How to Make an Egyptian Diorama http://www.wikihow.com/Make‐a‐Diorama A diorama is a small model of a real‐life scene that has lifelike details and a realistic background. Since we are reading, “The Curse of the Pharaohs”, you will be creating an Egyptian themed tomb as though you were an ancient Egyptian King or Queen. Steps for creating your Egyptian Tomb 1. Choose a tomb scene to re‐create in a shoebox. 2. Make sketches of how you want your diorama to look. Plan the front, back, sides, and top. Make the inside of the diorama look as deep and 3 dimensional as you can. Make a list of the things you will need to make your diorama. Use a variety of materials. 3. Make a base for the model out of a shoebox. Make sure your box is sturdy. 4. Find small figures to go along with your scene or make them out of clay, printouts, pipe cleaners, plasticine or other materials. Use your imagination. 5. Be creative. Anything you can find (cotton balls, leaves, twigs, etc.) will work. 6. Hang flying objects with clear string such as monofilament used for fishing line, if you have it. 7. Write a caption for your diorama. In your caption include the book you read and author. 8. You will also put an Egyptian‐styled Curse to warn others not to disturb your tomb. Tips • Put bigger items in the back, leaving the scene easy to see. • The most important object of your diorama should be centered or just a bit off center to draw the viewers attention to it first. -

About the Author Moustafa Gadalla was born in Cairo, Egypt in 1944. He gradu- ated from Cairo University with a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering in 1967. He immigrated to the U.S.A. in 1971 to practice as a licensed professional engineer and land surveyor. From his early childhood, Gadalla pursued his Ancient Egyp- tian roots with passion, through continuous study and research. Since 1990, he has dedicated and concentrated all his time to re- searching the Ancient Egyptian civilization. As an independent Egyptologist, he spends a part of every year visiting and studying sites of antiquities. Gadalla is the author of ten internationally acclaimed books. He is the chairman of the Tehuti Research Foundation—an interna- tional, U.S.-based, non-profit organization, dedicated to Ancient Egyptian studies. EGYPTIAN USHABTIU. THE QUAINT SOLUTION OF AN OLD PROBLEM. BY GEORGE H. RICHARDSON. (Honorary Secretary of the Egypt Exploration Fund.) THERE is a strange fascination in tracing the developments of civilizations other than our own. Perhaps in nothing do we discover the civilization of a people so much as in the treatment of their dead. There is a development in this treatment as in other things and we see the evolution of the life, thought and hopes of the people as we examine their cemeteries and their funeral rituals. What would our knowledge of ancient Egypt amount to were it not for the fact that the Egyptians so carefully buried their dead ? Those gigantic pyramids are but tombs built in cemeteries stretching over miles. The great sphinx was regarded as the guardian of the tomb of its maker Khafra, of the fourth dynasty, and over the cemetery at Gizeh. But at this time we are not dealing either with the ceme- teries or tombs, but rather with the small figures found in the tombs called ushabtiu. What are the ushabtiu? Ushabtiu (singular, ushabfi) was the name given by the Egyptians to the figures made of stone, wood, clay, alabaster, granite, bronze, painted and gilded limestone, and glazed faience, representing the god Osiris made in form of a mummy at times, but most often in the form of a workman. While the majority bear the strictly Osirian form, yet there are other forms, due, no doubt, to the skill of the maker seeking a fresh out- let. At times the figure is represented as mummified with only the head and face appearing. -
