A Letter to Pope Francis Concerning His Past, the Abysmal State of Papism, and a Plea to Return to Holy Orthodoxy The lengthy letter that follows was written by His Eminence, the Metropolitan of Piraeus, Seraphim, and His Eminence, the Metropolitan of Dryinoupolis, Andrew, both of the Church of Greece. It was sent to Pope Francis on April 10, 2014. The Orthodox Christian Information Center (OrthodoxInfo.com) assisted in editing the English translation. It was posted on OrthodoxInfo.com on Great and Holy Monday, April 14, 2014. The above title was added for the English version and did not appear in the Greek text. Metropolitan Seraphim is well known and loved in Greece for his defense of Orthodoxy, his strong stance against ecumenism, and for the philanthropic work carried out in his Metropolis (http://www.imp.gr/). His Metropolis is also well known for Greece’s first and best ecclesiastical radio station: http://www.pe912fm.com/. This radio station is one of the most important tools for Orthodox outreach in Greece. Metropolitan Seraphim was born in 1956 in Athens. He studied law and theology, receiving his master’s degree and his license to practice law. In 1980 he was tonsured a monk and ordained to the holy diaconate and the priesthood by His Beatitude Seraphim of blessed memory, Archbishop of Athens and All Greece. He served as the rector of various churches and as the head ecclesiastical judge for the Archdiocese of Athens (1983) and as the Secretary of the Synodal Court of the Church of Greece (1985-2000). In December of 2000 the Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarch elected him as an auxiliary bishop of the Holy Archdiocese of Australia in which he served until 2002. -

Professor Carla Phillips impressed upon me the significance of daily life among the people of Europe during the early modern period (1450-1800). As Professor Phillips’ teaching assistant for a number of years, I witnessed lectures that animated the historical narrative and inspired students to question their own unique sense of historical continuity and discontinuities. İlahiyat Fakültesi Dergisi, Cilt 5, Sayı 1, Ocak-Haziran 2005 Osmanlı Döneminde Tarsus (1516-1923) Abdullah POŞ* Özet: Tarsus ve çevresinde yapılan arkeolojik kazılarda M.Ö. 5000 yıllarına kadar uza- nan yerleşim kalıntılarına rastlanmaktadır. Tarihi bu kadar eskilere dayanan şehrin ilk defa kim tarafından ve ne zaman kurulduğu tam olarak tespit edilemese de, Tarsus’un ilk çağlardan beri mamur bir şehir olduğu anlaşılmaktadır. Tarsus, stratejik konumun- dan dolayı uzun bir süre Kilikya’nın hem yönetim, hem de ticaret merkezi olmuştur. Bu sebeple Kilikya’ya hakim olmak isteyen devletler, Tarsus’u ele geçirmek zorunda kal- mışlardır. Tarsus, Asurlulardan itibaren Mısırlılar, Hititler, Fenikeliler, Kilikyalılar, Pers İmparatorluğu, Makedonya Krallığı, Selefkoslar ve Romalıların egemenliği altın- da kaldı. Daha sonra Müslümanlarla Bizans, Ermeni ve Haçlılar arasında bir çok kez el değiştiren şehri, Yavuz Sultan Selim 1516’da Mısır seferi sırasında fethetti. Tarsus ve çevresi 1832-1840 yılları arasında Mısırlı İbrahim Paşa’nın elinde kaldı. 1840’tan 17 Aralık 1918’e kadar yine Osmanlıların hakimiyetinde olan şehir, bu tarihten itibaren 27 Aralık 1921’e kadar Fransızların işgali altında kaldı. Aynı tarihte yapılan Ankara Anlaşması ile işgal sona erdi. Osmanlılar, Tarsus’u fethettiklerinde, sancağın sınırları içerisinde beş kale bulunuyordu. Bunlar Tarsus, Külek, Namrun, Babarun ve Sınab ka- leleridir. Tarsus’un idarî yapısı, XVI. yüzyılın sonlarına doğru belirginleşmiştir. Uzun süre altı nâhiyeli bir sancak olan şehrin idarî taksimatında 1850’li yıllarda büyük deği- şiklikler olmuştur. Bu dönemde bir yandan yeni nâhiyeler kurulurken, bir yandan da Mersin sürekli gelişmiş ve 1864’de Tarsus’tan ayrılarak kaza statüsüne yükseltilmiştir. Daha önce Tarsus’a bağlı olan Gökçeli ve Elvanlı nâhiyeleri bu tarihte Mersin Ka- zası’na dahil edildi. -

Eddy: Climate in Greco-Roman History Climate in oreco-Roman History samuel K. Eddy have recently completed some research which originally I aimed only at answering a small question. But success in this soon led to conclusions about the causes of the collapse of classical civilization itself. For a long time I had been interested in a series of Greek inscriptions which records the amounts of money paid to Athens each year during the third quarter of the fifth century B.C. by over one hundred subject allies. Two princi ples clearly governed the exact sums demanded: First, each state paid a round amount of money, such as one talent or some simple fraction of a talent like one-half, which was around three thousand drachms. Second, the obligation did not change, as a rule, during the entire quarter century. If it did, the change took place only at the start of one of the quadrennial periods of assessment and then remained constant for the four years. -

New Jerusalem, also referred to as: Tabernacle of God, Holy City, City of God, Celestial City, Heavenly Jerusalem, Jerusalem above, Zion, Shining City on a Hill New Jerusalem John of Patmos watches the descent of New Jerusalem from God in a 14th century tapestry. International Journal of the Classical Tradition https://doi.org/10.1007/s12138-019-00551-1 ARTICLE A Public Debate on Cyril of Alexandria’s Views on the Procession of the Holy Spirit in Seventeenth‑Century Constantinople: the Jesuit Reaction to Nicodemos Metaxas’s Greek Editions Nil Palabıyık1 © The Author(s) 2020 On a September afternoon in 1627, crowds gathered at the library of the Jesuit resi- dence in Constantinople to witness a lively public discussion between two repre- sentatives of the Roman Catholic Church concerning Cyril of Alexandria’s views on the procession of the Holy Spirit.1 It is interesting to see that a ffth-century church father’s writings in the context of a dispute dating back to the sixth century were still considered politically relevant, socially infuential and theologically compelling in seventeenth-century Constantinople. The primary aim of this rather ostentatious gathering was to adopt and promote a diferent (according to Eastern Christians an ‘erroneous’) viewpoint on Cyril of Alexandria’s writings on the procession of the Holy Spirit, and thereby to present a counter-argument to that of the Eastern Church. The Jesuit dispute ultimately targeted the theological stance and the reputation of Cyril Lucaris (1572–1638), the ecumenical patriarch of Constantinople and the of- cial head of the populous Greek Orthodox millet of the Ottoman Empire. 1 Cyril of Alexandria’s opinion on this question is still controversial, but lies beyond the scope of this article.
