money for Texas relief. We’re doing the same with the United Way.

At a press conference in Washington with FCC Commissioner Jonathan S. Adelstein, the groups called for a crackdown on stations that present corporate-sponsored videos as genuine news to an unsuspecting audience. CMD, which unveiled the results of a 10-month investigation, found scores of local stations slipping commercial “video news releases,” or VNRs, into their regular news programming. The new multimedia report released today includes footage of 36 separate VNRs and their broadcast as “news” by TV stations and networks nationwide, including those in the nation’s biggest markets. The full report -- “Fake TV News: Widespread and Undisclosed” -- is now available complete with VNR and TV station video footage at www.prwatch.org/fakenews/execsummary.
