airships for cargo transport o Conducting vertical or near-vertical airlift of heavy, outsized freight with little or no ground infrastructure is an attractive cargo transport option • USTRANSCOM wanted to understand the principal issues that are holding back commercial development of airship transports • NASA Ames Research Center was commissioned by USTRANSCOM to study the airship industry’s ability to design, develop, and operate cargo airships • Principal study objectives were to identify: o Current and near term state of the cargo airship industry o Roadblocks hindering cargo airship development o Steps needed to remove impediments to cargo airship deployment 4 Demand Side: Airships Missions and Users • Interest in cargo airships greatest since the age of the great rigid airships o Commercial airship transport ranges from tens of miles to a few hundred miles (highest demand), with a small number of long distance missions o Threshold demand for airship transport of 10 to 15 tons, with a middle range demand around 45 to 50 tons, rising to interest in 150 tons plus • Principal commercial application supporting "resource extraction“ o Airship provides access to remote or difficult to access areas where conventional transport is prohibitively expensive or environmentally restricted • Particular interest in moving outsized or heavy “project freight” Canadian northern home construction Heavy vertical lift Equipment transport Canadian ice road replacement 5 Demand Side: Airships Missions and Users (cont.) • DoD demand is for insertion of materials into critical points not easily reached o Reduce number of moves required in the Area of Operations o Provide US forces with advantage of adaptive power projection o Move new things in new ways (support to Seabasing concepts, etc…) 6 Supply Side: Airship Companies • Industry survey assessed capabilities of 51 organizations • Seven companies represent majority of existing airship operators o Five (all manufactures) have aerostat operational capabilities o Thirty six companies have potential (or aspiration) to develop and manufacture their LTA designs o Three firms were focused on LTA design only with no manufacturing interest • Eighteen firms active designing, building, or operating airships or aerostats o These were funded with full-time staff and currently offering airships, aerostats, or operating LTA systems (or able to do so) • Thirteen firms had some level of funding, some staff (mostly part-time) o But did not yet have an ongoing business of supplying or operating LTA vehicles • Fourteen firms had some level of LTA design or development commitment o But not actively moving forward due to insufficient or pending funds 7 Recent Airship Programs • Hybrid Air Vehicles (HAV) converted LEMV into proof-of-concept commercial cargo airship demonstrator (soon to make first flight) • Lockheed Martin ready to construct several LMH-1 commercial cargo hybrid airships pending propulsion/airfoil • TP Aerospace is finalizing design of ATLAS 50 cargo airship o Uses electric propulsion and both roll-on-roll-off and hovering payload deliveries TP Aerospace ATLAS 50 unloading at designing their fully solar powered electric DS 1500 proof-of-concept airship using aluminum tubing and sail fabric • Another French company, A-NSE is investigating their unique variable shape and variable volume non-rigid airship concept o May enable optimization of airship hulls for high speed, or for hovering flight by changing hull shape as needed Dirisolar concept installation of solar cells CFD simulation of A-NSE side lobe design concept 11 Recent Airship Programs (cont.) • An Argentinian firm Aerovehicles is progressing through initial design of their Aerocat rigid hybrid cargo airship concepts • Zeppelin NT maintains their airship design, manufacturing, and operational experience providing 3 new Zeppelin N 07 airships to Goodyear Goodyear Zeppelin N 07 in flight Aerovehicles Aerocat R-40 12 Zeppelin N 07 assembly at Goodyear hangar Recent Airship Programs (cont.) • Two Russian companies RosAeroSystems and Airship GP proposing heavy lift commercial cargo airship designs, with each incorporating several novel technologies not employed in previous airship designs RosAeroSystems ATLANT with internal hydrogen ballonets Airship GP Super-hybrid ATLANT turboprop and turbojet lifting engines Layout of Super-hybrid Super-hybrid helium and 13 internal propulsion units air/steam chambers Airship Design Trends and Technologies • Near-buoyant airship with single ellipsoidal shape and hybrid designs combining gas lift with the dynamic lift of an airplane or helicopter • Other airship shapes are being explored: o Winged and rotary hybrid o