Stereotypes and Economic Conditions of Poor Whites in the U.S. "White trash" is, in many ways, the white Other. When we think about race in the U.S., oftentimes we find ourselves constrained by cat- egories we've inherited from a kind of essentialist multiculturalism, or what we call "vulgar multiculturalism."^ Vulgar multiculturalism holds that racial and ethic groups are "authentically" and essentially differ- ent from each other, and that racism is a one-way street: it proceeds out of whiteness to subjugate non-whiteness, so that all racists are white and all victims of racism are non-white. Critical multiculturalism, as it has been articulated by theorists such as those in the Chicago Cultural Studies Group, is one example of a multiculturalism which tries to com- plicate and trouble the dogmatic ways vulgar multiculturalism has un- derstood race, gender, and class identities. "White trash" identity is one we believe a critical multiculturalism should address in order to further its project of re-examining the relationships between identity and social power. Unlike the "whiteness" of vulgar multiculturalism, the whiteness of "white trash" signals something other than privilege and social power. -

Hill To attend to "constructinglanguages" and "constructingpublics" implicates two directions of thought. A constructionist perspective problematizes and de-naturalizesthe idea of "language,"and suggestshow the fragile textualityof our talk is the resultas much of ideologicalprocesses as of neurobiologicalconstraints. To considerthe constructionof "publics"draws linguistic anthropology in new directions.While the idea that the arenas in which opinions are formed and decisionsare made are the products of social work is not new (cf. Myers and Brenneis1984), "publics" suggests a particular kind of arena, Flabermas's([1962] 1991)"public sphere, ... a categoryof bourgeoissociety." The concept of "public sphere"exposes a new arena for our attention,distinct from the interactionalfield of the marketor the kin group,where peoplewho live in statesspeak "as citizens," with referenceto public affairs,yet not as agentsof the state. Habermasof course arguedthat the bourgeoispublic sphereflourished only ephemerallybefore it was capturedby the cultureindustry with its capacityto manufactureinauthentic "public opinion." Habermashas been much critized for his nostalgiccommitment to the freedomand rationalityof the bourgeoispublic sphere,as well as his neglectof the wayin whichit functionedas much to excludeas to include (cf. papersin Calhoun (ed.)1992; and Robbins(ed.) 1993).The conceptof "public"is, however,productive preciselybecause it sketchesin the broad outlinesof an important arena for the reproductionof exclusionsin contemporarysocieties. Chaque mot a son histoire. —Jules Gilliéron A Philological Caution The Emergence of Slurs We wear two hats when we talk about slurs, as engaged citizens and as scholars of language. The words had very little theoretical interest for philosophy or linguistic semantics before they took on a symbolic role in the culture wars that broke out in and around the academy in the 1980s.1 But once scholars’ attention was drawn to the topic, they began to discern connections to familiar problems in meta-ethics, semantics, and the philosophy of language. The apparent dual nature of the words—they seem both to describe and to evaluate or express— seemed to make them an excellent test bed for investigations of non-truth-conditional aspects of meaning, of certain types of moral language, of Fregean “coloring,” and of hybrid or “thick” terms, among other things. There are some writers who take slurs purely as a topical jumping-off point for addressing those issues and don’t make any explicit effort to bring their discussions back to the social questions that drew scholars’ attention to the words in the first place. But most seem to feel that their research ought to have some significance beyond the confines of the common room. That double perspective can leave us a little wall-eyed, as we try to track slurs as both a social and linguistic phenomenon. -

Committee on Graduate Work Advisor 11 ABSTRACT OF THESIS WHITE SOUTH AFRICANS IN COLORADO: UNDERSTANDINGS OF APARTHEID AND POST-APARTHEID SOCIETY This pilot study focuses on the experiences of two white ethnic groups within the South African immigrant population, Afrikaners and English-speakers, who came of age during two different phases of apartheid, between 1958-1978 and 1979-1993. Race, ethnicity, generational standing, class, and nationalism remain important fault lines, so my analysis is structured to differentiate between the entrenchment and reproduction of these identities during apartheid and the disruption of these in the post-apartheid era and in people's migration to the U.S. Using a phenomenological approach, I investigate three issues: experiences of being white, the culture of apartheid, and immigration. Among the themes that emerged from my interviews are the "schizophrenic" nature of life under apartheid; guilt and responsibility; questions of truth, propaganda, and brainwashing; "Afropessimism" and racism; what it meant to be white under apartheid versus the present 'box of being white'; the 'push factors' of affirmative action and crime; and perspectives of race and racism in the U.S. -

GOODWIN has been approved for the Department of History and the College of Arts and Sciences by Chester Pach Professor of History Robert Frank Dean, College of Arts and Sciences 3 Abstract GOODWIN, GERALD F., Ph.D., August 2014, History Race in the Crucible of War: African American Soldiers and Race Relations in the “Nam” Director of Dissertation: Chester Pach For African Americans soldiers serving in the armed forces during the Vietnam War the domestic scene loomed large. African Americans perceived racial issues—race relations, prejudice, and discrimination—in Vietnam through a lens heavily influenced by their earlier experiences in the United States. Issues related to race and race relations helped to define the African American experience in the United States, and these same issues defined the experiences of black soldiers in Vietnam. Race relations in combat were typified by cooperation, shared sacrifice, and a sense of brotherhood. These positive relations were largely a reflection of the fact that black and white soldiers in combat were heavily dependent on one another. Despite these positive interactions with whites, African Americans did not view the armed forces as an institution free of racial prejudice. -

Teaching American Literature: A Journal of Theory and Practice Summer 2007 (1:3) Bein' Broke: The White Trash Writes Back William Matthew McCarter, Mid Michigan Community College Introduction: First, let me say that I am a college professor who was born into the working class. My father drives a forklift for the United Auto Workers and my mother is a homemaker. They were divorced when I was two and I was raised by my grandparents. My grandfather was a Teamster and my grandmother worked in a shoe factory (until it closed because of the coming globalization of industrial work). I was a twenty-eight year old freshman in college. Initially, I went there, not because I saw some intrinsic value in education, but more because I saw education as a refuge from the economic storm that I faced as an unskilled, uneducated worker in a post-industrial economy. While I was attending the local community college in Dallas, Texas, I discovered that there were student organizations and support groups for everyone but me. I wasn't a minority; I wasn't a woman, and, being a Catholic from a small town eighty miles south of St. Louis, Missouri, I didn't really fit in with the Christian Student's Union either. I experienced first hand what some of my white working class students at the community colleges in Texas where I have taught must experience when they enter the hallowed walls of the college – alienation and a fear – the kind of alienation and fear that leads the adult student to believe that "I must have really messed up my life somewhere along the line to end up here starting over." I began my college career with a similar sense of failure – I had somehow failed just for being there in the first place. -
