Biography Carl Henry Eckart (1902-1973) received B.S. and M.S. degrees from Washington University and a Ph.D. in physics from Princeton in 1925. He joined the as an assistant professor of physics in 1928 and remained on the faculty until 1946, where he made substantial contributions to quantum physics and developed the Wigner-Eckart theorem. Eckart came to San Diego in 1942 to join the University of Division of War Research (UCDWR), where he worked on problems of underwater sound relevant to submarine warfare as assistant director and director of the program. In 1946, Eckart became a professor of geophysics at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) at UC San Diego, a position he held until 1971. He was also appointed the first director of the newly founded Marine Physical Laboratory (MPL) in 1946 (MPL became part of SIO in 1948). Eckart served a short term as the fourth director of Scripps until 1952, and went on to serve in a variety of important administrative positions at UC San Diego, including a term as Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs from 1965-67.