Lenticular, deltoid, and spherical hulls • Airship hulls compromise between exclusive performance capabilities o Streamlined hull for high speed long distance operations o Non-directional hull for hovering precision and wind gust mitigation . With hovering cargo delivery airship doesn’t land to pick up or deliver cargo 14 Airship Design Trends and Technologies (cont.) • Airships combine modern rigid and fabric structures o Strength-to-weight ratios of airship fabrics increasing. Most popular include Vectran and Technora • Chromoly-4130 tubing and aluminum still in use but Kevlar, graphite laminates, and Nomex honeycomb being adopted o Aerospace composite tubing used for gondolas, (majority of Zeppelin N 07 hull is made of graphite tubes) TP Aerospace “Airbeam” suspending a car o TP Aerospace “rigid” hull structures made of inflatable high pressure fabric tubes • Some rigid hulls combine internal rigid parts (longerons and stringers) with lightweight rigid shell o One rigid shell airship uses aerospace aluminum sheet while others use rigidized sheets of composite fabric ATLANT structure and skin 15 Airship Design Trends and Technologies (cont.) • Aerospace and non-aerospace engines used, none are optimized for airships o Aero-diesels are in use (350 hp) but larger airships need high power versions o Turboprops are being chosen despite higher fuel consumption • New propulsion alternatives include: o Electric motors powered by solar cells, and hybrid-electric systems combining diesel engine and electric generator o An airship was test flown using diesel engine driving a hydraulic pump to power hydraulic propulsion units mounted on the airship hull LEMV 350 hp aero-diesel Blue Devil 2 TPE331-12 turboprop Polar 400 hydraulic powered airship 16 Airship Design Trends and Technologies (cont.) • Designers developing methods to control airship buoyancy o Compress the lifting gas and store it onboard o Heat the lifting gas to increase its volume and subsequent lift o Use superheated steam as a cheep, safe lifting gas that can be vented • Russian patent issued for a chemical additive rendering hydrogen non- flammable (Russia Patent No. 2441685, 2 October 2012) o Allows safe use of cheep hydrogen as lifting gas that can be vented Skylite GeoShip buoyancy compensation system 17 Steam balloon Airship Design Trends and Technologies (cont.) • Designers of hybrid lifting body airships are incorporating air cushion landing systems (ACLS) • These hovercraft systems allow the airship to land and taxi on undeveloped surfaces, and bodies of water o ACLS promises independence from prepared operating ground sites Lockheed Martin LMH-1 ACLS skirts HAV AIRLANDER ACLS skirts deployed for landing 18 Airship Design Trends and Technologies (cont.) • Airship cargo handling systems o Internal carriage with conventional roll-on- roll-off ramps into a payload bay o Carriage of large, outsized

For this purpose, an Instructor and a number of trainees are carried to the operational height in a balloon car, the winch is stopped, and when certain conditions are satisfied, the trainees are dispatched and make their parachute descent from the balloon car. GA-22 Airship Fully Autonomous AIRSHIPS An airship or dirigible is a type of aerostat or “lighter-than-air aircraft” that can be steered and propelled through the air using rudders and propellers or other thrust mechanisms. Unlike aerodynamic aircraft such as fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters, which produce lift by moving a wing through the air, aerostatic aircraft, and unlike hot air balloons, stay aloft by filling a large cavity with a AEROSTATS lifting gas. The main types of airship are non rigid (blimps), semi-rigid and rigid. It turns out the tower was not grounded. The lightning came down the heliax coaxial cables, about 2 inches in diameter (no cm back then), into the building. One of the (vacuum tube, remember those?) VHF radios looked like the speaker grille was hit by a fist from behind. The CD director's telephone was melted on the desk. All the electrical outlets were burned and the air-raid siren relay was welded ‘on’. The siren activated and would not turn off. The only person in the office was a secretary who knew nothing about electricity. I think she must have aged 10 years in 2 seconds that day. I was in high school at the time and came to realize at a tender age that there is no such thing as a ‘lightning protector’.     