Email [email protected] Abstract The story of soil is essentially the story of humanity. The words ‘earth and ‘ground’ are among the oldest in human language. Soil is the basis of our ancient religions, and of all our civilisations, and for the past 10,000 years its destruction has been the precursor of different civilisations’ downfall. All human communities have a cultural, sensual and spiritual attachment to the soil, but Western society has lost this attachment because of material prosperity, disconnection from the land, and a scientific culture that has fractured soil and its meaning, and in so doing, put it out of the reach of non-scientists’ understanding. As the repository of most soil knowledge, soil scientists have an important role in reconnecting people to soil. Introduction I came to soils late. Twelve years ago my journalism experience earned me a job producing soils information for farmers. My academic background had focussed on literature, drama and psychology. I knew nothing about soils, despite the fact that I had spent my childhood in the country, and my father was an agricultural scientist. My employers were unperturbed. We have more than enough information about soils, they said, but it is not accessible to farmers. We want you to make it easy to understand. So I set to work, and the most extraordinary thing happened. I fell in love with soil. There is no other way to explain it.

Nevertheless, solar and wind energy seem to have captured the public's support as potentially being the primary or total answer to our electric power needs. Solar cells and wind turbines are appealing because they are "renewables" with promising implications and because they emit no carbon dioxide during operation, which is certainly a plus. But because both are intermittent electric power generators, they cannot produce electricity "on demand," something that the public requires. We expect the lights to go on when we flip a switch, and we do not expect our computers to shut down as nature dictates.

But (again, according to the conventional time scale) a handful of odd multicellular organisms existed before the astonishing explosion of new forms in the Cambrian. These organisms, from the so- called Ediacaran fauna, named after the town of Ediacara in southern Australia where their fossil remains were discovered in 1947, are said to be 600 million years old. Figure 1 shows one well-known Ediacaran form, Dickinsonia.1 Now a novel interpretation of these puzzling fossils is generating considerable controversy within the paleontological community. Some scientists (notably the German paleontologist Adolf Seilacher and Harvard's Stephen Jay Gould) have suggested that the Ediacaran fauna--known also as the Vendozoa or Vendobionta (from the Vendian geological period in which they occur)--were "failed experiments" in the evolution of multicellular animals. Unlike the Cambrian organisms, these odd designs left no ancestors.2 But the novel interpretation, from University of Oregon paleontologist Gregory Retallack, suggests

Fred Read November 29, 2007 Blacksburg, Virginia Key words: Neoproterozoic, Ediacaran, Ediacara fossils, China, Disparity, Sulfur isotope, Carbon isotope Copyright 2007, Bing Shen Contributions to the Neoproterozoic Geobiology Bing Shen Abstract This thesis makes several contributions to improve our understanding of the Neoproterozoic Paleobiology. In chapter 1, a comprehensive quantitative analysis of the Ediacara fossils indicates that the oldest Ediacara assemblage—the Avalon assemblage— already encompassed the full range of Ediacara morphospace. A comparable morphospace range was occupied by the subsequent White Sea and Nama assemblages, although it was populated differently. In contrast, taxonomic richness increased in the White Sea assemblage and declined in the Nama assemblage. The Avalon morphospace expansion mirrors the Cambrian explosion, and both may reflect similar underlying mechanisms. Chapter 2 describes problematic macrofossils collected from the Neoproterozoic slate of the upper Zhengmuguan Formation in North China and sandstone of the Zhoujieshan Formation in Chaidam. Some of these fossils were previously interpreted as animal traces. Our study of these fossils recognizes four genera and five species. None of these taxa can be interpreted as animal traces. Instead, they are problematic body fossils of unresolved phylogenetic affinities. Chapter 3 reports stable isotopes of the Zhamoketi cap dolostone atop the Tereeken diamictite in the Quruqtagh area, eastern Chinese Tianshan. Our new data indicate that carbonate associated sulfate (CAS) abundance decreases rapidly in the basal 34 cap dolostone and δ SCAS composition varies between +9‰ and +15‰ in the lower 2.5 34 m.

