UNIVERSUM Sky River of the Himalayas

UNIVERSUM Part I: From the Source to the Gorge UNIVERSUM Part II: From the Forest to the Plains Part III: From the Plains to the Ocean

It begins as the world’s highest major river. It thun- ders through the planet’s biggest gorge and flows past Asia’s hotspots of biodiversity, teeming with wildlife. United with the Ganges, it forms the world’s greatest river delta. As it passes through each of the Earth’s climate zones the Sky River becomes a motor for the monsoon that determines a third of the world’s weather, dominating the lives of more than a billion people.

This groundbreaking documentary explores the en- tire length of the river whose Hindu name – Brah- maputra – means “Son of Creation”.

Part I takes us from the glaciers, between 8,000-metre peaks, across Tibet’s high, dry and harsh semi-desert, where Chiru antelope race across the plateau at 100kph in the thin air, warmed by the finest of coats that make theirs the world’s most valuable fleece. Then we descend 3,000 me- ters through the world’s deepest, longest (240km) and still barely explored Tsangpo Gorge.

Part II continues through the Gorge with its red pandas and isolated human settlements, emerging into India’s temperate forests where Gee’s golden langurs and macaques roam, and clouded leop- ards hunt. The river skirts round the Himalayas into Assam’s luxuriant green monsoon- and tea country, with its iconic wildlife: one-horned rhinos, elephants, black-tailed pythons – and the last wild pygmy hogs. UNIVERSUM Part I: Hunters UNIVERSUM Part II: Whales and Volcanoes Part III: Corals and Quetzals

Part I Spectacular action in paradise. From the opening sequence of a sea turtle snared by a tiger shark it’s clear that no animal, Hunter or Hunted – above or below the water – can make it through life without a strategy for survival.

Part II When volcanoes burst from the ocean, they attract unique life forms to their steep jungle val- leys and black sandy beaches – and create deep sea chasms that pods of sperm whales enjoy so much, they never leave.

Part III Caribbean coral coasts and islands, formed out of living and once-living creatures, are now a labyrinth of life. Every year in a stunning synchro- nized display of coral spawning, the “flower ani- mals” re-colonise the reefs. Inland, Caribbean cloud forests with their legendary Quetzals are just as magical, but the suffocating sediment run-off from logging is the corals’ biggest challenge.

66 67 HABSBURG EMPIRE

The Fall of the Habsburgs HISTORY HISTORY The Habsburg Dynasty has ruled large parts of Eu- rope and the world for 650 years. During World War I, however, the mighty Austro-Hungarian Empire sowed the seeds of its own demise. When Charles I inherited Franz Joseph’s throne in November 1916, he embarked on a single-handed mission to make peace. He offered France control of Alsace-Lorraine – a betrayal of his greatest ally and brother-in-arms, Germany. The so-called “Sixtus Affair” destroyed the last chance for peace in Europe – and sealed the fate of the Habsburg dynasty and the Austro-Hun- garian Empire itself. Charles I would go down in his- tory as the last emperor of Europe.