CARGO AIRSHIPS: AN INTERNATIONAL STATUS REPORT Dr. Barry E. Prentice, Professor University of Manitoba and Robert Knotts BA MBA M Phil (Engineering), Chairman Airship Association Giant airships were built and operated primarily by the German Zeppelin company, from 1909 to 1940. The Imperial Airship Scheme of the British Government, the military airships of the U.S. Army and the Italian airships of Forlanini and Nobile also furthered airship technology. A negative perception of airship exists because of accidents that cloud the important achievements of this period. The giant Zeppelins could cruise at 80 miles per hour and carry useful loads of 70 tons on scheduled flights across the oceans. Of particular note is the Graf Zeppelin that made over 150 Atlantic crossings and circumnavigated the globe. These records were established without sophisticated communication equipment or navigation facilities. The ability to adapt this technology for cargo transport is recognized and has created interest internationally. Small inflatables (blimps) and semi-rigid airships are available for research, advertising or surveillance purposes. But, no heavy-lift airships exist currently. Over the past 15 years, new strategies have been developed to overcome the drawbacks of airship for cargo applications. The competition for the dominant cargo airship design is worldwide. This paper reviews the status of cargo airship developments on three Type: Regular 1 Prentice & Knotts 1 Prentice/Knotts continents. The technological approaches are compared and examined for the emergence of a dominant design. Search for the Dominant Design The last large airship capable of commercial cargo haulage was built before the invention of the strain gauge in 1938.

Historical background In the mid-1920's Norway's Fridtjof Nansen organized an international association called Aeroarctic. As its name implies, its purpose was the scientific exploration of the north polar regions by aircraft, particularly by airship. When Nansen died in 1930 Dr. Hugo Eckener of Luftschiffbau-Zeppelin Company suc- ceeded him to the Aeroarctic presidency. He placed his airship, the Graf Zeppelin, at the disposal of the organization and the following year carried out a three-day flight over and along the shores of the Arctic Ocean. The roster of scientists who made this 1931 flight, which originated in Leningrad, in- cluded meteorologists and geographers from the United States, the Soviet Union, Sweden, and, of course, Germany. One of them was Professor Moltschanoff who would launch three of his early radiosondes from the dirigible before the expedition was over. During a trip which was completed without incident and which included a water land- ing off Franz Josef Land to rendezvous with the Soviet icebreaker Malygin, considerable new information on Arctic weather and geography was obtained. Means for Arctic More than thirty years have since elapsed. Overflight of Arctic waters is no longer his- weather observations toric or even newsworthy. Yet weather in the Polar Basin remains fragmentarily ob- served, known, and understood. To remedy this situation, the following are being actively proposed for widespread Arctic use: Automatic observing and reporting stations, similar to the isotopic-powered U. S. Weather Bureau station located in the Canadian Arctic.

In the United States over 3000 thermally lifted aerostats, commonly referred to as hot air balloons, were built and flown by an estimated 12,000 licensed balloon pilots in the last decade. The evolution of controlling fire in hot air balloons during the first century of ballooning is the subject of this article. The purpose of this assessment is to separate the development of thermally lifted aerostats from the general history of aerostatics which includes all gas balloons such as hydrogen and helium lifted balloons as well as thermally lifted balloons.

Ardema Ames Research Center Several buoyant-vehicle (airship) concepts proposed for short hauls of heavy payloads are described. Numer- ous studies have identified operating cost and payload capacity advantages relative to existing or proposed heavy-lift helicopters for such vehicles. Applications mvolving payloads of from 15 tons up to 800 tons have been identified. The buoyant quad-rotor concept is discussed in detail, including the history of its development, current estimates of performance and economics, currently perceived technology requirements, and recent research and technology development. It is concluded that the buoyant quad-rotor, and possibly other buoyant vehicle concepts, has the potential of satisfying the market for very heavy vertical lift but that additional research and technology development are necessary. Because of uncertainties in analytical prediction methods and small-scale experimental measurements, there is a strong need for large or full-scale experiments in ground test facilities and, ultimately, with a flight research vehicle.
