The Challenge of the Quran [English ] The Challenge of the Quran [English ] [ ] (In the light of the Glorious Qurân and the Sunnah ) By : Dr . Bilal Philips ! "!#$ %$ !"# The Challenge of the Quran Descriptio n: The Qur'anic challenge to produce a work similar to it, and the inability of its contemporaries to meet it. By Dr. Bilal Philips The Quran is not only unique in the way in which it presents its subject matter, but it is also unique in that it is a mir acle itself. By the term “miracle,” we mean the performance of a supernatural or extraordinary event which cannot be duplicated by humans. It has been documented that Prophet Muhammad, may God praise him, challenged the Arabs to produce a literary work of a similar caliber as the Quran, but they were unable to do so in spite of their well -known eloquence and literary powers. The challenge to reproduce the Quran was presented to the Arabs and mankind in three stages: l. The Whole Quran In the Quran, Go d commanded the Prophet to challenge all of creation to create a book of the stature of the Quran: “Say: ‘If all mankind and the jinn would come together to produce the like of this Quran, they could not produce its like even though they exerted all and th eir strength in aiding one another.’” (Quran 17:88) 2. Ten Chapters Next, God made the challenge ostensibly easier by asking those who denied its divine origin to imitate even ten chapters of the Quran: “Or do the y say that he has invented it? Say (t o them), ‘Bring ten invented chapters like it, and call (for help) on whomever you can besides God, if you are truthful.” (Quran 11:13) 3. One Chapter This final challenge was to produce even a single chapter to match what is in the Quran, whose sho rtest chapter, al-Kawthar, consists of only three verses: “And if you all are in doubt about what I have revealed to My servant, bring a single chapter like it, and call your witnesses besides God if you are truthful.” (Quran 2:23) These challenges were not just empty words with no one caring to prove them wrong. Prophet Muhammad’s call to monotheism, to the abolition of idolatry in all its forms, and to the equality of slaves and their masters threatened the whole socio -economic framework of Mecca society in general, and the 2 position of the ruling Quraishee tribe from which the Prophet came in particular. Mecca, the trading center of Arabia, as well as its spiritual center, desperately wanted to stop the spread of Is lam. Yet all that the Prophet’s opponent s had to do to crush the movement was to make up a single chapter like any one of those which the Prophet and his followe rs were reciting to the people. A number of Quraishee orators and poets tried to imitate the Quran, but they failed. They then resorted to offering him vast amounts of wealth, the position of king over them, and the most noble and beautiful of their women in exchange for his promise to stop inviting people to Islam. He responded to them by reciting the first thirteen verses of Chapter Fus silat, until they asked him to stop .[1] The Quraish also resorted to torturing their slaves and relatives who had embraced Islam in a vain attempt to ca use them to revert to paganism. Later they organized an economic boycott against the Prophet his followe rs and the members of his clan, Banu Hashim , in an attempt to starve them into submission. But ev en this plan eventually failed. Finally, they plotted to kill him in his home by sending armed young men from each of the clans of Quraish in order that the gu ilt of his murder be shared by all the clans, making revenge by the Prophet’s clan impossible. However, God enabled the Prophet and his followers to flee Mecca and join a new band of converts who had arisen among the tribes of a ci ty to the north called Y athrib. Islam spread rapidly through the clans of Yathrib, and within a year Musl ims became the city’s majority. Prophet Muhammad was then made the ruler, and the name of the city was changed to Medina an-Nabi (The City of the Prophet may God praise him), which was then shortened to “Medina.” Over the next eight years, the clans of Mecca and its neighboring lands mounted a series of unsuccessful battle campaigns against the emerging Muslim state in Medina, which ended with the Muslim invasion of Mecca itsel f. All of this bloodshed could have been avoided if only the Quraish and their allies had been able to produce a mere three lines of poetry or flowing prose similar to the shortest chapter of the Quran. Hence, there can be no doubt about the inimitability of the Quran’s literary style, about the miracle of its rhyme and the marvel of its rhythm. It has been suggested that the inimitability of the Quran is not necessarily unique, for great English poets like Shakespeare, Chaucer, or great poets in any lang uage tend to have distinctly unique styles which set them a part from their contemporaries. However, if, for example, some leading poet of today were to make an in -depth study of Shakespeare’s writings and write a sonnet in Shakespeare’s style in old ink and on old paper, then claim that he had discovered a lost poem of Shakespeare’s, the literary world would probably accept this c laim, even after careful study. Thus, even the greatest of poets could be imitated; no matter how unique his style was, just as t he famo us painters have been imitated. [In fact, some English scholars consider much of 3 what has been attributed to Shakespeare to have been written by his contemporary, Christopher Marlowe.] The Quran, however, is way above this level, as attempts to forg e chapters have been made throughout the ages, yet none has withstood close scrutiny. And, as was mentioned before, the incentive to imitate the Quran was more intense during the time of its revelation when literally skills were at their peak than at any other time, yet there was no successful attempt. ootnotes: [1] Collected by al-Hakim , al-Bayhaqee, Aboo Ya’laa and Ibn Hishaam, and declared Hasan by Ibrahi m al-’Alee in Sahih as-Seerah an-Nabaweeyah, p.64. 4.

