The Genus Atomosia Macquart (Diptera: Asilidae) in North America North of Mexico

(e-mail: [email protected]) Abstract.-Atomosia arkansensis, new species, is described from specimens collected in blackland prairie in southern Arkansas, and Atomosia tibialis is reported the first time from North America north of Mexico. A new key to Nearctic Atomosia species is presented. Atomosia melanopogon and A. mucida are noted to be sexually dimorphic. In addition to more standard characters, the open or closed condition of cell r5 and the length of the pedicel and flagellum relative to the length of the scape are· used to distinguish similar species. Lectotypes are designated for Atomosia mucida, Atomosia puella, and Atomosia sayii. Atomosia echemon is synonymized with A. puella (new synonymy), and A. mucidoides is synonymized with A. sayii (new synonymy). Invertebrate generalist predators are ubiquitous and play a major role in food-web dynamics. Molecular gut content analysis (MGCA) has become a popular means to assess prey ranges and specificity of cryptic arthropods in the absence of direct observation. While this approach has been widely used to study predation on economically important taxa (i.e., pests) in agroecosystems, it is less frequently used to study the broader trophic interactions involving generalist predators in natural communities such as the diverse and threatened coastal sage scrub communities of Southern California. Here, we employ DNA metabarcoding-based MGCA and survey the taxonomically and ecologically diverse prey range of Phymata pacifica Evans, a generalist flower-associated ambush bug (Hemiptera: Reduviidae). We detected predation on a wide array of taxa including beneficial pollinators, potential pests, and other predatory arthropods. The success of this study demonstrates the utility of MGCA in natural ecosystems and can serve as a model for future diet investigations into other cryptic and underrepresented communities. Baker and Fischer: A Taxonomic and Ecological Study of the Asilidae of Michigan THE GREAT LAKES ENTOMOLOGIST A TAXONOMIC AND ECOLOGIC STUDY OF THE ASlLlDAE OF MICHIGAN Norman T. ~akerland Roland L. ~ischer~ ABSTRACT Seventy-two species of Asilidae have been recorded from Michigan. An additional seven which may occur are included. Keys to subfamilies, genera and species are given. Two subfamilies and twenty-five genera are represented. A discussion of specific identification, habitat, and distribution is given where possible. The Laphria canis complex, index complex, and aeatus complex are discussed. One new species, Laphria calvescenta is described. Laphria disparella has been raised from synonymy. Machimus virginicus was removed from Asilus sensu-latu and placed in the genus Machimus. -

CURRAN Descriptions of twenty new species of Asilidae from Arizona, Panama, and Brazil are given in the following pages, and in most cases keys to the genera are presented. In some cases, owing to the incompleteness of descriptions, it has been found impossible to include all the species in the key, and as a result, reference to the older descriptions will be neces- sary before deciding that forms which do not trace out satisfactorily are new. The types of the new species are in The American Museum of Natural History. Deromyni litoralis, new species Black, the legs mostly reddish; thorax gray pollinose with three blackish vitte; abdomen brownish black, with broad gray fasciae. Length, 16 to 20 mm. MAIE.-Head densely whitish pollinose, the front and occiput grayish except along the orbits. Hair and bristles white, the ocellar, postocellar, and palpal bristles black; second antennal segment with black, bristly hair. Face a little longer than wide. Palpi shining black. Antennae reddish or brownish red, the upper surface more or less broadly brown; third segment slightly longer than the basal two seg- nients combined, with three or four very fine pale yellow hairs basally near the upper edge of the inner surface. Proboscis shining black. Thorax gray pollinose, the mesonotum with brownish-yellow tinge. The median vitta abbreviated posteriorly, divided by a slender, paler, median line, the outer vittxe abbreviated in front and behind and narrowly divided at the suture. -
