6JAN201605190975 Fiscal Year 2015 Annual Financial Report And Shareholder Letter 10DEC201511292957 10DEC201400361461 Dear Shareholders, The Force was definitely with us this year! Fiscal 2015 was another triumph across the board in terms of creativity and innovation as well as financial performance. For the fifth year in a row, The Walt Disney Company delivered record results with revenue, net income and earnings per share all reaching historic highs once again. It’s an impressive winning streak that speaks to our continued leadership in the entertainment industry, the incredible demand for our brands and franchises, and the special place our storytelling has in the hearts and lives of millions of people around the world. All of which is even more remarkable when you remember that Disney first started entertaining audiences almost a century ago. The world certainly looks a lot different than it did when Walt Disney first opened shop in 1923, and so does the company that bears his name. Our company continues to evolve with each generation, mixing beloved characters and storytelling traditions with grand new experiences that are relevant to our growing global audience. Even though we’ve been telling our timeless stories for generations, Disney maintains the bold, ambitious heart of a company just getting started in a world full of promise. And it’s getting stronger through strategic acquisitions like Pixar, Marvel and Lucasfilm that continue to bring new creative energy across the company as well as the constructive disruptions of this dynamic digital age that unlock new opportunities for growth. Our willingness to challenge the status quo and embrace change is one of our greatest strengths, especially in a media market rapidly transforming with each new technology or consumer trend.

9DEC201416063963 Fiscal Year 2014 Annual Financial Report And Shareholder Letter 14JAN201515462037 Dear Shareholders, From the first day in this job I’ve understood what an honor and responsibility it is to be Disney’s CEO; but over the last nine years I’ve come to truly appreciate what an unbelievable privilege it is to lead this phenomenal company. It’s always been my belief that, once the people who work here believed in their own greatness, there was virtually nothing we couldn’t accomplish. And they have proven me right time and time again. Given our track record of achievement and the incredibly dynamic times we live in, I can honestly say I’ve never been more optimistic or enthusiastic about what lies ahead for The Walt Disney Company. We just delivered the best results in the history of this legendary company, marking our fourth fiscal year of record performance in a row, and our stock price has recently been trading higher than ever, which speaks to our sustained success as well as our optimism and belief in Disney’s potential to keep growing and creating value over the long term. Our Studio delivered some of the biggest movies of 2014, and surpassed $4 billion in global box office for the second year in a row. Our Parks and Resorts continued to push the boundaries of creativity and innovation to take the guest experience to a whole new level of excellence, achieving record worldwide attendance and delivering double-digit earnings growth. ESPN further strengthened its claim to the number one sports brand with long-term rights deals for the best in sports and the launch of a new SEC network into 70 million homes.

  • Chapter One Disneyization
Bryman-Ch-01.qxd 4/15/04 3:39 PM Page 1 Chapter One Disneyization Mini Contents Disneyization not Disneyfication 5 Trivialization and sanitization 6 Reflections on Disneyization 10 Conclusion 12 In this book, I make the case that more and more sectors of society and the economy are being infiltrated by a process I call Disneyization. By Disneyization I mean simply: the process by which the principles of the Disney theme parks are coming to dominate more and more sectors of American society as well as the rest of the world. I see the principles that are described in this book as infiltrating many and a grow- ing number of areas of social, cultural, and economic life. Others have drawn attention to the way in which many areas of modern life are coming to take on the manifestations of a theme park, such as when a Times journalist referred to Canary Wharf in London as ‘theme park city’.1 In this book I go beyond such general allusions to the growing influence of the Disney theme parks on social life by delineating, in more precise terms, the specific theme park principles that I see seeping through our society. In other words, the project with which this book is concerned is a more analytic assessment of the manifestation of Disney theme parks’ principles than is typically undertaken. At the same time, I will emphasize that we cannot attribute the dispersion of these principles solely to the rise of the Disney theme parks, since they clearly predate the parks themselves. The Disney theme park principles may well have leaked into our social institutions and prac- tices without the aid of the parks themselves.

Yet the size of the park, the age restrictions of the attractions, the preferences amongst di↵erent age groups and the time a family could spend in the park, makes it difficult to decide which attractions to visit. By collecting data from the Disneyland Paris website and other reliable sources which include ratings of the attractions for each age group, we formulate an Orienteering Problem that aims to find the route achieving the maximum total rating. Our case study tries to answer two questions: (i) how should each family member individually navigate the park maximizing his/hers total rating, and (ii) how should a family as a single group navigate the park such that all family members achieve their goals. Our results show that if the family stay as a single group, the loss in total rating is negligible compared to each family member navigating the park individually. Keywords. Mixed-Integer Optimization, Orienteering Problem, Modeling, Disneyland Paris 1 Introduction Founded in 1992, Disneyland Paris is one of the most visited attractions in Europe, attracting more than 15 million visitors per year (1). • Fiscal Year 2011 Annual Financial Report and Shareholder Letter
Fiscal Year 2011 Annual Financial Report And Shareholder Letter January 2012 Dear Shareholders, Fiscal 2011 was a year of great accomplishment for The Walt Disney Company, marked by creativity and innovation across our businesses globally, record financial results and numerous important steps to position the Company for the future. While 2011 brought us so much to cheer about, it was also marked by profound loss, with the passing of Steve Jobs. Steve’s incredible stewardship of Pixar, and his decision to sell Pixar to Disney in 2006, brought Steve into the Disney family, as a board member, a shareholder, a mentor, and a friend, and we were so lucky for all that he represented and all that he contributed. Disney, ESPN, ABC, Pixar, and Marvel are an amazing collection of brands that grow stronger every day as new platforms and new markets provide enormous new opportunities for high quality content and experiences. To that end, we are fortunate to have a talented group of employees who are committed day in and day out to building our brands around the world. Since becoming President and CEO in 2005, I have focused on three strategic priorities: creating high-quality family content, making experiences more memorable and accessible through innovative technology, and growing internationally. In fiscal 2011, net income attributable to Disney was a record $4.8 billion, an increase of 21% over last year, and revenue was a record $40.9 billion, up 7% from last year. Diluted earnings per share increased by 24% to a record $2.52. I’m particularly gratified by our outstanding performance in fiscal 2011, given the challenging global economic environment.