  • Running Like Zebras by Edip Yuksel
Running Like Zebras by Edip Yuksel PREFACE This book contains a debate between Mr. Edip Yuksel, a proponent of the Quran's numerical structure based on the number 19, and its detractor and skeptic "par- excellence" Mr. Daniel (Abdulrahman) Lomax. The actual polemic took place on an Internet computer bulletin board, where Mr. Lomax has for the past several years posted his refutations of the Quran's mathematical structure. The original work of decoding the Quran's mathematical pattern based on the number 19 (found in sura 74 verse 30, a chapter entitled "The Hidden") was done by the late Dr. Rashad Khalifa in the seventies and eighties. His work was initially welcomed in the Muslim world, until he arrived at the unavoidable conclusion that Muslims should follow the Quran, and the Quran alone, as a source of religious guidance. This was too hard for the power that be in traditional Islam (the religious scholars) to swallow. Dr. Khalifa's works were eventually banned in the Muslim countries (he was murdered in 1990), and ideas similar to his were either suppressed or hotly refuted. In a sense, then, the debate contained in this book is an ongoing struggle between people who follow the Quran alone and those who follow hadith, sunna and consensus of the religious scholars and clerics. A debate between those who are satisfied with God's revelation and those who uphold religious traditions based on man-made dogmas. A polemic between the supporters of the true message of Muhammad and the supporters of the man-made sayings attributed to the man.

Enormous contribution in the form of leading articles, research papers of high standard and com prehensive books regarding its majestic teachings, whether pro and against^ from the side of the Muslims or non-Muslims, provide an overt proof for its extra ordinary importance, un- comparable to any manifestation of human science and intellect. The teachings of the holy Book being revolutionary in its character, provide a complete guidance to the human being for adopting 'the right path as proposed by the Omnipotent God for a Successful life in this world and the world Hereafter. This aspect of study of the holy Quran is purely religious. The preservance oE the Revelation, its specific arrangement, majestic presentation, omission and addition, rhyme and rhythm andjabove all, its miraculous character, both from the point of view of ideology and literature, testify for its being a marvellous literary monument, :fer above in excellence» in com- prision to any human endeavour , irrespective of age and place. See comment- ary of al Baqarah : 164 for the "creation of the heavens and the earth." This verse repudiates the theory of duality of old Persian theology, preached by the Magians, that light and darkness are eternal. They are both creatures of the Lord of the worlds. Adala, here, means to hold something as equal to something else. As the ultimate cause of every cre- ated thing, in the universe, is Allah, no reasonable person, except a dis- believer, can set up any of His creatures as equal, particularly when He cherishes and loves His creatures. To confound the eternal being of the true God with false ideas and superstitions is shirk (polytheism), which must be punished. He has created light and darkness to help man to dis- tinguish the true from the false. He alone should be praised and glorified. ???? ??????? ?????????? ???? ????? ????? ?????? ??????? ? ???????? ???????? ???????? ? ????? ???????? ??????????? {2} [Pooya/Ali Commentary 6:2] Allah created Adam from clay, and through him He brought into be- ing the whole mankind. • LESSON 7 – Baqarah 26 – 29
LESSON 7 – Baqarah 26 – 29 In the last lesson we talked about the miracle of the Quran and how the Arabs were unable to meet the challenge which the Quran put forth to them. Allah said, bring forth one chapter like this Quran, if you doubt it then bring forth even one chapter like it. And which was the chapter that was put forth in that challenge? Al Kawthar, it is the shortest surah in the Quran. So when Allah challenged them he brought the shortest surah to challenge. The Arabs could not meet the challenge that Allah had set for them, it was impossible for them to do this, so because they could not meet the challenge of the Quran they tried to find other ways in which they could not accept what the Quran was saying, other excuses to not accept what was in the Quran. One of the excuses they used was to say that the Quran mentions insignificant things or very small things. This is one of the tactics they used so they would not have to accept what was in the Quran. It was simply excuses, and it is in this context we are going to look at the next verses. Iban Abbas companion of the Prophet saw, he said about this ayet that when Allah made the two examples of what the hypocrites were liked, the people said, Allah is to high and exalted to make metaphors, and then ayet 26 was revealed. It was also said that when Allah revealed the ayet about the fly, the people said, do you see that Allah mentions flies and spiders in the Quran that he revealed upon Muhammed saw, how could he possible do that? Thus this ayet was revealed.

