ZUR ANWENDBARKEIT DER KORPUS-ANALYSE ALS MITTEL DES POPMUSIKVERSTEHENS André Doehring Isfahan (Iran) Als sich der iranische Cousin an seine Zeit in Deutschland erinnert, kommt ihm auch die Musik in den Sinn: »Modern Talking, ja! Das ist [Man beachte das Präsens!] schöne Musik, man bekommt gute Laune und kann dazu tan- zen! Und Dieter Bohlen! Ein sehr guter Musiker, der ›es‹ geschafft hat.« Mortezar ist nicht der erste, der mir in Iran begegnet und von den Vorzügen dieser deutschen Band berichtet. In Teheran legten Taxifahrer Modern Talking-Kassetten ein, sobald sich die Fahrgäste als Deutsche zu erkennen gaben, und dies bereits vor vielen Jahren, zu einer Zeit, als das Hören westlicher Popmusik im öffentlichen Raum noch empfindliche Strafen nach sich ziehen konnte. Heute ist dies ein wenig anders: Der Verwandte, der uns am nächsten Tag zu einer weiteren Einladung fährt, präsentiert uns bei ge- öffneten Autofenstern stolz eine Playlist sämtlicher Modern Talking-Hits: »Tolle Musik, nicht wahr!« Gießen (Deutschland) Fassungslosigkeit (»Das ist nicht dein Ernst!«), Besorgnis (»Bist du lebens- müde?«), bisweilen auch Häme (»Dann mal viel Vergnügen!«) kennzeichnen die Reaktionen von Kollegen und Freunden, wenn ich erzähle, dass ich an einer Korpus-Analyse aller Songs der ersten sechs Modern Talking-Alben ar- beite. Diese exemplarisch zitierten Aussagen entstammen einem Arbeits- journal, das ich während der Arbeit führte und das außerdem manche Selbstbeobachtung enthält: etwa die zu Beginn der Arbeit auffällig lange Phase der Überwindung meines Widerwillens, sich analytisch mit dieser Musik auseinanderzusetzen oder meine anschließende eigentümliche Faszi- nation für den Gegenstand, die zwischen Freude — auch des Wiederent- 119 ANDRÉ DOEHRING deckens — und Unbehagen pendelt.

During his time with Modern Talking, he enjoyed countless chart successes that spread his fame to almost every corner of the earth. “You’re my heart, you’re my soul”, for example, reached number 1 in 81 countries. Worldwi- de CD sales of Modern Talking and of Thomas Anders’ solo works have now topped the 125 million mark. Thomas Anders has received more than 420 gold and platinum discs or CD’s and numerous awards to mark his artistic achievements. The latter have included the “Bam- bi”, the “Goldene Europa”, the “Goldene Kamera”, the “ECHO”, the “World Music Award”, the Golden and Silver “Bravo-Otto”, the “Golden Lion” from Radio Luxembourg and many more besides. Despite such triumphant success, Thomas Anders is a man who is constantly on the look out for the next challenge. A serious and professional entertainer, he does not know the me- aning of the word stagnation. The worldwide success he enjoyed with Modern Talking was followed by the release of many solo albums in Germany and abroad. His most recent solo pop album “STRONG” sold over 1.000.000 copies in Russia alone and was awarded a platinum disc. The video for “Stay with me”, a track taken from this album, was one of the most spectacular of Thomas Anders’ career and saw him perform the role of James Bond in true 007 style.
