Die übergeordnete Fragestellung lautet daher: Inwieweit tritt die vorhergesagte Wahrscheinlichkeit des Qimen Dunjia hinsichtlich Gesundheit und Krankheit ein oder nicht ein? Um diese übergeordnete Fragestellung zu beantworten, wurden die aufgenommenen Daten in Bezug auf folgende Partialfragen ausgewertet: 1. Wieviel Wahrheitsgehalt hat die prospektive, sowie die retrospektive Aussage des Qimen Dunjia zu Krankheitsverläufen? Dabei sind gemäß des Qimen Dunjia zwischen Verbesserung oder Verschlechterung im Sinne von „günstiger Prognose“ zu „ungünstiger Prognose“ zu unterscheiden. 2. Die vier Schriftzeichen 奇 (qi), 門 (men), 遁 (dun) und 甲 (jia) bedeuten nach dem einschlägigen Lexikon „Mathews Chinese English Dictionary“ zur klassischen chinesischen Schriftsprache Folgendes: 奇 (qi): „außergewöhnlich, seltsam, sonderbar, wunderlich, selten, unvermutet, überraschend“4 門 (men): „Tor, Tür“5 遁 (dun): „fliehen, flüchten, die Flucht ergreifen, sich verstecken, verschwinden“6 甲 (jia): „Schild, Schale, Panzer, Himmelsstamm Yang-Holz“7. Der Begriff 甲 (jia) ist äußerst doppeldeutig und lädt zu unterschiedlichen Interpretationen der Namensgestaltung der Technik ein! Die sich daraus ergebenden Binome bedeuten: 奇門 (qi men): „seltsame Tore“ oder „wunderbare Tore“8 遁甲 (dun jia): „verstecktes Yang-Holz“ oder „verborgenes Schild“.9 Aus diesen Begrifflichkeiten leitet sich meine sehr eng an die chinesische Vorlage gehaltene Übersetzung des Qimen Dunjia als „die wunderbaren Tore und das verborgene Yang-Holz“ ab. Andere, besonders englischsprachige Autoren geben Übersetzungen den Vorzug, die einen interpretatorischen oder spekulativen Gehalt haben. Masterthesis Dollhausen 2013:4 6 Gates Escaping Techniques“ oder auch „Mystical Doors“.10 Da das chinesische Binomen „Dunjia“ unterschiedliche Interpretationsmöglichkeiten anbietet, wird es oftmals auch sehr unterschiedlich übersetzt11, weshalb sehr wohl auch andere Übersetzungen, wie bei Ho Peng Yoke „die mystischen Tore und die verborgenen Schilder“, „Göttliche Tür, magische Rüstung“ oder „Wundersame Tür, Verstecktes Jia“12 zutreffend sein können. Gleichgültig, welcher Übersetzung man folgt, soll es nach dem Weltbild des Qimen Dunjia bestimmte Zeitpunkte und Orte im Zeit-Raum-Gefüge geben, die eine günstige oder ungünstige Wirkung auf den Menschen und sein Handeln haben und seine Absichten und Unternehmungen in der Welt begünstigen oder behindern. Anders ausgedrückt bedeutet dies, dass der Datensatz des Qimen Dunjia eine Aussage anbietet, mit deren richtigen Interpretation eine Einschätzung erfolgen kann, wie hoch die Wahrscheinlichkeit eines bestimmten Umstands zu einem bestimmten Augenblick ist, dass sich dieser innerhalb des befragten Kontext aus dem menschlichen Alltag vorteilhaft oder unvorteilhaft entwickelt.13 „Im Qimen Dunjia werden dabei Qualitäten der Zeit und Qualitäten des Raumes durch kybernetische Verknüpfungen zwischen den Basissystemen der traditionellen chinesischen Weltanschauung, wie beispielsweise die Trigramme und Hexagramme des Yi Jings, kalendarische Muster aus dem Wannianli14, Muster aus den fliegenden Sternen und aus dem Bazi Suanming15 beschrieben. Die den sehr verwinkelten Gedankengängen des Qimen Dunjia zugrundeliegende Vorstellung geht von ‚Löchern‘ im Raum-Zeit-Kontinuum (ausgedrückt durch die ‚mystischen Tore‘) und Hindernissen (ausgedrückt durch die ‚verborgenen Schilde‘) aus, deren Kenntnis strategische Vorteile verschafft. Es wird analysiert, ob eine menschliche Handlung oder Planung ‚im Hintergrund gestützt‘ oder ‚im Hintergrund einsam‘ ist, ob die Durchführung der Handlungen oder Planungen in der Zielsetzung ‚Substanz hat‘ oder ob sie ein ‚Schlag ins Leere‘ ist.“16 Daher wird das Qimen 10 Yap 2010:viii 11 vgl.     Journal of East Asian Studies 13 (2013), 207 –232 Explaining the Tribute System: Power, Confucianism, and War in Medieval East Asia Yuan-kang Wang In this article I remedy the popular misconception that the East Asian international system was hierarchical and non-egalitarian in history. I argue that the tribute system is mainly a function of power. Backed by power, Confucian norms and rules became the rules of the game in the system. Power asymmetry gave rise to hierarchy in foreign relations while power symmetry led to diplo - matic equality between great powers. East Asia during the tenth to the thirteenth centuries was a multistate system without a regional hegemon. In the Song-Liao international system (960–1125), due to power symmetry, the two great powers conducted their foreign policy on the basis of formal equality. In the Song-Jin international system (1127–1234), the weaker Song China became a Jin vassal state and acknowledged its inferior status in the Jin-derived hier - archy. In studying historical East Asia, Confucian rhetoric needs to be examined against power reality. Only by taking power seriously can we get a better understanding of the East Asian international system. China, by virtue of its supe - rior power and size, maintained order and kept the peace through the tribute system. During those times, China stood at the center of “all under Heaven”; neighboring polities sent tributary missions to China to symbolize their submission to the Chinese emperor.

Following the Muslim uprisings of the 1860s and 1870s in northwest China, officials of the Qing empire promoted the recovery and expansion of agricultural production. Their policies were framed by notions of natural profit, by their knowledge of agrarian technology, and by their concerns over the demographic and ecological crises of China proper. Scholar-officials sought to reap what they called the “profits of nature”—profits they believed to be intrinsic to specific arrangements of land, organisms, and labor—by deploying their knowledge of agriculture and by implementing policies of agrarian development. In arid landscapes inhabited largely by Turkic and Chinese Muslims, they replicated patterns of agricultural production from southern provinces of China, promoted the cultivation of crops imported from beyond local ecological boundaries, and facilitated Han colonization. These efforts were attempts to forge new, if sometimes subtle, environmental and demographic connections between China proper and the northwest frontiers. Based upon a wide range of published sources and archival documents from Beijing and Urumqi, this dissertation examines the intellectual background and agrarian practices of Zuo Zongtang (1812-1885), the leading agent of Qing agrarian expansion in the northwest in the late nineteenth century.