J. Arberry, who gave it the title of (Koran Translated). The author, Dr. Haithm Saab, a language professor, showed great interest in Arberry’s work as he believed that it was and still is one of the best translation made by a non-Muslim scholar in English, of the Holy Quran. The paper covered many aspects of the translation and came out with valuable recommendations. My translation to this paper is to complete the role of the original author’s work, to address another group of audience in their own English language. The author was able to clarify some linguistic and technical points about Arberry’s translation; and he made corrections of some errors which were/are–intentionally or unintentionally made by the translator. The author handled the topic with professional skills to explain where Arberry erred and he made suggestions that can add great value to A.J.Arberry’s original translation (Koran Translated) which was published by Oxford University Press in 1964.

The Miraculous Quran (11 of 11): A Challenge for Humanity (English) -11 ﻣﻌﺠﺰة اﻟﻘﺮآن : ﲢﺪﻳﻪ اﻟﺒﴩ ( إﻧﺠﻠﻴﺰي ) Jamaal Ad-Deen Zarabozo ﲨﺎل اﻟﺪﻳﻦ زاراﺑﻮزو http://www.islamreligion.com The Linguistic Miracle of the Quran There is another important aspect that Muslim scholars have traditionally considered the greatest miraculous aspect of the Quran, this is the linguis- tic miracle. Unfortunately, though, before becoming a Muslim (and even afterwards), I had no way to truly appreciate this topic. I could only read what some scholars had written about the language and beauty of the Qu- ran. For example, John Naish wrote: The Quran in its original Arabic dress has a seductive beauty and charm of its own. Couched in concise and ex- alted style, its brief pregnant sen- tences, often rhymed, poses an ex- pressive force and explosive energy which is extremely difficult to con- vey by literal word for word transla- tion.1 Similarly, Arberry yearned for his earlier days when he would hear the Quran being recited during Ramadhan in Egypt.2 I actually had no access to hearing the Quran being recited and therefore did not know what a mov- ing experience it is. Furthermore, without knowledge of the Arabic lan- guage, the impression of the English translations could not possibly be like that of the original Arabic. However, I must discuss this miraculous here, however briefly, because it is truly one of the most amazing aspects of the Quran. Again, traditionally, Muslim scholars have considered the linguistic mi- racle of the Quran as perhaps the most important miraculous aspect of the Quran—and it is definitely the one that had the most influence at the time of the Prophet Muhammad, may the mercy and blessings of God be upon him.

An Unmet Challenge ﻤﺤﺪي ِﻤﻟﻌﺠﺰ English [ إﻠ - ] www.islamreligion.com website مﻮﻗﻊ دﻳﻦ ﻤﻹﺳﻼم 2013 - 1434 An Unmet Challenge The Evidence Initially, the Meccan un- believers said Muhammad is the author of the Quran. God responded to them: “Or do they say, ‘He himself has composed this [message]’? No, but they are not willing to believe! But then, [if they deem it the work of a mere mortal,] let them produce another discourse like it - if what they say be true! [Or do they deny the existence of God implicitly by denying the fact of His revelation?] Have they them- selves been created without anything - or were they, per- chance, their own creators?” (Quran 52:33-35) First, God challenged them to produce ten chapters like the Quran: “Or they may say, ‘He forged it,’ Say, ‘Bring ye then ten suras forged, like unto it, and call (to your aid) whomsoever you can, other than God! - If you speak the truth!’ If then they answer not your (call), know you that this revelation is sent down with the knowledge of God, and that there is no god but He! Will you then submit (to Islam)?” (Quran 11:13-14) But, when they were unable to meet the challenge of ten chapters, God reduced it to a single chapter: “And if you are in doubt about what We have sent down on Our slave, then produce a surah thereof and call upon your witnesses other than God, if you should be 2 truthful. But if you do not – and you will never be able to – then fear the Fire whose fuel is men and stones, pre- pared for the unbelievers.” (Quran 2:23-24) Finally, God foretold their eternal failure to meet the di- vine challenge: “Say: ‘If all mankind and all jinn 1 would come to- gether to produce the like of this Quran, they could not produce its like even though they were to exert all their strength in aiding one another!’” (Quran 17:88) The Prophet of Islam said: “Every Prophet was given ‘signs’ because of which people believed in him.
