Heraldry in the Republic of Macedonia (1991-2019)

In this paper, we will consider heraldry in the Republic of Macedonia, understood by the multitude of coats of arms, and armorial knowledge and art. The paper covers the period from independence until the name change (1991-2019). It co- vers the state coat of arms of the Republic of Macedonia especially the 2009 change. Special atten- tion is given to the development of the municipal heraldry, including the legal system covering the subject. Also personal heraldry developed in 21 century is considered. The paper covers the de- velopment of heraldry and the heraldic thought in the given period, including the role of the Macedonian Heraldic Society and its journal Macedonian Herald in development of theoretic and practical heraldry, as well as its Register of arms and the Macedonian Civic Heraldic System. Introduction The Republic of Macedonia became independent from the Socialist Federative Re- public of Yugoslavia with the Referendum of 8 September 1991. The Democratic Federal Macedonia was formed during the first session of the Anti-Fascist Assembly for the Na- tional Liberation of Macedonia (ASNOM) on 2 August 1944 (it later became the People’s Republic of Macedonia, a federal unit of the Federal People’s Republic of Yugoslavia). -
Catalan Modernism and Vexillology
Catalan Modernism and Vexillology Sebastià Herreros i Agüí Abstract Modernism (Modern Style, Modernisme, or Art Nouveau) was an artistic and cultural movement which flourished in Europe roughly between 1880 and 1915. In Catalonia, because this era coincided with movements for autonomy and independence and the growth of a rich bourgeoisie, Modernism developed in a special way. Differing from the form in other countries, in Catalonia works in the Modern Style included many symbolic elements reflecting the Catalan nationalism of their creators. This paper, which follows Wladyslaw Serwatowski’s 20 ICV presentation on Antoni Gaudí as a vexillographer, studies other Modernist artists and their flag-related works. Lluís Domènech i Montaner, Josep Puig i Cadafalch, Josep Llimona, Miquel Blay, Alexandre de Riquer, Apel·les Mestres, Antoni Maria Gallissà, Joan Maragall, Josep Maria Jujol, Lluís Masriera, Lluís Millet, and others were masters in many artistic disciplines: Architecture, Sculpture, Jewelry, Poetry, Music, Sigillography, Bookplates, etc. and also, perhaps unconsciously, Vexillography. This paper highlights several flags and banners of unusual quality and national significance: Unió Catalanista, Sant Lluc, CADCI, Catalans d’Amèrica, Ripoll, Orfeó Català, Esbart Català de Dansaires, and some gonfalons and flags from choral groups and sometent (armed civil groups). Civic Flag Policy Date Authorised by Council: 10 March 2021 Commencement Date: 11 March 2021 Review Date (4 years from authorised date): March 2025 Responsible Department Governance and Strategy This policy has been adopted by Council. 1 INTRODUCTION The flying of flags is a visible symbol of respect and acknowledgement. Every sovereign nation flies its own national flag as the symbol of the country, of the people, of the ideals and beliefs that those people live by and proclaim. Flying the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags demonstrates Council’s recognition of First Nation peoples and demonstrates our respect and acknowledgement. The flags that are to be flown permanently pursuant to this policy are the Australian National Flag, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Flags and the Moreland City Council Flag. The Moreland City Council Flag will be substituted with other flags of significance as required by the Community Flag Schedule. Flags flown in accordance with the Community Flag Schedule will be flown in accordance with the relevant protocol and Council resolution. 2 CONTEXT 2.1 Alignment • The Flags Act 1953 • Australian National Flag protocol 3 OBJECTIVES To clearly outline Council’s approach to the flying of the flags at Council’s Town Halls and other facilities and to establish a mechanism to consider requests for flying of flags of significant to the Moreland community. 4 POLICY DETAILS 4.1 AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL FLAG The Australian National Flag is the chief national symbol and was raised for the first time on 3 September 1901 in the presence of the first Australian Prime Minister, the Hon. -

:: SCAN | journal of media arts culture :: Scan Journal vol 2 number 1 april 2005 "I’d rather take Methadone than Ken Done": Branding Sydney in the 1980s Susie Khamis Introduction From tourist bureaus and urban developers to the Bicentennial Authority and the ALP, there was a short period in the 1980s when the image of “Ken Done’s” Sydney was both economically viable and culturally resonant. His signature motif of the Sydney Harbour Bridge — “a riot of dashing colours and blunt brush strokes” (Gibson and Connell 2001:292) — became so widely reproduced that, in some circles, it came to signify more than just Done’s style. It became a metonym for Australia itself, portraying the brash optimism and hedonism of the 1980s. However, as a recent advertising campaign suggests, this image of Sydney had a finite appeal, convenient only to the extent that Done’s particular association with Sydney had currency. An examination of this period thus reveals two things: that Sydney exists as a concept as much as a place, and is therefore elastic enough to inspire any number of ideals and attributes; and that, in turn, these ideals and attributes compete in a marketplace of sorts, valued in accordance with market interests and connotative effects. This paper will apply these observations to a discussion of Done’s work, both how it constituted Sydney, and how it was then appropriated by those that had vested interests in the image(s) of Sydney. In short, this paper will consider this aspect of Done’s work in order to demonstrate the politics of image management. -

Household names, often with preserved archives, have had their company stories written by academics, journalists, and former senior employees. Broader national studies have analysed the role that big business has played in a country’s economic development. While sometimes this work has alleged oppressive anti-competitive behaviour, much has been written from a more positive perspective. Business historians, influenced by the pioneering work of Alfred Chandler, have implicated the ‘visible hand’ of large scale enterprise in national economic development particularly through their competitive strategies and modernised governance structures, which have facilitated innovation, the integration of national markets, and the growth of professional bureaucracies. While our understanding of the role of big business has been enriched by an aggregation of case studies, some writers have sought to study its impact through economy-wide lenses. This has typically involved constructing sets of the largest 100 or 200 companies at periodic benchmark years through the twentieth century, and then analysing their characteristics – such as their size, industrial location, growth strategies, and market share - and how they changed over time. -
