Four of the personnel were based at Odiham with 657 Sqn; the fifth was a member of the Army Reserve. My condolences go to all the family of those people that were lost. The temporary grounding of the Air Cadet Glider fleet took place just before the Easter break. This was due an error in the paperwork for the aircraft which was found during the auditing process and nothing to do with the aircraft themselves. It has been confirmed that Waddington runways will close mid September 2014 and will not reopen until November 2015. ...Mick Boulanger (Military movements is history, now and for our future) ABINGDON - In November 2007 Tynwald resolved that the Council of Ministers consider the establishment of a suitable body for the preservation of War Memorials in the Isle of Man. Subsequently in October 2008, following a report by a Working Group established by Council of Ministers to consider the matter, Tynwald gave approval to the formation of the Isle of Man Government Preservation of War Memorials Committee. I am pleased to lay the Annual Report before Tynwald from the Chair of the Committee. I would like to formally thank the members of the Committee for their interest and dedication shown in the preservation of Manx War Memorials and to especially acknowledge the outstanding voluntary contribution made by all the membership.     TAA / Australian Airlines 25 Year Club Newsletter No. 104 December 2019 Editor: John Wren President’s Report We should find out about the plans for QF’s 100th birthday celebrations in early 2020 [the actual birthday is in November 2020 but they are using the whole year to maximise the exposure]. We are hopeful that the TAA Museum will be able to participate with a special display of QF historical material and memorabilia. More later. The Tour Groups to the Museum have just started to slow down ahead of our closure for the festive season. Thursday pm the 5th December is our last day for 2019 – open again on Tuesday 4th February. We welcome Geoff and Vicki Kerton to the Museum as Volunteers. Just a friendly reminder if you are having a clean up at home, or downsizing, we will look after your donations of TAA and Australian Airlines memorabilia at the Museum. It would be a shame to have the family throw it out. The Museum has upgraded all its computers to Windows 10 as Windows 7 will no longer be supported by Microsoft from early January. You might look at your own situation at home. An Age [24/10/19] review of Hawaiian Airlines concluded with “native birdsong plays on entry and exit, and traditional Hawaiian music as your coming in to land. This airline is also lucky – in 1941 one of the airlines old eight seater Sikorsky’s was hit by Japanese fire at Pearl Harbour, which set an engine alight. Another stray bullet, however, hit a fire extinguisher, which put out the blaze! Well, it’s another year gone with 2020 just around the corner.

Darren Crick was the first Editor and Site Host; the later role he maintains. The Newsletter from December 2002 was compiled by Jan Herivel who tirelessly composed each issue for nearly six years. She was supported by contributors from a variety of backgrounds on subjects ranging from 1914 to the current period. It wasn’t easy due to the ebb and flow of contributions, but regular columns were kept by those who always made Jan’s deadlines. Jan has since left this site to further her professional ambitions. As stated “The Current ADF-Serials Telegraph is a more modest version than its predecessor, but maintains the direction of being an outlet and circulating Email Newsletter for this site”. Words from me I would argue that it is not a modest version anymore as recent years issues are breaking both page records populated with top quality articles! John and I say that comment is now truly being too modest! As stated, the original Newsletter that started from December 2002 and ended in 2008, and was circulated for 38 Editions, where by now...excluding this edition, the Telegraph has been posted 44 editions since 2011 to the beginning of this year, 2020.

    Changing times: the emergence of a Bronze Age on the Isle of Man. Rachel Joanne Crellin Doctor of Philosophy School of History, Classics and Archaeology Newcastle University February 2014 i Abstract In this thesis I consider the study of change. I present a critique of existing approaches to the study of change and time in a prehistoric context. I develop an approach that moves beyond explanations of change where change is the result of singular causation located in a single moment of time. I critically consider how change is understood in the work of key relational thinkers such as Latour, Bennett, Ingold and DeLanda, developing an understanding of change which stresses the interplay between continuously fluxing assemblages and episodes of dramatic change (phase transitions). The theoretical position established is applied to interpreting change during the Ronaldsway Late Neolithic and Early Bronze Age on the Isle of Man in an evidence-led analysis of material culture, mortuary practices and transformation of place. I focus on axes of stone and bronze and use them as a means to explore the effects of changing technology. New use-wear analysis on the Early Bronze Age corpus of metalwork from the Isle of Man is presented as a means of exploring the impact of bronze as a new material. I consider burial practices from 3000-1500 cal BC supported by twelve new radiocarbon dates. I also address changing relations with earth, drawing together diverse evidence including Earthfast Jar practices, the construction of burial monuments and the settlement evidence from the period. A new narrative for the period emerges highlighting the strength of an approach that draws on relational thinking.

Gressang IV, PhD, 2009 Directed By: Professor David Lalman, Department of Government and Politics Terrorist groups do not operate in isolation. To survive in the face of counter- pressures from their opponents, the group must establish a beneficial relationship with a targeted audience, a presumed constituency, in order to generate the sympathy and support necessary for maintaining operational viability. Existing studies of terrorism, however, offer few insights into how this might be done. The most common approach revolves around assessments of terrorist messages, yet typically treats those messages as self-serving propaganda or media manipulation. This study takes a different approach, suggesting that terrorists use statements and communiqués in an effort to gain and maintain a supportive audience. Further, the intended audience for the messages infer meaning in terrorist violence, thus augmenting or reducing the impact of persuasive messaging by the terrorist. Understanding this process, in turn, may yield new insights into the dynamic processes of terrorism, offering new opportunities to assess a terrorist group’s potential for positive evolutionary growth or greater relative fitness. Using Grunig’s situational theory of publics, this study creates and evaluates a new metric, called expected affinity, for examining the terrorist group’s effort to establish and strengthen bonds between itself and its targeted and presumptively supportive audience. Expected affinity combines sub-measures addressing problem recognition, expected and desired levels of involvement, and constraint recognition, coupled with an inferred meaning in the symbolism of violent acts in order to evaluate terrorist messages and attacks.