There are three basins comprising Lake Chelan separated by bedrock sills: Stehekin, Lucerne, and Wapato (Figure 2). The Lucerne Basin is the deepest and longest, with relief of > 3200 m (10,660 000 ft.) from the bedrock floor of the valley to the summit of Bonanza Peak (2900 m) on its west valley wall (Figure 2). The shallower Wapato Basin is in part dammed by glacial drift south of Chelan (Stop 1.4; Runner 1921). Figure 1. Location of Lake Chelan in north-central Washington. The Lucerne and Stehekin basins are superimposed on resistant Skagit Gneiss and Tertiary igneous bedrock. The upper part of the valley is cut into resistant gneiss, which allows the canyon walls to stand near vertically along the upper lake. The deepest part of Lake Chelan occurs in the Lucerne Basin in The Straits near Falls Creek, where the bedrock changes from gneiss to erodible volcanic rocks and schist. The lower two basins are separated at the Narrows, an accumulation of landslide debris from Slide Ridge on the south shore, and bedrock on the north shore (Whetten, 1967).

    CHAPTER 4 Life in the Colonies 4.1 Introduction n 1723, a tired teenager stepped off a boat onto Philadelphia’s Market Street wharf. He was an odd-looking sight. Not having luggage, he had I stuffed his pockets with extra clothes. The young man followed a group of “clean dressed people” into a Quaker meeting house, where he soon fell asleep. The sleeping teenager with the lumpy clothes was Benjamin Franklin. Recently, he had run away from his brother James’s print shop in Boston. When he was 12, Franklin had signed a contract to work for his brother for nine years. But after enduring James’s nasty temper for five years, Franklin packed his pockets and left. In Philadelphia, Franklin quickly found work as a printer’s assistant. Within a few years, he had saved enough money to open his own print shop. His first success was a newspaper called the Pennsylvania Gazette. In 1732, readers of the Gazette saw an advertisement for Poor Richard’s Almanac. An almanac is a book, published annually, that contains information about weather predictions, the times of sunrises and sunsets, planting advice for farmers, and other useful subjects. According to the advertisement, Poor Richard’s Almanac was written by “Richard Saunders” and printed by “B. Franklin.” Nobody knew then that the author and printer were actually the same person. In addition to the usual information contained in almanacs, Franklin mixed in some proverbs, or wise sayings. Several of them are still remembered today. Here are three of the best- known: “A penny saved is a penny earned.” “Early to bed, early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise.” “Fish and visitors smell in three days.” Poor Richard’s Almanac sold so well that Franklin was able to retire at age 42.

    Clark College Area High School Graduates Class of 2006 One Year Follow-up Clark College Area High School Graduates Class of 2006 One Year Follow-up Executive Summary Each year, the Office of Planning and Effectiveness compiles a report based on a one year follow-up of high school graduates in the Clark College area. Information for graduates in the Class of 2006 is reported in two groups; Area 1, which makes up about 95% of all the high school students in the Clark College area, includes Battle Ground, Camas, Evergreen, La Center, Ridgefield, Vancouver, Washougal, and Woodland School Districts, and Area 2 which includes Glenwood, Klickitat, Lyle, Stevenson-Carson, Trout Lake, White Salmon and Wishram School Districts. Highlights of Class of 2006 ♦ A total of 4,717 students graduated from high school in the Clark College area in 2006. 4,503 graduates are from Area 1 214 graduates are from Area 2 ♦ Vancouver, Evergreen, and Battle Ground School District graduates make up 76% of the Clark College area graduates. ♦ 57% (2,693) of all Clark College area high school graduates attended college within one year after graduation. ♦ 48% of all graduates attending college within one year after graduation (1,282 of 2,693) enrolled at Clark College. ♦ 27% of all area high school graduates (1,282 of 4,717) attended Clark College within one year after graduation. ♦ Clark College was the number one destination for high school graduates from the area. ♦ 78% of graduates attended in-state schools and the remaining 22% attended school outside of Washington state. Clark College Area High School Graduates Class of 2006 One Year Follow-up A College Enrollment Study is conducted each year for the Washington State Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) by the Social and Economic Sciences Research Center at Washington State University, in cooperation with the Washington State Board for Community and Technical Colleges (SBCTC) and Washington’s public baccalaureate colleges and universities.
