The last comprehensive list (Barrio-Amorós 2009c) included a total of 333 species, while the current catalogue lists 387 species (370 anurans, 10 caecilians, and seven salamanders), including 28 species not yet described or properly identified. Fifty species and four genera are added to the previous list, 25 species are deleted, and 47 experienced nomenclatural changes. -

Herpetology Notes, volume 12: 577-585 (2019) (published online on 31 May 2019) Herpetofaunal checklist for six pilot protected areas in Trinidad and Tobago Renoir J. Auguste1,* Abstract. A herpetofaunal inventory for six areas under consideration for protected status in Trinidad and Tobago revealed 67 species: 25 anurans, four chelonians, one crocodilian, and 37 squamates. The species recorded represent about 70% of the country’s amphibians and 50% of the reptiles. Survey techniques for documenting the herpetofauna within the areas, included visual and audio encounter surveys, spotlight surveys, and beach patrols. The results suggest that the six pilot protected areas hold locally endemic and globally threatened species. Improved conservation strategies and management plans for the country’s herpetofauna can be based on this report. Keywords. E-mail: [email protected]. Abstract Observations on the courtship behavior and nesting in Phyllomedusa venusta (Anura: Phyllomedusidae) from a seasonally dry forest in Colombia. I investigated the reproductive behavior of the poorly known leaf frog Courtship, amplexus, and nesting were observed during the rainy season in an ephemeral pool surrounded by forest. Based on the behavior of a single, amplectant pair, it seems likely that physical stimulation may play a role in courtship in this leaf frog that shows little vocalization. A second amplectant pair formed a nest, with leaves surrounding the clutch in a funnel. Both ends of the nest were plugged with empty jelly egg capsules, which also were dispersed throughout the egg mass. A separate spawn was collected, containing 390 viable eggs. By wrapping eggs in leaves, and depositing water in empty egg capsules in the egg mass and jelly plugs, the frogs doubtless protect developing embryos from desiccation, an important adaptation for leaf-nesting among phyllomedusids. E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Nest structure, incubation and hatching in the Trinidadian leaf-frog Phyllomedusa trinitatis (Anura: Hylidae). New findings on nesting and hatching are reported for the leaf-nesting tree frog Phyllomedusa trinitatis. Nest height and leaf cover (one or many leaves; well or poorly covered) were very variable. Contrary to a previous report, eggless jelly capsules were scattered amongst the eggs, with substantial jelly plugs located above and below the egg clutch. Plugs were composed of capsules embedded in a matrix of somewhat different composition. The upper plug acted as a barrier to water entry. Contrary to previous reports, isolated eggs could develop in aquatic media, the later stage on entry the better: aeration and salt composition of the water influenced this ability. Egg clutches developed equally well whether the covering leaves were alive or dead. Single eggs incubated in water hatched prematurely; when placed in water, eggs near hatching stage hatched within a short time; such eggs on a dry or damp substrate did not hatch till much later.
