Research Shows Catastrophic Invertebrate Extinction in Hawai'i and Globally 10 August 2015
Research shows catastrophic invertebrate extinction in Hawai'i and globally 10 August 2015 that the rate of extinction may have been as high as 14 percent of the fauna per decade. In a companion study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, members of the team, in collaboration with mathematics and bioinformatics specialists at the Pierre and Marie Curie University in Paris, addressed invertebrate extinction globally. Since the 1980s, many biologists have concluded that the earth is in the midst of a massive biodiversity extinction crisis caused by human activities. Yet only around 800 of the planet's 1.9 million known species are officially recorded as extinct by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) "Red List". MORDAN The Natural Histo~ Museum, CromwellRoad, London SW7 5BD Received December 1993, revisedand acceptedfor publication J@ 1994 A comprehensive study of the anatomy, ecology and distribution of the orthurethran genus Draparnaudia confirms its family-group status, and suggests a probable sister-group relationship with another Pacific family, the Partulidae; its previous position as a subfamily of the Enidae is refuted. Draparnaudia is endemic to New Caledonia, but records from the New Hebrides are thought to result from introductions. A total of six species are recognized in the taxonomic revision, including two new species. Spermatophores are recorded for the first time. ZooKeys 950: 1–31. https://doi.org/10.3897/zookeys.950.50669 Abstract Recent surveys of Oahu’s Waianae Mountains uncovered a small, previously undescribed species of Au- riculella that is conchologically similar to the three members of the A. perpusilla group all of which are endemic to the Koolau Mountain Range. However, sequence data demonstrate that the perpusilla group is not monophyletic. Moreover, the new species is not closely related to A. perpusilla or A. perversa, the only extant members of the group, but instead is sister to A.
