ST, LOUIS: CHRISTIAN PUBLISHING COMPANY, 1"1- 18_92_, _ :, - ~_.- --- --_._- , , l...:).,)' l;.'q ,j,., Y' . ,,' " " " GENERAL INTRODUCTION. The continuous anLl growing interest so signally manifest in all departments of church work, the corresponLling facilities with which every enterprise is carried to success, together with the enthusiasm of numbers, and respectful recognition of their power on every hand, all combined have enabled the committee to present a Year Book of the Disciples of Christ that will challenge the respect and confiLlence of all concerneLl. Without claiming anything like perfection for a work depending so largely on the voluntary and gratuitous aid received, we can give assurance that the statistics are the latest attainable and being gathered mostly at the same time and under the inspiration of the Eleventh Ccnsus of the United States, in charge of Dr. Henry K. Carroll of Plainfieltl, N. J., special agent of the same, it is rcasonable to presume that these facts and figures are fuller and more nearly correct than any hitherto presenteLl in the history of the church. The sevcral state secretaries, with commendable zeal and persistence, in the face of much indifference among the churches, have made it possible to reach a record both helpful and hopeful . i for' the statistician in the future. In a few instances we have been obligcd to sup- plemcnt some features of State reports by estimates based on former data and, cannot therefore claim for these the accuracy so much desired. " This is practically a triennial Church Book rather than a Year Book and while a few of the better organized States may anticipate some features of the book by, , 'more recent reports, yet as a whole and for the whole country, this book will be ' ' 11 peculiarly valuable for years as a work of reference. In our effort to be concise, r the names of counties appearing in alphabetical order in Year Book of 1888 have been left out of these schedules, the number of each district in t~ny State thus, ,,, organized like Ohio, the local name of the church, together with name of corre- ,I·, spondent and post-office in all other States being deemed sufficiently explicit for all practical pllrposes. The Negro or African Churches, mostly in the southern part of our country, " appear in separate schedules when so reported to the committee and this, for pur- poses of special work III their behalf by the New Board of Negro Evangelization and Education, is proper and should be obscrved on this basis alone in the future. The average per member by States for local work and missions is as nearly cor- ': reet as can be made on the returns and estimates given and may awaken whole- I some emulation as well as suggest revision and improvement in most of the . States. Universities, colleges and other schools of learning have a fuller and more sat- isfactory showing in this book than in any hitherto published. So, also our peri- odical literature, the making of lIlany books and tracts, etc., etc., are pretty fully recognized here in a revised and amended list to date. The departmcnt of C. \V. B. ]VI. is ably represented by Miss Lois A. White, Cor- responding Secretary of the Board and Editor of the Missionary TiLlings, pub- lished at Indianapolis, Indiana. , For the paragraph statement of Sunday-school Normal work we are indebted to Bro. J. G. Waggoner, of Eureka, Ill., who has been identified with this move- mcnt from the beginning. \Vhatever excel1encies this book may contain are attri- butable largely to the faithful service of the State secrctaries, and the deficiencies on the other hand must be relegatcd to the indifference of local church oilicials " who failed to report promptly and aecuratcly the statistics necessary for a full and complete exhibt of our numbers and resources. ' We court and solicit adverse criticism from all thus inclined to the end that fuller and more accurate reports may be secllred hereafter, and therefore correc- tions should be freely made and forwarLled to anyone of the undersigned, , , especially to the Chairman and Secretary.
