He acted on various Government commissions of enquiry, such as the inquiry into the condition of the poorer classes in Ireland, the commission to examine the state of Irish education and the commission to inquire into the troubled state of Malta. In 1838 he became a poor-law commissioner, following his father's resignation from the position. He married Lady Maria Theresa Lister in 1844. In 1847, he entered Parliament as Liberal M.P. for Herefordshire. The General Election of July 1852 saw him lose his seat. He became editor of the Edinburgh Review, 1852-1855. On his father's death, he succeeded him as the M.P. for Radnor boroughs, and became Chancellor of the Exchequer in Viscount Palmerston's first administration (1855-1858), and later Home Secretary and Secretary for War in Palmerston's second administration (1859-1865). He died in 1863. The famine is often remembered and mourned as the tragic but unavoidable result of natural circumstances, and the blight that swept through the potato crop year after year is attributed as the sole cause of starvation. This misrepresentation of the famine’s history ignores the role of the British colonizer state in establishing conditions in Ireland that led to famine and exacerbating the suffering of the Irish through neglect. This paper explores the role of the British colonial government in Ireland in causing and amplifying the negative impacts of the Irish potato famine. One million people—roughly one-eighth of Ireland’s Lewis 3 population—perished of starvation between 1845 and 1848, and another two million were forced to flee the country in search of a safer life elsewhere.1 Those who remained piled into disease-ridden, overcrowded workhouses or scraped out a living on meager plots of land. Too frequently, the famine is portrayed by historians as the inevitable outcome of population increase and unfortunate natural circumstances. In reality, the Great Hunger was the result of British conquest and subsequent neglect.

Terrell, Dean of the Robert B. Toulouse School of Graduate Studies Caernarven-Smith, Patricia. Gladstone and the Bank of England: A Study in Mid- Victorian Finance, 1833-1866. Master of Arts (History), May 2007, 378 pp., 11 tables, bibliography, 275 titles. The topic of this thesis is the confrontations between William Gladstone and the Bank of England. These confrontations have remained a mystery to authors who noted them, but have generally been ignored by others. This thesis demonstrates that Gladstone’s measures taken against the Bank were reasonable, intelligent, and important for the development of nineteenth-century British government finance. To accomplish this task, this thesis refutes the opinions of three twentieth-century authors who have claimed that many of Gladstone’s measures, as well as his reading, were irrational, ridiculous, and impolitic. My primary sources include the Gladstone Diaries, with special attention to a little-used source, Volume 14, the indexes to the Diaries. The day-to-day Diaries and the indexes show how much Gladstone read about financial matters, and suggest that his actions were based to a large extent upon his reading. In addition, I have used Hansard’s Parliamentary Debates and nineteenth-century periodicals and books on banking and finance to understand the political and economic debates of the time.

Yet the shadow cast by the apparent ease with which the United States rose to global dominance after 1940 has masked the complexity and uncertainty inherent in what turned out to be the last decades of the British Empire. Historians of British international history have long recognised that the 1920s were a period of adjustment to a new world, not simply the precursor to the disastrous (in hindsight) 1930s. As late as the eve of the Second World War, prominent colonial nationalists lamented that the end of Empire remained impossible to foresee.     Sociology Study, July 2016, Vol. 6, No. 7, 436‐447 D doi: 10.17265/2159‐5526/2016.07.002 DAVID PUBLISHING Clothing the Other: The Use of Fashion in Pursuit of a British Imperial Utopia Ibtisam Ahmeda Abstract The British Raj provides a deep and rich case to study the implementation(s) of real‐world political utopias. It fits with the definition of political utopian theory wherein the system was a reactionary attempt to solve contemporary systemic problems. As an imperial project aimed at civilising the native population and creating a good life for both them and the British officials stationed there, it is an embodiment of the utopian quest for an ideal and perfectible society. In this paper, the author examines how this attempt at utopia extended into the private sphere through the impact the British Raj had on gender through clothing. Gender was specifically seen as an embodiment of cultural, national, and even religious values, which provided a powerful tool for a narrative of the colonial Self against the pre‐ or anti‐colonial Other. Clothing is a powerful inherent representation of identity and the narrative of the Raj, as well as the counter‐narrative of independence, relying heavily on shaping notions of masculinity and femininity by controlling acceptability in clothing.
